As October draws to a close, we at Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes take a moment to reflect on two important recognitions that shape our work. Two associations that we belong to include the Ontario Community Support Association and the Alliance for Healthier Communities. Through the Community Support Month and Community Health and Wellbeing Month, which are hosted by these two associations respectively, we paused to draw awareness to some of the incredible work facilitated in the community health space. These celebrations remind us of the powerful role that health, support, and community connections play in our lives and inspire our efforts to bring meaningful care to each individual in Kawartha Lakes. When community health providers have the resources to keep people well and living in their communities, we can reduce the pressure on our hospitals and long-term care systems while helping deliver better health outcomes and healthier populations.

In October, we honored the diversity of needs within our community and celebrated the many ways we are working together to meet them. Community Support Month reinforced the importance of services that help people live independently, safely, and with dignity. From adult day programs, to transportation, to meals on wheels and more, we are committed to providing comprehensive care that enables all members of our community to feel safe and supported at every stage of life.

At the same time, Community Health and Wellbeing Month highlighted our dedication to a broader view of health—one that sees physical, mental, and social wellness as essential to a vibrant community. This month also allows us to draw attention to the importance of health equity and its role in creating the best health system possible. Community Health Centres like ours look at care through a health equity lens. It is why we have a dental clinic that aims to make oral health care more accessible. It is why we have programs like the Good Food Box that aim to bring the healthy food choices within reach. This month reaffirms our goal to improve health outcomes through accessible health care and support for everyone, regardless of circumstances.

Our rurality is one of the things that makes the CKL such an amazing place to live. That said, it does bring with it challenges in service delivery and accessibility. Our goal is to work towards greater accessibility, regardless of where someone calls home. Community Care’s offering of care and support is available across the City of Kawartha Lakes community. In some cases, that service is provided at someone’s home, as is the case with Meals on Wheels, Hospice Services, GAIN, Transportation and more. In other programs people travel to a Community Care facility or service location, as is the case with our Dental Clinic, Primary Care, Adult Day Program, and more. Of our 6,100+ clients, 58% reside in Lindsay, and the other 42% are in communities across the CKL like Bobcaygeon (10%), Fenelon Falls (7%), Omemee (3%), Woodville (3%) and more.

This October, as we celebrated these two awareness months, we are reminded of the strength that comes from a community working together. Thank you to each client, volunteer, staff member, partner, and supporter who share our goals and welcome dialogue to continuously aim to improve our services and the broader community health sector.

-Ryan Alexander, CEO Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes

A Farewell for a Dedicated Hospice Volunteer

Long-time Hospice Services volunteer Dorothy Crombie retired and handed in her purple vest at the end of September. Dorothy has been an integral part of the Hospice Team since 2013. Over those many years, she supported palliative clients and their families in their homes, worked at the Hospice Services reception desk welcoming visitors and made every client and individual feel safe and welcome. In all her roles, Dorothy’s most heartfelt calling was to the Palliative Unit at Ross Memorial Hospital. Dorothy has a way of making everyone she meets feel valued and important. She listens with keen attention and true compassion. Dorothy always exceeded the standard of care and raised the bar and supported everyone around her to always aim for the best care possible.

In the more than 4381 hours (not a typo!!) that Dorothy gave to Hospice Services, she touched countless lives in the most beautiful way. People often recognize Dorothy’s voice or laugh and approach her to say thank you for the care she offered to them and to the person they loved. Although she no longer is an official hospice volunteer, we have no doubt that she will continue to “hospice” anyone lucky enough to share a path in life with her even for a short while.

Dorothy served with her whole heart and we are all better for having had the gift of working along side her. Please join us in thanking Dorothy for the wonderful difference she made to so many in our community!

STARS Children's Grief Program

Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes Hospice Services offers a virtual children’s grief support program called STARS (Standing Together And Receiving Support) for children aged 6-12. This 8-week virtual group incorporates constellation-inspired interactive art, play, and reflective activities to guide children through their unique grief journeys.

STARS provides a safe, supportive space for children to share memories of their loved ones, express their grief, and process emotions like sadness, anger, and joy. Participants gain essential coping skills, learn how to seek support, and develop strategies to navigate the overwhelming feelings that accompany grief. The program also helps children connect with peers who are on similar grief journeys, reducing feelings of isolation. Each child will receive a constellation kit delivered to their home before the program begins, offering hands-on tools for reflection and creative expression.

Hospice Services recognizes the impact grief has on the whole family. To support parents and guardians, STARS offers weekly letters with activity guides and suggestions to encourage family conversations.

For more information about STARS, please contact Hospice Services at 705-324-4373 ext. 550.
