International Overdose Awareness Day

On August 30th, International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD) was honored by several agencies at Victoria Park in Lindsay. Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes Hospice Services was proud to stand alongside our community in support of those affected by overdose deaths. Together with other local organizations, our Hospice Services volunteers provided information and compassionate support to event participants. The day concluded with a meaningful butterfly release in the garden, hosted by the John Howard Society. Events like IOAD play a vital role in raising awareness about overdose poisoning and offering solace to those grieving the loss of a loved one.

World Suicide Prevention Day

World Suicide Prevention Day is marked each year on September 10th. As has been the custom at Hospice, a short memorial service remembering our loved ones lost through suicide was held at the Old Mill Park in Lindsay. Supportive Care Counsellor Brian Farmer led the short service and sang James Taylor’s ‘Fire and Rain’, an appropriate selection given that Taylor wrote the song to commemorate a friend who had died by suicide. Brian shared with the group that it was a natural way for the song writer to process his grief. As with last year, at the conclusion of the service, participants were invited to walk to the deck at the park and throw carnations into the river in memory of their loved one.

Hospice Services offers a range of support groups for individuals coping with grief, whether they’ve recently experienced a loss or are further along in their healing journey. These groups provide a space for discussion and personal reflection, helping participants explore ways to navigate life after loss. Visit our website to learn more about the grief support programs we offer or reach out to us at 705-324-7323 ext 550 or hospiceinfo@ccckl.ca for more information.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

September 30 is recognized as National Day of Truth and Reconciliation or Orange Shirt Day, which is an Indigenous-led grassroots commemorative day inspired by the story of Indian Residential School Survivor Phyllis Webstad. When Phyllis was 6 years old she wore her new orange shirt for her first day at residential school. Her shirt was immediately taken from her by school staff.

To mark National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, CCCKL is encouraging all employees to wear an orange shirt and to take a moment of reflection throughout the day. Visit our website to learn more about National Day of Truth and Reconciliation and CCCKL’s planned recognition activities for the day.
