Summer Is No Picnic For Homeless Families
July/August 2020
We remember Nancy
As many of you have heard, our founder, friend, and champion of the homeless, Nancy Woods, passed away on June 10, 2020. When one of her dear friends reached out and told me, I couldn't help thinking that the world had lost someone very special. For her entire adult life, Nancy supported causes, and more importantly, people, who were marginalized by our society.

Financial Fitness workshops resume

Like everyone, the families in our sheltering programs have pretty much settled into a routine and so it is time to get back to business at Family Promise.  On Thursday, June 25, our financial literacy workshop series began anew, this time via Zoom.

Family Promise of Bergen County volunteers distribute meals provided by World Central Kitchen
World Central Kitchen and Family Promise - No small potatoes!

When World Central Kitchen and Family Promise of Bergen County began working together to distribute prepared meals to people affected by the pandemic, it was on a two-week trial basis. WCK has extended its agreement multiple times after witnessing the community's need for fresh, nutritious food and Family Promise's capacity to deliver it to them. So far, Family Promise volunteers have distributed almost 19,000 meals and 3.6 tons of produce.

We're Back! (office reopening)

On June 15, our Ridgewood office reopened on a limited basis, and it's great to be back! Staff members are now rotating days working from the office with only half of the staff in at a time in order to continue practicing social distancing.

Volunteer at Family Promise of Bergen County walk-in dinner program
For the past 29 years, Family Promise of Bergen County has provided free dinners to shelter residents and anyone in need of a meal at the Housing, Health and Human Services Center in Hackensack as part of our nightly Walk-In Dinner Program. But when COVID-19 struck the area this past March and shelter residents were slowly evacuated and placed in local motels, the future of the program came into question...

Celebrating success during COVID-19

Two Family Promise staff members recently celebrated their daughters' graduations. Marie Shanley's daughter, Erin, above left, graduated from Tulane University and Jane He's daughter, Jade, graduated from Wayne Hills high school.
