Despite being largely colonized by Great Britain, by 1774 only 60% of Americans had English origins. The rest were Dutch, French, German, Scottish, Scots-Irish, and Swedish. Along with this came a babble of languages: German prevailed in Pennsylvania, Dutch along New York’s Hudson Valley, and French in Vermont and parts of New Hampshire and what would later become Maine.
