Rapid City, South Dakota - my hometown - is known as the City of Presidents, by virtue of its ambitious art project launched in 2000. Downtown street corners host life sized bronze statues of each of the past 44 Presidents of the United States. The latest entry, dedicated on July 13, is Barack Obama with his daughter, Sasha, waving on election night, 2008. (That's my son kneeling in front.) The project not only employs local artists, but boosts downtown visitation, and ties in with the presidential tribute on Mount Rushmore, just 27 miles away.
