Brookfield Renewable
Brookfield Renewable Reminds the Public to Exercise Caution during Winter Recreation Season

As an owner and operator of hydro facilities throughout Maine and portions of New Hampshire, Brookfield Renewable wants to remind the public to exercise extreme caution when recreating near hydropower dams and on ice-covered surfaces.

While in the midst of a milder than usual winter season in New England, the freeze and thaw weather events create frequently changing and unpredictable ice conditions. The unseasonably warm temperatures can cause frozen waters to melt and may pose safety risks for anyone recreating at rivers, reservoirs, lakes and streams.

In areas proximate to hydropower facilities, water doesn’t necessarily always freeze the way you expect. The water on the surface freezes to ice; however, underneath it, the water is always moving, and ice thickness can vary significantly from one area to another. Use extreme caution when snowmobiling, ice fishing or walking on ice at rivers, lakes and streams. Ice conditions can rapidly change, and thin ice can be fatal.

Brookfield Renewable is strongly committed to public safety and to providing a safe recreational experience. As a generator of clean, renewable, hydropower, the company operates hydro facilities located on rivers throughout Maine and New Hampshire, including the Penobscot, Union, Kennebec, Androscoggin, Saco and the Presumpscot.

Family Violence Project
Family Violence Project will be hosting a reading and discussion group for our staff, volunteers, and community partners again this year and we would love for you to join us! This year it will take place in Skowhegan at the Centenary United Methodist Church. This group is in collaboration with the Maine Humanities Council. The MHC provides all of the materials (books/readings/etc) and a facilitator for the group. We still have space in our reading group! Please let them know if you are interested and please share it with others whom you think could benefit from this engaging group!
Join readers from all over Maine engaging with these readings and talking about what it means to be a Mainer (native or immigrant) in the year of the state's bicentennial. Because domestic violence is ever present in the lives of Mainers, these readings offer the opportunity to read and talk with others, in particular about the effect of domestic violence on individual lives throughout Maine's history and within different communities. The group will also provide a place to discuss what it means to do the work of supporting survivors every day.
We will be meeting 5 times this year. If some of the dates don’t fit into your calendar, that is ok. It is not mandatory to come to all of them! We understand people are very busy and any time to come together and talk is valuable. We are planning on meeting on Wednesday afternoons, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Refreshments will be provided. The dates we have chosen are:

March 4th, April 1st, April 29th, May 27th, June 24th.

Past participants have gotten a lot out of this group and often continue to come back for more connections and to dive deeper into the complexities that exist. We hope you can join us too! To RSVP, email or call them and I will arrange with you a drop off or mailing of the materials. I am also available if you have any questions! Please also share this email and poster with any service providers or community partners you think could benefit from the group!

Hammond Lumber Company
Hammond Lumber Co.  has been named the 2020 ProSales Dealer of the Year. The company won the award based on its success in balancing customer service excellence and employee satisfaction, and the successful acquisition and integration of Ellsworth Building Supply (EBS) into the Hammond family, according to a news release from the Belgrade company.

“Our 800 employees deserve the full credit for this prestigious industry award. The acquisition was an ambitious undertaking and our employees’ hard work, dedication and perseverance created a successful outcome. I’m very honored that our company has been named ProSales Dealer of the Year,” said Mike Hammond, president and CEO of Hammond Lumber Co. “It is very humbling to me where we’re at today compared to what my grandparents, Skip and Verna Hammond, started from scratch back in 1953.”

ProSales praised Hammond for its successful unification of two corporate cultures and ERP business software system conversion.

EBS was a 10-location, coastal Maine-based building materials retailer with 300 employees based out of Ellsworth. In March 2019, Hammond converted the EBS locations from their former ERP business software to Hammond’s Epicor BisTrack system.

The company is the largest LBM retailer in Maine and the 25th largest ProSales dealer in the country.

In 2018, the Sappi Somerset Mill completed a rebuild of its Paper Machine 1, which has allowed the mill to shift from making only lighter, graphic-like papers to heavier paper used to make boxes.

“The biggest objective was to put in the kind of equipment that would allow machines to produce heavier weights and bigger technology,” Lynne Palmer, packaging product stewardship manager, said of the rebuild. Read more
