As a side note - The South Bristol draw bridge, referred to as "The Gut Bridge" is the only single span draw bridge in the state. It replaces a 78' turn bridge built in 1933. The project is an $11 million project, taking two years for completion. Construction was shut down last summer, and this past winter it went to 24/7. For those with the interest, check out the Maine DOT site for the new bridge, or Historic Bridges for the old turn bridge.
A Grand Adventure at Grand Falls!
No, we don't paddle over the falls - but we will walk past them on the way from the dock to the hut.
August 20-21

BUT YOU MUST ACT NOW TO SNAG SOME SUMMER FUN IN OUR OWN BACKYARD!!

CVOA has a great group of outdoor enthusiasts hiking, paddling and driving for our overnight adventure at the Maine Huts and Trails' most remote hut.

We have about two dozen CVOAers signed up ...Glenn and Peg Bickford, Jan Doherty, Susan Fraser, Bill Haefele, Sandy Jamison, The Gamache Family, Gail Miller, John Morey, Jim Myatt, John & Charlotte Pease, Nancy Perry, Marcel Poulin, The Rohde Family and Pete and Judy Weston. and room for just about 6 or 7 more.

But you must act now ... we've reserved the entire 30-bed hut and the deadline looms for final payment. Let's fill it up so everyone pays just $80 per person.

If you'd like to join the group, you must let Nancy know by July 8. Payments are due July 15. If we fill the hut, the cost will be about $80 per person for lodging, taxes, tips and three meals! Warning: The price goes up if we have less than 30 ... so spread the word.

If you're renting a canoe or kayak ... tandem or solo ... it's $30 per boat (not per person) for the two-day trek. It's a deal!

Whether you're paddling the 6-mile stretch of the Dead between the Flagstaff and Grand Falls huts or hiking the 7.8 wooded trail or driving in, you'll be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the majestic falls, a hot shower, a great meal and a bed in one of the bunkhouses that make up the complex.

You can find more details on our web site ... www.cvoutdoors.com.

 Summer time at the Range
Weekly Trap Shoots on Sundays only

July is here and everyone is having summer fun!  So much so, that our Saturday Trap Shoots have not been well attended.  As such, we are suspending the Saturday Trap Shoots until the fall.

Organized Sunday Trap Shoots will continue from 9am to noon.  Also, if you have been trained on the operation of the trap machine, you may organize your own shoot anytime!  If you would like to get trained, come by any Sunday morning 20 minutes before the scheduled shoot.  Once again, if you do not have your own shotgun, one of our members would be happy to let you try theirs and tutor you through a round. Once you dust your first clay, you'll be hooked!

The CVOA Range is open to the public during daylight hours. For non-members it is only $5 per shooter for access to the rifle, pistol, and archery ranges.   If a member is not on premise, the public may park outside the gate and walk in.  The kiosk just inside the gate has guest passes with liability waivers (or applications for membership) and a money drop box.  We hope you come by and experience our beautiful location!
Happy July to All!

Your kids are welcome at the range, too; the Corcorans and the House family have made trap shooting a family sport.

Golf at Lac Megantic
Two Jim's and a Jay.
Saturday, June 25

As twelve CVOA golfers crossed the border into Canada Saturday morning June 25 to play golf at Club de Golf du Lac Megantic, the Canadian Customs officer told us to expect a great day since the course was in terrific shape. And he was right.

Jim Myatt won both closest to the pin on holes #2 & #12 and Elise Gebhardt won closest to the pin for ladies on #2. We found the golf was great and with the exchange rate the price was a bargain for 18 holes and a cart.

We enjoyed a barbecue after at the Gebhardts' home at Sugarloaf.

Many thanks to Zach Zondlo, Head Professional at Sugarloaf for lending us the closest to the pin stanchions and Sandy Osterrieder for creating goody snack packs for the golfers and prizes.

Board, Member and Activities Meetings
June 26

We had a great turnout for our meetings and BBQ at the Town of Carrabassett Valley Town Park. We had a great turnout of 10 board members and 16 members-at-large for the BBQ and board meeting; members are always welcome at our meetings.

On Sunday morning, Betsy Chapman led her Adventure Committee at a meeting about upcoming events, what other events would be popular, and how to develop a system to give email notice to those interested in last-minute hikes, kayaking, and fishing. They are always looking for more trips, and just need ideas and leaders.

At noon, Joe Loughran put together a great BBQ with his marinated chicken and pork, cooked to perfection. We had about 25 members enjoying the lunch, with food contributions brought to share.

At 1:00, our quarterly Board and Member Meeting began. President John Morey conducted a productive meeting. We covered a number of items, including the standard reports from the secretary, treasurer, and Range chairman: Neal told us about progress on the grant for a 5-Stand at the range. Discussion was also held regarding Camp North Woods scholarships, CVOA merchandise liquidation, trip leader subsidy of $5 per participant, and the free trips given by our tour operator for the Telluride trip. Betsy Chapman gave a detailed report on upcoming and past events.
