News for our profession
June 2025

The President's Corner
Laura McMillan, President
May was a big month at NACM Business Credit Services! First, as you know, Credit Congress was held in Cleveland, Ohio. I have been hearing about Credit Congress since I started interviewing for my role a year ago and it was great to finally attend. There is something special about a conference where people attend with colleagues and others who share the same passion for their profession. There was a friendliness and collegiality that is often missing at other conferences.
| | | |
The educational sessions were numerous and excellent. And the closing night party was epic! One vendor who goes to many conferences told me, “this is the only conference where there is a dance party and everyone dances!” Save the dates now for June 7-10, 2026, in St. Louis. We would love to see you there!
The second event that made this such a big month, was that our Board of Directors approved a new strategic plan for the organization. A strategic plan sets out a path forward. As Lewis Carroll (of Wonderland fame) said “if you don’t know where you’re going, any road will get you there.” So, it’s helpful to decide where we want to go and chart a path to get there! In the coming months I’ll use this space to share much more about the content of that plan and how it will impact you. Afterall, this is a membership organization and everything we do, we do for you!
P.S. I want to make sure you see the article below that I asked John Woods, our data contribution guru (aka Data Operations Manager) to write. Contributing your A/R data is a great way to help out the credit professional industry and it only works when everyone participates. Don’t hesitate to reach out to John to learn more.

Where do Credit Reports Come From?
We all know that accurate credit reports are critical for making credit decisions; but where do they come from? They come from you! When you report your monthly commercial accounts receivable files, they are uploaded to the NACM National Database and in most cases, to Experian. Those confidential trade lines appear on the credit reports where they are used by credit professionals to extend credit. More than 10,000 businesses nationwide rely on NACM for credit information. By contributing your data, you’re supporting the entire NACM commercial credit community.
| | | | |
Reporting your company’s payment data will strengthen your customers’ financial position by keeping their credit history robust, accurate and current, and profitable companies tend to purchase more products. Reporting data also can work as a leverage tool with slow-paying customers. If a customer knows that their payment habits are being reported, they may be more likely to pay the reporting company before a company that doesn’t report.
Reporting your data saves you time – and money! You can reduce the amount of time it takes to prepare for your industry group meetings, and you can sign up for non-member credit reference checking. With non-member credit reference checking, customers can get credit references from you without you needing to have a member of your staff take the time to make the reference manually. It’s free, and a great member benefit if you contribute your data.
About 1/3 of our members currently contribute their data on a monthly basis. We would like this to be 100%! It’s quite easy and we’re happy to help you get started.

Travel Advice from the TSA: Avoid Juice Jacking in airports
Cyber criminals are targeting people in airports to try and steal personally identifiable information and money. These scams include hijacking USB ports and infiltrating devices via free public Wi-Fi.
“Juice jacking” is when cyber criminals load malware onto public USB charging stations, allowing them to access electronic devices as they are being charged. That malware is then used to lock the device or export personal data and passwords directly to the perpetrator.
Here are some suggestions for how you can protect yourself: MSN

Chartered in 1670, Canada's oldest retailer closes after 355 years.
The doors have officially closed. On Sunday, June 1, 2025, the Hudson’s Bay Company ended its centuries-long run as a department store chain in Canada. After months of liquidation sales and public speculation, the retailer’s final locations, including its once-iconic downtown flagships, ceased operations, drawing to a close one of the most storied and enduring chapters in Canadian commerce. What was once the world’s longest continually operating commercial enterprise as a department store chain is now relegated to history books, marking a sobering moment for Canadian retail, culture, and national identity.
