Welcome, Ruth!

Welcome to our new Secretary/Parish Administrator, Ruth Rock!  We had several good candidates for the job, but Ruth had two areas of expertise that we weren't expecting.  She is an Episcopalian--so she understands our unique language.  And, she has twenty years of experience in being a catechist in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program!  On her first day at work, she assisted with two groups of 4-year-olds in the atrium.  Read more about Ruth on our website.  We know that you will enjoy getting to know her!  Her usual hours at the church are 9:00 am until 3:00 pm Tuesday through Friday.

First GraceWorks Product Available!

Two Christmas cards, designed by Benjamin Hart and produced by a number of enthusiastic GraceWorks volunteers, will be available for sale on Sunday, November 16!  These are, of course, handmade cards, and they are made of the finest materials.  For this initial run, the cost will be $2.50 each or, when you buy nine, you will get a tenth for free-which translates into buying a pack of ten cards for $22.50.  Supplies will be limited, so we suggest that you buy quickly.

Feed Your Spirit

For more than a year, we have been having our Celtic Eucharist on the third Sunday of each month.  We have decided to introduce some variety into the service--using different types of music and experimenting with alternative liturgies--and, at times, not including a celebration of the Eucharist.  We are calling the service "Feed Your Spirit"--and we hope that this worship opportunity will truly "feed your spirit."  We will continue to include all of the musicians who have been participating in the Celtic service.

Sacred Rhythms Group

Do you desire a closer relationship with God?  Do you wish for the opportunity to slow down and listen for the Holy?  Join us on Wednesdays in Advent and Christmas for a 9 week study of the ancient Christian practices presented in the book, Sacred Rhythms, by Ruth Haley Barton.  Topics will include prayer, sabbath, discernment, and a rule of life, plus other spiritual practices that have guided Christians for centuries on a journey toward the peace of God's presence.  We will gather at 6:30 starting on Dec. 3 and ending on Feb 11 (skipping Dec. 24 and Dec. 31).  You will want to purchase the book and read the introduction and chapter one prior to our first discussion.

Quoting from Barton, "The longing for significance, the longing for love, the longing for deep and fundamental change, the longing for a way of life that works, the longing to connect experientially and even viscerally with Someone beyond ourselves--these longings led me to search out spiritual practices and establish life rhythms that promised something more."

This group will be led by Mark Richard, Companion with The Society of Jesus Compassionate.

Contributions to All Saints Camp and Conference Center

The Diocese requested that we take a special offering for All Saints Camp and Conference Center on All Saints Sunday.  We did take an offering but didn't do much promotion ahead of time.  So, along with a number of other churches, we are extending this campaign through the month of November. All Saints is a valuable asset to our Diocese and has been influential in the lives of many diocesan youth over the years.  Most of our younger clergy have grown up going to camp at All Saints.  Unfortunately, All Saints has been struggling financially for several years and must become more financially independent.  Please think about making a donation.  If you want to give through the church, either make out a check to All Saints--or to Grace Church, indicating that the money is for All Saints.

Update on Kroger contributions

Many of us have registered our Kroger Plus cards to indicate that a percentage from our purchases are designated to Grace School.  If you haven't done so, one piece of information that you will need is our organization number, which is 88636.  If you have any difficulty with getting your card registered on the Kroger website, please contact Tom Schmidt. He is also happy to do it for you, if you would like!  This is a significant and painless way to contribute to Grace School.  Thanks!

GraceWorks Update

Since we have a little money in the bank, we were able to move ahead with acquiring some basic silk screen-printing equipment and supplies for producing special Christmas cards for sale to all would like to use them.  Our Assistant Rector has designed three beautiful choices that will be produced through the silk screening process.  A fourth card will feature the Grace stained glass window of "mother and child."  Getting our first products out is an important milestone along the road to developing an industry that can make a difference in the lives of many Hopkinsville residents who are living on the edge financially.  (Update of October 1:  The equipment has arrived and is being set up in the Red House.  Several church members will be attending the Thistle Farms National Convention in Nashville, October 12-14, in an effort to learn more about how that program works so that we can replicate aspects of what Thistle Farms has accomplished in our GraceWorks program.  GraceWorks Group meets again on October 15 at 4:00 pm and welcomes others to get involved.) (Update as of October 26:  The Thistle Farms National Convention was very inspiring! A room in the red house is now prepared for our first run of Christmas cards--hopefully this week.)  (Update as of November 13: It's happening!  Production is in process!)

This has been a great series, and our last mini-concert will be Thursday, November 20, at noon, with Steve Wiggin at the organ.

Community Thanksgiving Service

Grace Church will be hosting the annual community Thanksgiving service, sponsored by the Christian County Ministerial Association.  The service will be on Tuesday, November 25, at 7:00 pm, with Rev. Buddy Slaughter of Means Avenue Baptist Church preaching.  Hopefully we will have a good turnout of Grace members--a show of support to our community and especially to the Ministerial Association.

Fifth Sunday Food Drive for Aaron McNeil House

Since November has five Sundays, we will have an ingathering of food for AMH on November 30.  Their most pressing need continues to be for peanut butter, so, if you're not sure what you want to bring, peanut butter is always appreciated.

Adult Forum

We completed our first twenty-one sessions of "Living the Questions,"  and yesterday morning we began a seven-session series entitled "Painting the Stars: Science, Religion and an Evolving Faith." This is a thought-provoking topic presented on DVD by a stimulating variety of speakers/teachers.  Each session stands alone, so feel free to join us if you are interested and available.

The Monday night series is continuing and open to all.

Weddings at Grace

Please note on our website that we have added a page for "Weddings at Grace"--including information about use of the facilities for weddings of non-church members--for a fee, of course.  The page can be accessed through "About" on the menu at the top of the home page, as well as through the icon at the bottom of the home page.  Take a look!
