This Sunday, we hear James warn against selfish ambition, while the disciples quarrel over which one of them is the greatest. Jesus tells them the way to be great is to serve. Then, to make it concrete, he puts in front of them a flesh-and-blood child. We are called to welcome the children God puts in front of us, to make room for them in daily interaction, and to give them a place of honor in the assembly. | |
Our newest members will be installed at worship this Sunday. Please pray for them, introduce yourself, say hello, invite them to coffee 💖

We celebrate the baptism of Clara Controne, daughter of Natalie & Jake Controne, this Sunday at 11am worship.

Dear Lord of Life,
Yesterday, September 18, was the official day of my ordination anniversary. 10 years ago, I gathered with friends and family in my home congregation, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Kettering, OH, along with pastors, and my new Bishop from South Carolina. The community there prayed for me and for my ministry that was just beginning. Then, the pastors and the Bishop gathered around me and laid their hands on my head and shoulders while praying for God’s Spirit to come upon me. There was a weight in this moment that I did not expect but which, to me, represented the importance and the preciousness of the work to which I was being called. 10 years later, I have grown more comfortable with the weight, but I can assure you that not a day goes by that I am unaware of its presence. This was a day that I will not soon forget!
This past weekend, you all provided me with a memory that will be held right there with my ordination service. I cannot fully express my gratitude for the outpouring of love and support that you all showed to me in honor of my 10th anniversary of ordination. I am deeply touched that you all took the time to participate in the recognition, the cards, the cake, the gift, and the cookies (I can tell you which part was my kids’ favorite!). You all affirmed for me again that we are in this journey together, that we can celebrate together, and that together we will witness the work of God happening among us. It was a gift that I received that cannot be captured in a cake or a card and it was a gift that I will treasure for years to come. Please know that wherever I find myself for my 20, 30, and maybe even 40th anniversaries, this past Sunday will hold a special place in my heart. Thank you.
God love each of you and I do too,
Pastor David
