Got questions about the Excelsior Scholarship?
The Excelsior Scholarship, signed into law today (April 13) by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, will change how many middle-income families pay for college. FLCC has launched a website with basic information at
www.flcc.edu/excelsior. The college will address the program at the April 29 Open House and will hold four information sessions in early May.
The Financial Aid/Excelsior Scholarship Information Sessions will cover the new program and serve as a workshop for filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at the dates and locations below:
- Tuesday, May 2: Newark Campus Center, 1100 Technology Parkway, off Route 88, Room 118
- Thursday, May 4: FLCC Main Campus, 3325 Marvin Sands Drive, Canandaigua, Room 3325
- Tuesday, May 9: Victor Campus Center, 200 Victor Heights Parkway, off Route 251, Room 201
- Wednesday, May 10: Geneva Campus Center, 63 Pulteney St., Room 137
The information session runs from 6 to 7 p.m. and participants are welcome to stay for a FAFSA completion workshop from 7 to 9 p.m.
Those staying for the workshop should bring their 2015 parents' tax returns and students' returns, if they file. FAFSA workshop participants should get a federal student aid
ID before attending by clicking here.
Seating is limited. Register for the workshops at (585) 785-1276 or email to

New degree: Nutrition and dietetics
FLCC has recently received state approval to offer an associate degree in nutrition and dietetics, starting fall 2017.
 |
|
 |
Izy Grooms, coordinator of the new nutrition and dietetics program |
Nutrition and dietetics addresses the rising need for preventative health care and treatment of diet-related illnesses. The state Labor Department forecasts faster than average job growth within the field over the next several years. This two-year program prepares students for transfer into related bachelor's degree programs. Course titles include Nutrition in the Life Cycle, Sports Nutrition and a Culinary Fundamentals lab.
"This degree fills a gap in the region for transfer opportunities. There are no similar two-year programs within 90 miles of FLCC, but there are five schools with bachelor's degrees," noted Izy Grooms, assistant professor of biology. "The program can also supplement the education of personal trainers, coaches and others health and wellness professionals."
For more information, click here or call the FLCC One Stop Center at (585) 785-1000. The approval of nutrition and dietetics follows another new degree approval: health care studies, also to be offered starting fall 2017.

Signups for Early College Scholars
FLCC is now accepting applications for the
Early College Scholars program for summer and fall 2017. This program is for high school students 18 or younger who want to get a head start on a college degree. Graduating seniors may take advantage of the scholarship the summer immediately following graduation.
The college offers a scholarship that will fund up to 50 percent of tuition for up to 7 credits each semester at any FLCC location or online. For example, tuition for a typical three-credit course would be $275, instead of the regular $549. With required fees, the total would be $332 for a regular class and $380 for an online class.
Costs for developmental studies courses - those meant to help improve skills - are even lower, a total of $141 for an in-seat course, and $189 for an online course. These courses help students who do not score well on placement tests get up to speed before starting college-level work.
Students in the Gemini program must have a minimum 2.5 GPA to be an Early College Scholar. Enrollment is first-come, first served. For a printable scholarship application,
