Minister's Musings

Dear Friends,

Does it seem like this Summer was an odd one for anyone else? It was very busy here for starters, with the floor project and 2 weeks of camp. Every Saturday in June was busy as well. And the weather was odd, not really the usual beach weather we are used to, but then a few days that were beyond sweltering! And so here we are in September, returning to life as usual.

This Sunday we will celebrate the beginning of the academic year by blessing the backpacks and other school supplies. I would ask all those returning to school, be they teachers, students, administration, or support staff, to bring in something from school: a backpack, a grade book, or a bookbag, and we will ask a special prayer for the beginning of the school year.

The beginning of the new academic year reminds us also of the importance of our own faith education. We are not a “one and done” faith community, meaning we say a prayer, accept Jesus, and bam…salvation is ours! We believe that coming to faith is a process that begins with baptism and continues throughout our lives. We are “moving on toward perfection” as our forebears in the faith would have said. Spiritual growth is an education, a process that continues and never really stops. We learn what it means to grow into the likeness of Jesus. We educate ourselves on social issues so that we can be more knowledgeable and make a real difference.

We can’t act as change agents for Gaza or for climate change, for example, if we don’t educate ourselves on the facts that inform those issues.

As we begin another school year, let's commit ourselves to growing in the faith as well.

And don’t forget to join us and invite a friend or family member for Sundae Sunday on September 13th, when we are planning a Sunday School party to celebrate with our kids and each other. This is the perfect time to invite your children and grandchildren or maybe your neighbors to join us for ice cream, popcorn, and games. And we are dedicating our new floor that day as well. It's gonna be a great Autumn! See you then!

'Stewardship At Its Best'

What a wonderful example of good stewardship and teamwork happened at Wesley Knox this summer. So many exemplary aspects of a church community were demonstrated.

To name a few-

... The value of good planning and preparation

... The generosity of financially giving to support the project

... Numerous congregants willingly stepping forward to do whatever was needed using their time and talents to get the job done

Church is a community and working together for a common goal puts our beliefs into action.

So many individuals are worthy of special thanks, but there is no way I could ever list them here. Just know that all you did was really appreciated and gave wonderful results. Thank you!

Becoming an Intercultural Church

What does it mean to go beyond simple inclusion or diversity initiatives and move toward genuine transformation?

Beginning October 14, this six-session interactive course will help ministry teams and individuals explore practical ways to build intercultural communities rooted in deep listening, shared power, responsibility, and hope.

Led by Rev. Dr. Hyuk Cho of the Vancouver School of Theology, the series will connect intercultural theology and biblical reflection with the lived realities of congregations. Participate as an individual or as part of a congregational team. Learn more and register on CHURCHx.

Please let Rev. Michelle know if you are interested in joining with others from our SW London Shared Ministry to learn together.
