UNT Dallas hires new Chief of Staff

The University of North Texas at Dallas (UNT Dallas) has named Dr. Macario Hernandez as its first Chief of Staff. Dr. Hernandez was selected as the top candidate for the position after a nationwide search. He began the newly created cabinet position on July 27 and has joined the UNT Dallas leadership team, reporting directly to University President Bob Mong.
Dr. Hernandez joined the university after spending more than 20 years as a bilingual teacher and school administrator, supporting the educational needs of K-12 students in Dallas ISD. He most recently served as principal at Trinidad “Trini” Garza Early College High School (Garza), where he led the campus to nationwide accolades including the National Title-I Distinguished School Award in 2018 and the National Blue-Ribbon Award from the United States Department of Education in 2021.
In this new role, Hernandez will serve as a key strategist representing the President in critical support roles, while focusing on local, political, school district and legislative initiatives. He also will be involved in university decision-making, administrative operations and the highest-priority work of the university.

Top 10 Ways To Conserve Energy
By Maya Palavali

Time your showers— With record high temperatures, Texas is going through a drought this summer, according to NBC. Conserving water is key, which can be easily done through cutting back on unnecessary water usage. Instead of not showering as a whole, set a timer for your shower every day. If you usually take longer showers, lower the time each day by five minutes, or so. That way, you help the world and stay clean. Everyone will thank you for it, too.

Romay Davis is a Virginia native who enlisted in the Army in 1943, following in the footsteps of her five brothers. There she became a member of the 688th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the largest all Black, all women, group to serve in the war. The unit was a byproduct of the Women’s Army Corps created by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. At the urging of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and Mary McLeod Bethune, the President aimed to create a more racially inclusive Army unit for African Americans.

Defense attorneys say the Dallas County Sheriff's Department is opening up letters intended for their jailed clients.

Why are Dallas County jailers opening mail lawyers send to locked up clients?

The sheriff’s department says it’s to look for contraband, but defense attorneys say the county is violating their clients’ constitutional rights.
By Kelli Smith

The Dallas County Sheriff’s Department is opening attorneys’ letters meant for jailed clients, prompting outcries from defense lawyers who argue the information is privileged and jailers aren’t following legal procedures. Elizabeth Lutton, a legal advisor for the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department, told the Dallas County Criminal Defense Lawyers Association last week employees open all letters, including from attorneys, to look for contraband, particularly as jails nationwide “are experiencing a security issue with paper correspondence,” according to a letter obtained by The Dallas Morning News.

That James Webb Telescope is so amazing. NASA pointed it into the darkness of space, and suddenly saw the truth—-stars and galaxies we never knew existed. At the speed of light, that’s a look back 13 billion years. I wish all of America could see more clearly right here on Earth just about Jan. 6, 2021. It doesn’t take a telescope.
The Path

As we walk through life's journey, we leave footprints. Some just show where we are going. Others redirect us when we get lost. Still others remain to guide those we leave behind. I see your footprints.
