Thoughts from James P. Cronin
Wow....summer is really hitting us this year and Mother Nature is challenging us with lots of hot sunny days. The course is staying in great shape thanks to the constant work of our ground crew and lots of watering! Hopefully you have noticed that we continue to make improvements to the course. The ladies and seniors are enjoying the new tees at #8, and the men are griping about the long drive from the back of #13! Lake Ginsberg is filling up and starting to take on life as a major water feature for the course. It will be filled to capacity no later than August 5th.
Many people know that the Cronin family has been involved in this course for a long time, but most don't realize just how long a family affair this has been. Back in 1929, Patric Cronin, Greens Superintendent of Glens Falls Country Club along with Mark Cassidy and Guy Wilkinson started planning the first 9 hole course on the recently purchased Clover Leaf Farm and Edward Turner Farm on the "Glen Road". On Saturday, July 14, 1930 the Queens Village Golf Club officially opened with about 75 players from around the area ready to take their first stab at the 9 original holes.
The course had great success throughout the 1930's and in 1945 Robert J. Cronin (son of Patrick Cronin - course designer) purchased the club from sole owner Mark Cassidy. Bob was an avid golfer, playing mostly at Glens Falls Country Club and in fact still holds the course record for the front nine ( a 7 under par 29!). The years moved on, the course added 9 more holes and we continue to upgrade and change the course to meet the needs and desires of our members and regular golfers.
The Cronin family is thrilled to have a history of over 80 years involvement in this resort. John and I, with our families and staff couldn't be prouder of the way the course has improved over the years. With our cabins, pool, bar, restaurant, "The Edge" and so many other activities Cronin's Golf Resort is a fun and enjoyable place to be. All in all, what makes it special though is you - our members and golfing guests. Without you, where would we be? Your important and your thoughts on the course and the resort are as well. Please feel free to share with John or I your suggestions at any time.
As summer suns bear down on us, we are hoping for a little help from Mother Nature. Some steady rain would be welcome - just bring your umbrella and enjoy it! We will keep watering the greens and fairways, the beer will be cold and the staff ready to help. Come on out and enjoy golfing and relaxing with us this summer.
We have several tournaments coming up, and most are open to additional players. Check at the Pro Shop for details on signing up to any tournament. Remember if a tournament goes out in the morning, the course may have a sign up saying it's closed, but we often re-open in the mid afternoon, so give us a call or stop by.
We are looking forward to seeing everyone during the rest of July and August. Hit them straight!

Birdies and Bogies, by Dave Bulmer
Amazing to read the history of Cronin's Golf Resort, from it's days as the Queen Village Course to its current look and playability as Cronin's Golf Resort. Needless to say the many generations of the Cronin families involvement have made golfing here a great experience for locals and visitors alike.
With the number of visiting players as well as members getting as much golf in as possible it's important to think about pace of play. What do I mean? On a course like Cronin's we should be playing at a pace to finish a round of 18 in approximately 4 to 4. 25 hours. Yes, that includes any necessary stops to "The Edge" or "The Oasis". To keep it enjoyable for everyone, we simply should be keeping up with the foursome ahead of us.
Lost balls are a pain in the neck and no one wants to go home missing to many new Pro V1's. But, when you hit a ball out of bounds try to plan ahead for your next move. As soon as everyone else in your foursome has hit their tee shot, hit a provisional so you don't have to come back to the tee. If your out on the fairway taking a 2nd or 3rd shot, go ahead and hit a provisional from as close to your original ball as possible. This will save a lot of time in the long run.
The provisional rules are simple. You can play a provisional on any ball you believe to be out of bounds, or lost in a hazard or somewhere in bounds. For example many people ( well me for one!) will slice a ball on the 4th hole. It is easy to lose a ball in bounds. Instead of hunting for a while and then heading back to the tee, it's faster to simply hit a provisional and get moving. When hunting for your ball please take just a minute or two to look and then move on.
The rule on hitting a provisional is that it remains a provisional until you hit it past the point where you believe your original ball lies or went out of bounds. Once you have hit it you can not play your original ball if you find it behind you and must continue playing with your provisional as your new ball. Of course, a penalty stroke comes in to play here.
How else can you speed up play? Lots of ways. On busier days join another group if you are a twosome or a single. If your group is playing a bit slower, please let the following group play through. Playing "ready golf" is a great way to keep moving as well. Yes, the rules of golf call for the person furthest from the hole to be the next shot. But if people are looking for a ball, aren't ready or just need time, talk to your foursome and then get up there and take your shot. Unless it's a major tournament, no one should mind people playing "out of order" in an effort to keep the game moving.
With lots of players carrying digital cameras and smart phones I know there are some great photos being taken. I could really use some new ones so please send them to me when you can. JPG format is best! They can be sent to davebulmer@mac.com, or uploaded on the Cronin's Golf Resort Facebook Page: Cronins Golf Resort on Facebook
This year, like always, lets continue to lead the way as members and guests at Cronin's Golf Resort and do our best to keep the course in great shape! Please replace your divots, fix an extra ball mark every time you have one to fix of your own and please bring the empties, stogies and butts back to the clubhouse or the nearest recycling container!
Enjoy these warm sunny days at the north country's friendliest golf course.
