Let's Go for a Walk
Together We Can End Infant Abandonment
|
|
Our 5th Annual 5K Walk is just around the corner. Lace-up your favorite sneakers and let’s walk together on Saturday, March 10th at Amelia Earhart Park in Hialeah. Registration will begin at 7:30 AM.After a quick warm up walkers will take to the walking path at 8 AM.
After the walk, attendees will enjoy great food with fresh-off-the grill burgers and hot dogs, offered at a nominal price, and entertainment for all ages.
The walk has the full support of Senator Rene Garcia, Miami-Dade Commissioner Steve Bovo and other local leaders as well as the Hialeah Fire Department.
Registration is as easy as 1-2-3. You can join a team, create a team or sponsor a walker the choice is yours. Visit our website at
www.asafehavenfornewborns.com
; once there, you can register your team. Make sure to give it a name; then invite your friends to join you. The entry fee is $20 per walker and includes the event tee shirt. If you would like to participate, but won’t be able to attend, you can sponsor your friend or any walker.

If you know a student who needs Community Service Hours, they can earn those hours by simply registering for the walk and getting their family and friends to sponsor them. A total of 10 community service hours will be credited to the participating student (the walker) at the end of the event.
Proceeds from the walk will go towards funding the various programs the Foundation offers. In many cases, Safe Haven is the only recourse these young women have to turn to for assistance. Some have been hiding their pregnancy from their families or have been thrown out of their homes and living in the streets with no where to turn. They are alone and losing all hope in life. The risk of doing the unthinkable once the baby is born is high — throwing it away just as she felt they did to her. Only difference, the newborn can’t reach out for help and dies alone in a dumpster, field or canal. Our goal is to be there for the expectant mother before she does the unimaginable. To let her know that she is not alone.
Our mission is to put an end to this senseless act; but, we need your help. Monies raised at the event are used to maintain the programs offered; such as the 24/7 confidential help line, counseling, parenting, health related issues, adoption and confidentially placing a newborn at a safe haven location. To name a just a few.
The walk is open to people of all ages; everyone is welcomed. Come walk with us and help us take steps to eliminate the ultimate in infant abuse — abandonment.

At every 5K walk we release beautiful butterflies as a symbol of the hopes and dreams of all of us at Safe Haven for the newborn and the birth mom. The hope for a better life. The hope for change. The hope for a new beginning. Be a part of this tradition and send your well wishes with a delicate butterfly as your messenger.
If you or your organization would like to have a greater presence at the walk, please visit our webpage to see the

Did You Know...
Providing Support Through a Network of Programs
|
A Safe Haven for Newborns has partnered with local and statewide agencies to provide the services and support an expectant mother needs in her time of crisis. Often times, these young girls/women have been hiding their pregnancy from their families and friends for fear of being judged. Many times they are in their last month, weeks or even days of giving birth and have not had any type of prenatal care. Many have blocked out the fact that they are pregnant and when faced with the inevitable they do the unthinkable — by abandoning the newborn in an unsafe place resulting in the infant’s death.
Through the numerous connections Safe Haven has established, it is able to offer a network of services and support throughout all 67 Florida counties. When the expectant mother calls Safe Haven’s 24/7 Helpline, they are listened to and offered assistance. They are never questioned, judged or criticized. Instead they are supported and guided to the resources that are available to them in their area.
Some of the programs Safe Haven offers include:
- Referral assistance for any pregnancy related issues
- Providing them with the basic necessities
- Securing housing/shelter
- Referral counseling and parenting
- Adoption
And sadly, there have been times the outcome of leaving a newborn in an unsafe place results in the infant’s demise. In this case, the Foundation gives the abandoned infant a proper, dignified burial and is laid to rest in The Garden of Innocence. This is a special place at Woodlawn South Cemetery where a group of plots were donated for the infants’ peaceful, eternal rest.

Twenty precious, innocent newborns were welcomed into the world in 2017.
Many of the moms contacted us for assistance on our 24/7 helpline. We are never, ever judgemental as we know that it took each mom a great amount of courage and compassion to place their baby safely in the Safe Haven for Newborns program giving them a chance for a future they could not provide.
These babies are truly an emotional gift to me and our Safe Haven family of ambassadors.
As Gloria Hope, a Safe Haven for Newborns baby who is now 14 years old said, “Thank you Uncle Nick. If it wasn’t for A Safe Have for Newborns I would not be here today”.
I believed from the beginning if we saved only one life all of our efforts would be worthwhile; and that was 271 precious lives ago. It is very heart warming to know these precious children are now with their forever families growing up emotionally, physically, intectually and spiritually.
To quote a Florida Fire Chief, “You are doing great work that will impact eternity. God Bless you”.
Our mission continues……..
Sending you my best wishes,
Nick

What People Are Saying About Safe Haven
|
|
I am a grateful mother of a two & a half year old beautiful, healthy & precious little boy. His birth mother left him in safety at a hospital. All they were able to tell us was that she was very young. But what we know is that she did an amazing thing - because of her actions and this Safe Haven Law - she made our dreams come true. I am grateful to that young girl every day - it brings tears to my eyes. I pray that she may know in her heart that she has truly given a gift. I want to give of my time, resources - whatever I can, to show my gratitude and to help educate any woman who faces this situation. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts - for all the miracles in our life. Ellen

Thank You Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you do to save the lives of innocent little babies. If I would have had the chance that young girls and women have today with the Florida Safe Haven for Newborns option, I would have saved my baby’s life. There are babies now being fed, rocked and loved today because of everyone associated with the Gloria M. Silverio Foundation – “A Safe Haven for Newborns”. Anonymous
