269 Newborns Saved from Abandonment
|
|
When we began our mission to end infant abandonment 16 years ago, we said that if we saved just one newborn then all of our efforts would have been worthwhile. So can you imagine how we feel today that 269 precious babies, 17 this year alone, now have a future with lots of love from their forever families. It is a blessing to be able to come to the aid of these little, innocent babies. And we have you, our Safe Haven friends, to thank. If it is not for your generous support these 269 little babies would not have had a chance at life - might not be here today. It is because of your support that we are able to offer a 24/7 confidential multilingual hotline, prenatal care, counseling, parenting and more. Please consider being part of our cause and help us end infant abandonment. You can make a difference.

Thomas G. Abraham
2017 Monarch Award Recipient
|
Every year we make special mention of an individual in our community who strives to make the life's of others better. We, at Safe Haven, feel very honored and proud to count among our friends a person who has dedicated his life to helping the less fortunate. This year the Monarch Award is presented to Thomas G. Abraham, chairman of the board of the Anthony R. Abraham Foundation.
The Abraham family's charitable work and philanthropy has long been a family affair. The Anthony R. Abraham Foundation was created in 1976 by Anthony and Genevieve Abraham, Tommy's parents, with the goal to make a difference in the world; and they started close to home. Tommy and his sister, Norma Jean, were adopted as children and were raised with the philosophy of giving back. Something that both have taken very much to heart.
Thank you for making a real difference around the world in the lives of so many, especially children. You continue to carry on your Father's beautiful legacy. It is truly an honor to know you.

A Wonderland in Safe Haven Gala
|
|
The InterContinental Miami hotel served as this year’s backdrop for our annual celebration of the 269 babies that now have a chance to fulfill their dreams. As guests ascended the majestic marble staircase to the cocktail reception, they were greeted by an expansive display of silent auction items. Patrons enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres as they walked around the mezzanine taking in the selection of items that were waiting to go home with the highest bidder. Dr. Jaime Fernandez served as the Silent Auction emcee; thank you Dr. Fernandez for enlivening this part of the evening.
As in years past, local artist and Safe Haven friend, Roxy Sora, created the one-of-a-kind signature art piece for the gala, the fourth in the series. Through her talent, we have seen the Safe Haven baby grow before our eyes. Roxy, also generously donated from her most recent collection, Roxanna Zubia
From Art to Canvas
, a wearable art piece that had several patrons trying to outbid each other for the coveted poncho.
There was something for everyone. From certificates for weekend get-a-ways from several area hotels, a private wine class from Total Wine & More, a seven-day cruise from Carnival Cruise Lines, tickets to sporting events, Disney tickets, a basket of Bacardi spirits, golf and lunch at the private golf club Deering Bay Yacht and Golf Club, numerous certificates from some of the favorite restaurants in the area, as well as designer purses, electronics and much more.
Once the doors to the ballroom were opened, a Wonderland in Safe Haven awaited our new and old friends. Welcoming all to the evening’s festivities was Lauren Pastrano, CBS News anchor, who served as the emcee. Nick Silverio, host for the evening and founder of the Gloria M. Silverio Foundation, paid homage to The Anthony R. Abraham Foundation, the title sponsor for the event; and presented Tommy Abraham with the Foundation’s highest honor, the Monarch Butterfly Award. The Monarch butterfly signifies a new beginning, just what A Safe Haven for Newborns is all about. Also receiving recognition for her unwavering support was Gina M. Perez, a Safe Haven Ambassador since 2010. Mike Murphy, Vice President of Coastal Construction, shared with the group what it means to him to be part of Safe Haven and asked all those present to join him in supporting the life-saving mission to end infant abandonment.
After the delicious dinner and heart-warming presentations, the band, Tartara, took to the stage and everyone to the dance floor to dance the night away. Another wonderful evening was shared by all and our mission to continue to champion for the most vulnerable and defenseless among us keeps moving forward.

Nick's Corner
As a friend and supporter of Safe Haven, we will like to keep you informed every step of the way as together we further our mission to end infant abandonment. Going forward, we will be sending you a monthly e-newsletter to let you know how we are fulfilling are mission and where and how your donations and support are being used.
For our first e-newsletter, I would like to share with you recent highlights of some of the good things that are going on in our mission to save the lives of the most innocent and helpless among us, newborns, from the tragedy of abandonment:
- With a State Grant sponsored by Senator Rene Garcia, we are posting outdoor billboards in over 30 (upon availability) Florida counties creating greater Safe Haven awareness.
- We are launching a Community Service App for high school and higher education students this school year. A student will be able to fulfill their required community hours for Safe Haven wherever they live in Florida.
- We have developed and are implementing an on-going Social Media outreach campaign…eight new videos will be released over the next six months (here are a few of the titles—“Where Are They Now”-Safe Haven Babies; testimonials-“Women We Helped”, “Messages Focusing on the Youth”, “Getting Help”).
- Working with an attorney in Panama, we assisted in passing the Safe Haven for Newborns law in that country.
- We were also fortunate to appear in early June on the Trinity Broadcast Network and in July on the EWTN, the largest Catholic T.V. and Radio organization in the world.
Until next month, sending you my best wishes, Nick

A Few Words From Those Helped by Safe Haven

Safe Haven Was My Lifeline
|
I became pregnant unexpectantly at 20 years old. No where to turn, depressed and soon to be homeless. I contacted A Safe Haven for Newborns, They very patiently listened to my situation and then explained my options and connected me to the resources in my community, including a counselor. They were my lifeline during this most stressful, panic situation of my life. We were in contact at all stages of my pregnancy. I made the decision that it was in the best interest of myself and baby to place my baby in the Safe Haven program. I don't know what I would have done if it was not for the help of A Safe Haven for Newborns. - A.

Hi ...I wouldn't be the mother of the most beautiful little boy ever if it wasn't for this program, it should be in place everywhere. I had never heard of this program before the adoption agency we were using in Florida called us about our little boy. My son was found safe last year at this time. Today we are celebrating his first birthday... he has had a very rough first year with heart surgery being part of it, but is now doing very well. We feel so blessed to have him in our lives. Watching him grow and get stronger everyday, starting to walk with a smile on his beautiful little face. So we would like to thank A Safe Haven for Newborns and his very brave birth mom without her and this program we would not have this very special little guy in our lives.
