A Big Thank You

This note of gratitude goes out to Giant Food, Mason District Police, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, CROP Walk participants, and others who supported ACCA in September to help alleviate hunger in our neighborhood.

Many thanks to Giant Food in Annandale and Mason District Police for their support with recent food drives. On November 3,  you can drop food off at the Mason District Police Station at 6507 Columbia Pike at the drive sponsored by Fairfax County Mason District Police and the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association (NARFE) Chapter 1159.

We are so grateful to the wonderful volunteers of all ages who donated food and showed up to unload the huge delivery from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS) in Salt Lake City, Utah for the needy families served by the ACCA food pantry. Our pantry is well stocked for the season! Special thanks to the Annandale Virginia Stake Of the LDS for their tremendous support in this effort!

CROP Walk

Nearly 50 walkers and volunteers from eight ACCA churches and the Annandale High School Just World Club participated in the Annandale CROP Hunger Walk on October 15. ACCA president Sue Mairena welcomed the group and led them in the opening prayer. Mason District Supervisor Penny Gross greeted the walkers. She spoke of the strong need for human services in ACCA’s service area and in the Washington Metropolitan area. She also spoke of the hunger and refugee needs around the world. The CROP Hunger Walk raises money for Church World Service (CWS), which funds programs to fight hunger and poverty, support disaster victims and refugees globally and in the U.S. CWS will return part of the funds raised to ACCA. For information or to donate, please visit https://www.crophungerwalk.org/annandaleva.

Thank you to the ACCA churches who participated including: John Calvin Presbyterian, St. Barnabas’ Episcopal, Peace Lutheran, Ravensworth Baptist, St. Albans Episcopal, Warner Baptist, United Baptist, and Holy Spirit Catholic.

Triathlon Results

The annual FTKI triathlon was held on Aug 28 at Sleepy Hollow Recreation Association pool with assistance from the Sleepy Hollow Bath & Racquet Club. We had spectacular weather, lots of enthusiasm and a wonderful event. There were 103 racers, 35 volunteers and we raised just over $8k to benefit both the ACCA Child Development Center and Kisima Child Care Academy in Kenya.

Volunteers Needed

Volunteers perform all of the work that you've read about here, Our critical needs right now are for food captains, money captains, and for drivers transporting seniors. Please share these needs with your family, friends, and neighbors!

Food Captains - ACCA is looking for food captains to coordinate emergency requests for food with drivers who deliver groceries to needy clients within its service area.

Food captains receive requests from County and Inova social workers and then schedule drivers to deliver food to homes, coordinating with the food pantry. Tasks can be done from home but require use of a computer. Training is provided. Food captains are asked to work one week per quarter. Please contact us and we'll give you the details.

Be a Money Captain! - This role works with social workers to help needy neighbors pay for housing and other essentials. They arrange for payment of rent, utilities, prescriptions and other needs in accordance with ACCA guidelines. Time commitment for this remote role is one week per quarter. Training is provided, background check required. During that week, up to 8 hours work may be required during normal business hours for email and phone calls. Attendance at an annual meeting is required. Contact:  volunteers@accacares.org

Drivers - We partner with the Shepherd Center of Annandale/Springfield to provide critical transportation. We urgently need volunteer drivers who drive local seniors in Annandale, Springfield, and sections of Alexandria to medical appointments during the week and grocery shopping on weekends. Even if you have a limited amount of time to volunteer, this is a wonderful way to touch the lives of people who desperately need this service. You determine when, where, and how often you drive. Email: shepherdscas@vacoxmail.com
