The Rum Decade: Chronicling the Spirit's
Explosive Growth   By Wayne Curtis, The Daily Beast
Hemingway with rum

A dozen years ago there were two American craft distilleries focusing on rum: Celebration Distilling in New Orleans, and Prichard's Rum in Kelso, Tennessee. I visited both while researching my book, And a Bottle of Rum: A History of the New World in 10 Cocktails. And when the book was published in the summer of 2006 I could rest well, knowing I had done my homework and had included everything anyone could possibly need to know about modern American rums.

It was the best of timing. It was the worst of timing...

In response to devastation caused by last year's Hurricane Maria, Cruzan Rum has launched the Island Spirit Fund to support disaster relief efforts in the US Virgin Islands and across the US.

Michigan Craft Distillers Association Urges Consumers to Read the Labels to Determine Where Their Spirits are Really Coming From
glasses of bourbon
The craft distilling industry is growing, not only in Michigan but throughout the United States. Yet, there is concern about some of the spirits introduced into the marketplace as "craft" when in fact they may be purchased in volume from out-of-state producers, then bottled and distributed as a "local" product. This issue, as well as truth in labeling is something the Michigan Craft Distillers Association (MCDA) has been paying attention to since it was formed in 2014. Read more.

Inside Macallan's new, one-of-a-kind, £140 million subterranean distillery  By Neil Ridley and Joel Harrison, The Telegraph /UK
Editor's Note: ADI is focused on craft, but Macallan's new $186,000,000 distillery caught our eye.
Macallan_s latest _140 million venture _is bringing a touch of science fiction to Speyside
Imagine a single-malt distillery and you'll most likely conjure up somewhere nestled in a lush green glen, with a tall pagoda roof slowly bellowing peat smoke into the air, while casks lie around, awaiting clear spirit that will slowly mature into whisky.

This image is typical of the many distilleries dotted across Scotland, where the process of turning water, barley and yeast...

With his brewing dreams dashed, he found a new love in distillation   By Josh Davis, Houstonia

Grateful Dane Distilling Co. rum on the rocks
How an allergic reaction led Grateful Dane's Ian Mook to the rum game

In the last decade, craft beer has exploded. Since 2005, nearly 200 craft breweries have set up shop in Texas, a beastly 990 percent increase. But one Houston man is introducing another craft game to the Lone Star State rum distillation. Having lived in Golden, Colorado in the early '90s while his dad worked at Coors Brewing Company, Ian Mook has always been fascinated with the brewing process. Inspired by craft beer industry trailblazers... Read more

If everything Midas touched turned to gold, in the case of the 60-something Desmond Nazareth, everything he touches, including, agave, sugarcane and now mahua, seems to transform into distilled alcohol.

For Nazareth, promoter of Desmondji, an Indian brand specialising in distilled alcohol, liqueurs and the like, the latest two offerings, mahua alcohol and mahua liqueur, are testimony to his efforts to promote Indian spirits...
