Craft spirits distillers in Michigan fight for legislation to cut sales markup by half
Members of the Michigan Craft Distillers Association (MCDA) are celebrating the passing of a bill out of the Michigan Senate to reduce the markup charged on a distilled spirits product from 65% to 32.5%. The bill was first passed in the House in May 2021, and must now be presented to Governor Whitmer for consideration.
The HB 4842 bill would halve the markup charged on a distilled spirits product to 32.5% with the usage of 40% Michigan agriculture in the distilling of the base spirit, a positive step for local companies.
As it stands, distillers selling their products in Michigan must first sell them to the State, which acts as the wholesaler for spirits in Michigan. The State then applies a 65% markup to each bottle, starkly raising the cost to small craft distillers.
“HB 4842 is our signature piece of legislation; something MCDA has been working on for over five years,” said Jon O’Connor, MCDA president and co-owner of Long Road Distillers. “Having passed in both the Senate and the House, it will now be presented to the Governor for her consideration to sign into law. We want her to know how important this is to our industry and what a significant impact it will have for Michigan small distillers.” Read More on the Drinks Business.

Vermont Craft Distiller Becomes New England Tourist Attraction
Vermont has long been at the forefront of the Locavore, Farmer’s Market and Farm to Table culinary trends. It is far and away the nation’s best artisanal cheese producer as well as one of the very best states for craft beer. Craft distilling has followed suit, with many top Vermont brands such as legendary rye producer Whistle Pig, and the critically acclaimed and sought-after honey-based gins of Barr Hill Distilling. These are respectively America’s most awarded rye and gin. But the latest big thing in a state famed for the quality of its agriculture is Village Garage Distillery, a new facility in Bennington, Vermont that is making craft spirits out of locally grown corn and rye from the Green Mountain State. Whiskey in the Jar: New distilleries driving boom in Irish spirit sales
As Lord Henry Mountcharles gazes out into the field where generations of rock fans have been entertained since 1981, he reflects on a momentous journey. Thin Lizzy kick-started the annual Slane Castle gigs, which catapulted the natural amphitheatre by the banks of the River Boyne to international acclaim. And while the concerts remain, there is a different kind of whiskey in the jar for the Co Meath peer these days: he is the driving force behind Slane Irish Whiskey, one of the dozens of new distilleries feeding the enormous overseas demand for Irish spirits. Grain to Glass: How This NJ Distillery Operates in a League of Its Own
Few people truly understand the hard work and dedication that is required for that spirit to end up in your glass. Many producers try to shorten this journey by buying pre-distilled spirits and repackaging them as “craft,” “handmade,” or “local,” when the actual alcohol in the bottle is anything but. However, at one distillery in Central New Jersey, all of the distilling work is done right there on premises. The next time you revel in an expertly crafted drink in the second-floor lounge at Bellemara Distillery in Hillsborough Township, NJ, you can drink with a new outlook, knowing that the very spirit you are enjoying was crafted 15 feet away from you in a process known as grain to glass distilling.
