Two in hospital after distillery explodes in
Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada
By The Canadian Press
CLARKES BEACH, N.L.-Two workers were injured after a Newfoundland distillery exploded Friday morning in Clarke's Beach.
In a Facebook post, The Newfoundland Distillery Company says an employee suffered burns and smoke inhalation and is in stable condition at the Health Sciences Centre in St. John's.
It says another was held for observation overnight at the Carbonear General Hospital.
The company, which produces rum, gin, and other spirits, says there will be a full investigation into the cause of the incident, adding that the facility will remain closed until further notice.
The distillery is also thanking first responders "who all helped to ensure there were no further injuries and limit the level of damage."

Ten days when the Federal Government's biggest office was on North Main Street: 1919
By Timothy Brian McKee, Richland Source History Columnist
...The notion of outlawing alcohol had been hotly debated for generations; but in 1919 the US finally voted to actually change the Constitution and ban drinking. The new laws prohibited the manufacture and sale of alcohol... so the adventure was known as Prohibition.
Everyone could see it was a daunting task; perhaps impossible. Whoever the president appointed to head the Prohibition experiment faced a thousand angry mob leaders; ten thousand cunning rum-runners; a hundred thousand bootleggers; and millions of grumbling folks whose favorite saloon was not allowed to sell cocktails anymore. The new Federal Prohibition Commissioner was John F. Kramer from Mansfield, Ohio.

It's boom times for local distilleries: Best of KC 2018
By The Pitch Staff, Kansas City
|
|
|
The gang at J. Rieger & Co. |
Kansas City has always been a drinking town, and the endless stream of illegal liquor that flowed through our streets during Prohibition cemented that reputation. Ironically, though, the debauchery of those days also effectively shuttered KC's rich tradition of legal distilling. Some made it out alive: Holladay Distillery, founded in Weston, Missouri, in 1856, circumvented Prohibition laws by producing medicinal whiskey, and today, the company's portfolio includes the gold medal-winning, eco-friendly 360 Vodka. But other historic distilleries were not so lucky: J. Rieger & Co., founded in 1887 in the West Bottoms, did not see a fourth decade.
But everything old eventually becomes new again.

Six of the best artisan distilleries in Chicago

Chicago has got history when it comes to spirits. The city was a vocal centre of the temperance movement that led to Prohibition between 1920 and 1933, which in turn fuelled the illegal and widespread production of moonshine and rise of Al Capone's speakeasies. Today the city boasts a booming artisan distillery scene, the new generation producing small batch bourbon and rye whiskey, botanical gin and vodka, and even mezcal, kirsch and absinthe. Many have their own cocktail bars for those who want to make a night of it after a spirit-tasting tour. Tours and cocktails are generally priced at $10 - here are six of the best to check out.

As craft beer sales slow, Two Brothers and other brewers launch into spirits
By Greg Trotter, Chicago Tribune Contact Reporter
|
Jeremy Bogan, head distiller at Two Brothers Brewing, fills barrels with malt whiskey in Aurora on Nov. 1, 2018. In addition to brewing beer, the company is making spirits and roasting coffee. |
On a recent autumn morning at Two Brothers Brewing, co-founder Jason Ebel stood next to a 300-gallon still and explained the intricate art of making whiskey, a new enterprise for one of the oldest craft breweries in Illinois.
Two Brothers already sells vodka, gin, coffee liqueur and amaro - spirits that require less time to age - at various retail chains and bars in the Chicago area. Since 2012, the brewery has also made coffee, another fast-growing part of the business. With its craft beer business slowing, the Ebel brothers are finding new ways to grow sales.

London Just Got Its First Whiskey Vending Machine
By Shaunacy Ferro, Mental Floss
Guests at London's Napoleon Hotel don't need to wait for a bartender to order a quality Scotch; they can order it from the vending machine. As Lonely Planet reports, the hotel now has a single-malt whiskey vending machine courtesy of Whisky-Me, a whiskey subscription service.
Whisky-Me was launched by the founders of Black Rock, a whiskey bar located in the Napoleon Hotel. Each month, subscribers receive a roughly 1.7-ounce pouch of rare or exclusive single malt Scotch in the mail for as low as $9 each. But between now and the end of December, you don't have to be a subscriber to get a taste of the action. Just hit up the vending machine at the hotel instead.

FRANKFORT, Ky. - Bourbon has been on a winning streak for years now. The quintessential American whiskey enjoys a global reputation for quality, with demand outstripping supply and prices steadily rising. But in one arena, it can't complete with world's other great whiskeys: age.
