GOOD NEWS
1.3 million people in the Netherlands are older than 75 years—and one large supermarket chain is making sure they’re not getting too lonely in their elder years. The Dutch government with its campaign, ‘One Against Loneliness’, has galvanized organizations, towns, companies, and individuals to find solutions. The grocer giant, Jumbo, is doing their part with its innovative chatty check outs. The idea for the ‘Kletskassa’, which translates to ‘chat checkout’, originated more than two years ago—and in the summer of 2019 the first Kletskassa was opened in Vlijmen in Brabant. This resulted in many positive reactions from customers—and now Jumbo is expanding the initiative further: By this time next year, there will be chat checkouts in 200 stores across the country where people can go for a conversation.

COVID-19 in the News
At a mostly virtual recent global COVID-19 summit on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meeting, President Joe Biden pledged another 500 million doses of Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine for lower- and middle-income countries and rallied support for other measures to end the pandemic, including improving the supply of medical equipment and aligning around common goals.
(CIDRAP, September 22, 2021)
At least three promising antivirals for covid are being tested in clinical trials, with results expected as soon as late fall or winter, said Carl Dieffenbach, director of the Division of AIDS at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, who is overseeing antiviral development. The top contender is a medication from Merck & Co. and Ridgeback Biotherapeutics called molnupiravir, Dieffenbach said. Two others include a candidate from Pfizer, known as PF-07321332, and AT-527, an antiviral produced by Roche and Atea Pharmaceuticals. If the antiviral pills prove effective, the next challenge will be ramping up a distribution system that can rush them to people as soon as they test positive.
(Medscape, September 24, 2021)
Rural Americans are currently twice as likely to die from COVID-19 infections compared with their urban peers, according to Kaiser Health News and data from the Rural Policy Research Institute (RPRI) at the University of Iowa. Since March 2020, 1 in 434 rural Americans have died from COVID-19, compared with roughly 1 in 513 urban Americans. And unlike deaths in urban areas, the vaccine rollout has not slowed COVID-19 fatalities in rural parts of the country due to low uptake. Short-staffed hospitals and limited access to healthcare are also contributing factors, the researchers say.
(CIDRAP, September 30, 2021)
Hospitals and nursing homes around the U.S. are bracing for worsening staff shortages as state deadlines arrive for health care workers to get vaccinated against COVID-19. With ultimatums taking effect this week in states like New York, California, Rhode Island and Connecticut, the fear is that some employees will quit or let themselves be fired or suspended rather than get the vaccine. "How this is going to play out, we don't know. We are concerned about how it will exacerbate an already quite serious staffing problem," said California Hospital Association spokesperson Jan Emerson-Shea.
(Medscape, September 28, 2021)

The American Nurses Association (ANA) has pleaded with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to address the ongoing nurse staffing shortage as a national crisis. The ANA has asked the HHS to deploy policies to bring stakeholders to identify short- and long-term solutions to staffing challenges, work with the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) on methodologies and approaches to promote payment equity, educate the nation on the importance of the COVID-19 vaccine, sustain a nursing workforce that meets current and future staffing demands and provide additional resources including recruitment and retention incentives to address the nurse staffing shortages across the nation. After gathering at the World Health Assembly’s 74th Annual meeting the World Health Organization (WHO) considered Global Strategic Directions for Nursing and Midwifery (SDNM 2021-2025) and adopted it with a Resolution (WHA74.15). This resolution calls on partners and stakeholders from within the health sector and beyond to engage in and support the implementation of the global strategic directions for nursing and midwifery 2021–2025. AHNA 2021 Conference Poster Presentations

Increased recognition and awareness is our goal for the 2021 Conference posters. One benefit of having the Virtual Conference was that the poster presenters prepared 3 minute vignettes for their posters. AHNA staff has always wanted to heighten awareness about the submitted posters, and this was an opportune time to roll that out. So we are going to include the Practice Posters in enews stretched out throughout the remainder of the year.

Feedback about including the poster presentations in our newsletters would be appreciated. Thank you to the authors for supporting the greater dissemination of holistic nursing projects and knowledge.
Heather Janiszewski Goodin, PhD, RN, AHN-BC, CPN

Nurse leaders often know, almost instinctively, how to role model and teach with a caring presence in face-to-face meetings with nursing students and colleagues. However, with more and more educational interactions occurring in an online environment, nurse leaders are often challenged to replicate or represent the concept of caring in a virtual manner. Further, learners’ expectations for the use of latest technologies and online tools in their online interactions are now quite pervasive. It can be easy to get preoccupied with the technical aspects of preparing online experiences and pay less attention to the caring characteristics that are central to our nursing profession.

Through both synchronous and asynchronous interactions, digital caring approaches can be used to enhance the student teaching/learning experience within a given course and throughout an entire curriculum/program. Valuing time, organization, rigor, and mutual respect among nurse leaders and learners are key aspects to developing and supporting online learning opportunities.

The main objective of this poster presentation is to have nurse leaders reflect on how caring teaching strategies can be implemented in his/her online course, meeting, or program within the next academic year. A review of literature revealed best online holistic teaching practices within the tenets of the book “Watson’s Caring in the Digital World” among other recent publications. Each of the caritas processes were examined and applied to discover useful and perhaps innovative online teaching/facilitation approaches for today’s nurse leaders.

Complex demands of patient care and an overburdened healthcare system expose staff to undue stress. Feelings of the inability to care well for patients, lead to compassion fatigue, burnout and leaving the profession. Early recognition and interventions are key components in preventing compassion fatigue. Designated healing environments (Renewal Rooms) and self-care have been shown to reduce stress, prevent compassion fatigue, increase engagement and empower staff.

A Rest and Renew Room was created. A quiet place to go to restore and recharge. The space is self-guided. Staff choose between various modalities, with instructions and benefits of usage. Modalities include mediation CD’s and list of useful apps, music, journals, coloring books, light therapy, aromatherapy, massage chair and tools, yoga mats, and inspirational books. All staff have access to the room 24/7.

Staff and Administration verbalized the space as being valuable to the hospital. They reported having the tools to manage stress during the workday allowing them to provide better patient care. Likert scales for anxiety/stress showed an average 2-point decrease after using the room. The room is frequented over 350 times a month. Staff engagement scores rose from 91% to 94%.

At the heart of nursing is the understanding that when we create the right environment, nature can heal itself. The planetary health framework centers in nature connection and recognizes the impacts that humans have on the environment as well as the consequences that environmental damage has on human health.

Nursing as the most numerous and most trusted health profession in the world, nurses can co-create a healthier future by embracing action to promote planetary health. Planetary health is a field focused on the human health impacts of human-caused disruptions of Earth's natural systems. This presentation will provide an overview of planetary health and a summary of how planetary changes are affecting health. Speakers will share actionable opportunities for nurses to advance holistic solutions that advance equity and justice on the path to promoting planetary health.

Join us on this webinar to learn more about the emerging field of planetary health and how you can leverage your voice as a holistic nurse to promote a healthy and sustainable future.

Holistic Nurse Coaches are well equipped to use motivational interviewing to work with client change by inviting them to the dance floor, being willing for the client to set the tone, path and beat of their goal(s). More times than not, the original goal that clients set, is actually masking what may be a deeper issue that needs to be resolved prior to fundamental concerns. This may be mistaken as resistance. In the most recent research, we are encouraged to re-shift resistance into a new paradigm of thinking. Perhaps in lieu of seeing “resistance”, we can begin to explore and go deeper into what our clients hopes and goals truly need to be addressed, step by step; an entirely new magical dance.

Nurse Coaches, Your Help Is Needed!
AHNCC has launched the Nurse Coach Practice Analysis (NCPA) Survey today. We need all Nurse Coaches (regardless of whether or not you are certified) to participate.

Every voice is very important 😊

This survey is critical in increasing the recognition and visibility of the role and value of Nurse Coaching and is crucial to maintaining national accreditation, and having ANCC magnet recognition. The purpose of the NCPA Survey is to validate, to society and our stakeholders, the professional role and practices of a Nurse Coach. To illustrate and support the amazing work you do as Nurse Coaches. The survey is open from October 1-25.

All participants who completely finish the NC survey in it's entirety, including the demographics section will be entered into a random drawing for one of the items below:

  • 1 Free Registration to the 2022 Annual Conference in Albuquerque, NM June 6-11, 2021
  • 1 Free Optional Tour of a Hot Air Balloon Ride in Albuquerque, NM June 9 5:00 a.m.

  • $50 towards AHNA Shop Purchases (merchandise, books & education)
  • $50.00 Amazon gift card
  • $50.00 Amazon gift card

In addition, if you are AHNCC certified and completely finish the NC survey in it's entirety, including the demographics, you will receive a certificate for three (3) continuing competency hours (equivalent to 3 CE/contact hours) that can be used towards their recertification requirement.

We recognize that this survey takes time and is tedious BUT it is so very important to supporting and furthering the recognition, value, and visibility of what you do and the Nurse Coach role.

Information collected and validated through the survey, about the work you do, identifies and supports Nurse Coaches as essential health care providers in the evolving healthcare transformation movement.

Please take the time to participate. To begin the survey please click here for the AHNCC Nurse Coach Survey: http://survey.cnetnurse.com/s3/ahncc-nc. If you have any problems please click here: info@cnetnurse.com.
