Good afternoon,

Congratulations to 2019 Toledo Glass City tournament winner, Bob McCurdy.  Well done Bob.
  • Stat of the day: Last season, 3,652 home runs were hit in Triple-A baseball. This season, Triple-A switched to MLB baseballs and that number skyrocketed to 5,749(!!!). The balls definitely aren't juiced though.
We got the first question about the availability of 2019 baseball products this weekend.  Once again there will be no pre-orders.  The 2019 APBA GO file will be available at the end of November.  The 2019 season baseball cards and BBW CDs and files will be available in January 2020.  The timing is similar to past years.  Since it is only September 4th, we have not finalized the actual 2020 dates.

As in life things in APBA go in cycles. These things keep occurring.

Please read the product descriptions carefully.  A product delivered electronically is a file sent to you via email.  This means you have to check your email.  The day your credit card is charged is the same day that we will send you the email.

Secondly is that lineup and rosters are available as free downloads at our website. They are not included in your card order. Please remember this in the future.

Lastly we do customer support via emails to  [email protected].  We don't do it via Facebook and any other social media platforms

TOURNAMENT REPORT
REGIONAL TOURNAMENTS

The Toledo Glass City Tournament

Thirty-eight (38) teams started the day at the 5th annual Toledo Glass City APBA Baseball tournament (GCABT-V). The theme was no divisions winners. After a rugged nine (9) game set of division play, eight (8) teams advanced to the playoffs, which consisted of single games the first 2 rounds, and the best of three (3) games for the Championship.

After all was said and done, Bob McCurdy's 1982 Philadelphia Phillies beat Jeff Boeding and his 1934 New York Yankees, 2 games to 1. The Phillies lost the first 3-1, but rallied to win the 2nd game 3-2 in 13 innings and then take the final game, 8-4. Unfortunate for Bob, he had to leave right before the championship to attend to a prior commitment, so he enlisted friend Michael Hernandez, to manage his team. Bob had beaten Michael and his 1973 Atlanta Braves team 6-3 in the semi finals.

Teams were in either one of three 10-team divisions, or in a lone 8-team division. Nine (9) division games were played. The top two teams in each division moved onto the playoffs.

The teams were seeded as follows:

1. 1951 Brooklyn Dodgers 7-2 Mgr. Shawn Baier 2. 1963 Twins 7-2 Mgr. Darren Schulz 3. 1996 Rockies 6-3 Mgr. Zack Zavela 4. 1930 NY Giants 6-3 Mgr. Jeremy Smith 5. 1934 Yankees 7-2 Mgr. Jeff Boeding 6. 1982 Phillies 7-2 Mgr. Bob McCurdy 7. 1973 Braves 6-3 Mgr. Michael Hernandez 8. 1994 Indians 6-3 Mgr. Michael Coon

Quarterfinals
---------------

The #8-94 Indians scored early and often and held on and beat #1-51 Dodgers, 12-8.

The #5-34 Yankees ran by the #4-30 Giants with an easy 8-4 victory.

The #6-82 Phillies blew a 3 run lead in the bottom of the ninth against the #3-95 Rockies, but then recovered for a 10-9 win in 10 innings.

The #7-73 Braves got a 2 run HR mid way thru the game, and that was enough to defeat #2-63 Twins, 2-1.

The quarterfinals completed a sweep of all the top seeds losing in the first round.

Semifinals
------------

The #8-94 Indians bats went cold, and that was fine with the #5-34 Yankees, as they cruised the way into the finals with a 5-1 win.

In the other semi-final game, the #6-82 Phillies used a 5 run 8th inning to come from behind and beat the #7-73 Braves, 6-3.

Championship
----------------

Final Series  -  1934 Yankees (#5 Seed) vs. 1982 Phillies (#6 Seed)

Game 1

The 34 Yankees behind the masterful pitching of Lefty Gomez defeat the visiting 82 Phillies 3-1. Selkirk sparks the offense with a solo HR in the 4th and the Yanks add a pair of runs in the 6th on RBI hits off the bats of Lazzeri and Crosetti....and the Phillies rally in the ninth falls short....and the Yankees take the series opener.

Game 2  -  13 Innings

In an instant APBA classic the Phillies defeat the visiting Yankees 3-2 in a 13 inning epic battle.  The Phillies jump to a 1-0 lead on a Pete Rose HR....and add a second run on a run scoring 4-3 GO by Diaz as they jump to a 2-0 lead after 4.  But the Yankees strike for 2 to tie it in the top of the 7th as Chapman delivers a 2 run double to score Crosetti and Rolfe.  The game remains tied into the 12th as both teams squander scoring opportunities.  The Yankees put runners at first and second in the top of the 13th....and Ruth strides to the plate looking to deliver the deciding blow....but he rolls into a 5-4-3 DP to end the threat.  The Phillies immediately strike against the weak Yankee bullpen as DeJesus, Trillo, and Dernier hit singles to load the bases...the Yankees draw the infield in...and Lazzeri throws out DeJesus at the plate but Gary Mathews ends the classic with a SF9...and the Phillies tie the series at 1-1.  The deciding game will be played in the Bronx at Yankees Stadium!

Game 3

The visiting Phillies strike early and often as they downgrade (CY to DY) Red Ruffing in the 3rd as they take a commanding 6-0 lead after 4! The Yankees battle back as Bill Dickey hits a 3 run bomb to cut the lead in half....and they add another run in the 6th on a Red Rolfe RBI single....cutting the deficit to 6-4...but the Phillies tack on 2 insurance runs in the 8th and Ron Reed shuts down the Yankees in the 8th and 9th to give the 82 Phillies and Bob McCurdy the Toledo Glass City championship!

Some other notes:
--------------------

Seven (7) of the attendees were previous Regional Tournament C&D winners: Randy Egan, Dick Butler (twice), Shawn Baier, Jeff Boeding, Andy Rumple, Tucker McBride, and Aaron Radlinski. Darren Schulz is a previous APBA GO tourney winner, and Jeff Boeding finished 2nd in the first APBA GO State Tournament this year.

There were managers from 5 states, Illinois, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Missouri, and Ohio.

Finally, there were seven (7) Father/Son/Family attendees, with one, the Silvis's from Pennsylvania, a father/mother/son attendee. Ron called the Silvis's the "First Family of APBA". You will see them at most of the tournaments.

Finally, instead of supplying door prizes, and prizes for the higher finishers, all leftover monies, which amounted to $255, were donated to the ALS Association in honor of Larry and Lisa Walker.

Date of the 2020 Glass City APBA Baseball Tournament is scheduled for  August 29th.

Congratulations and a big thank you goes out to Tournament Director Ron Emch for running another great tournament and large contribution to the ALS Foundation. And congratulations to Bob McCurdy and his 1982 Philadelphia Phillies on their Championship.

APBA LEAGUE INFORMATION

I am pleased to report that this column continues to assist leagues in finding new managers and pairing individuals looking for leagues.  I will be glad to run your league opening, if you contact me at  [email protected] with a brief and concise write-up.  Openings or individuals looking to join leagues are as follows:

September 1st Opening

AABL League Opening - The AABL, a 16 team basic game (with modifications) mail league in its 16th year, is looking to replace a manager who had to resign suddenly for personal reasons.  The open team has some nice buiding blocks like Josh Bell, Charlie Blackmon, and Mike Moustakas...but could use some help on the pitching staff.  With the current season almost over (ends in September) it is likely that the new manager won't have to do anything except play with the roster heading into the winter and the 2020 draft.  If interested please contact Andy at  [email protected].

August 18th Opening

OAPBA (Orlando APBA Assn) Opening - The OAPBA is seeking one or two new managers to expand the five-team league in 2020.  The league ( www.oapba.org) has been in existence since 1988 and is one of the longest-running leagues in the U.S.  It's face-to-face, Master Game, with some minor adjustments.  Thirty-three (33) player rosters with a pool of 30 players active and a three-play "farm system" (inactive, basically a futures list).  Detailed records for the entire lifetime of the league.  One needs to be knowledgeable about MLB and baseball strategy and APBA.  Contact Rod Caborn at  [email protected] or Dave Larson at [email protected] if interested.

August 11th Opening

Central New Jersey League Opening -  The 16 team face to face APBA league is based in the Philadelphia/South and Central New Jersey area and has been in existence for over 40 years.  This is a face to face league although league play using Computer rolling is also permissible.  The league plays a 162 game schedule and begins when the cards come out and ends the regular season by October 15th.  Anyone interested please contact Ed Dress at  [email protected]

August 4th Openings

ART League Opening - ART ( Almost the Real Thing League) is a 24-team BBW computer league looking for 3 (Brahmins, Compromise and Winos) dedicated managers.  The league follows the majority of MLB rules.  Each roster has 40 man ML and MI rosters.  Players follow option rules, teams work within budget guidelines ( based on wins), drafts for International FA, "First Year" draft, Rule V, and Free Agency.  The league has been in existence for 15+ years and all three franchise are either currently competitive or built for success long term.  If you are looking for a year round commitment with a fun group, you will enjoy what this league has to offer and they would love to have you join them.  If interested, contact Lanny at " [email protected]".

July 28th Openings

TSL League Opening - The TSL has a great opportunity for a new manager.  They are a 12-team draft league, currently at the halfway point of their 2019 season.  They are a cards and dice league, playing the basic game with only the most commonly used modifications (things like the optional fielding rules).  Don't miss this chance to join a league with 40+ years of history!  If interested, please contact Dan Spangler at  [email protected].

July 14th Openings

TSL League Opening - The TSL has a great opportunity for a new manager.  They are a 12-team draft league, currently at the halfway point of their 2019 season.  They are a cards and dice league, playing the basic game with only the most commonly used modifications (things like the optional fielding rules).  Don't miss this chance to join a league with 40+ years of history!  If interested, please contact Dan Spangler at  [email protected].

APBA Science Press Plus (S.P.P.) League Opening - The APBA S.P.P. League has an upcoming managerial openings. They are based in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and have existed over 40 years.  The league is looking to add at least two new teams for the upcoming season. This is a face to face league although league play using Skype is also permissible.  The league plays a 160 game schedule and begins when the cards come out and ends the regular season by Oct. 15th.  Anyone interested please contact John at  [email protected].

June 9th Openings

LABL League Openings - Ken Schulz is considering a restart of an existing cards and dice league but using APBA Go.  There are potentially up to 6 open spots with pre-existing rosters that have some very big names from the 2002 season.  This league would be an 84 game schedule, 2 divisions (1 AL only and 1 NL only), and a small draft prior to the start.  If you would be interested in competing in a league using APBA GO Collections to compile stats, please contact Ken at  [email protected].

May 19th Openings

KPML League Opening - The KPML has a current managerial opening.  The AIM BBW league is currently playing the 2015 season.  If interested, please contact Gene at [email protected].

UAL Opening - The UAL is an APBA Basic League with optional fielding looking for two managers.  The league has been in existence since 2004 and has 24 teams.  The league applies controls on player usage and a salary cap using actual MLB player salaries for the applicable season.  The 2019 UAL Draft (2018 season) draft is in July and will use the 2018 season (30 cards; No XC's).  The season runs from October through March with April playoffs.  That's about 15 home games a month and the sending of instructions for another 15 road games.  If interested or questions on the league, please contact Larry Wilson at [email protected] for further information.

April 22nd Openings

The General Manager's Baseball League (GMBL) - The GMBL has an immediate opening for a new owner.
THE GMBL is a BBW 5.75 league, and is one of the most challenging APBA franchise/replay league around.  The GMBL is comprised of 28 teams each with 40 man MLB roster and 20 man MiLB roster.  To succeed in GMBL, one must draft and develop talent from the minor leagues, just like real MLB GM's.  Since they are a 28 team league, almost all players on the disk are actually used and play - giving value to those real-life defensive subs and pinch-runners that seldom factor into replay leagues.

The league also has a very rich historical statistics database (founded in 2008), and uses a custom built web draft program to handle their annual drafts.  The open team has some very good young MLB and MiLK talent, including Rougned Odor, Byron Buxton, Nomar Mazara, Eloy Jimenez, AJ Puk, Forrest Whitley, and more.
