The German PATRIOT Office in Huntsville
|
|
By Tine Hoffmeister, Executive Director, AGP
I met up with German Air Force Lieutenant Colonel (Oberstleutnant) Ulrich Schmidt from the German PATRIOT Office in Huntsville, AL. Like many others, I was not aware that there were members of the German Air Force (Luftwaffe) stationed in Huntsville; this is something Schmidt hears often when he is out in uniform.
Lt. Col. Schmidt took over as director two years ago to serve a three year assignment at the German PATRIOT office located in Huntsville. Schmidt joined the German Air Force in 1986, and received his master's degree in electrical engineering. He went on to join the German Air Force Air Defense, specializing in the Patriot system as well as Missile Defense. Schmidt received his training in El Paso, Texas, in ground-based air defense, and later attended the US Air Force Air University in Montgomery, AL.
The German Air Force has been stationed in Huntsville since 1958 for training in the area of Air Defense & Missile Defense. Later on, the German Air Force established an Air Defense School in El Paso,TX. The German Patriot Office was establish in 1986. In the same time frame, the German Air Force took the PATRIOT air defense system into service; it has since become the backbone of the German Air Defense.
The German PATRIOT office in Huntsville functions as the German liaison office between relevant US and German organizations, which are responsible for PATRIOT. The office is a German Air Force military organization affiliated to the Redstone Arsenal.
Lt. Col. Schmidt and his family are enjoying their stay in Alabama, and especially enjoy the Southern hospitality. In return, on October 3rd, the German PATRIOT office will show their hospitality by celebrating German Unity Day with their allies, friends of the international PATRIOT community, and other invited guests.

|
|
By Made in Alabama
The Alabama Department of Commerce has opened a business development office in Stuttgart, Germany, to enhance the state's strategic efforts to attract European companies considering job-creating investments in the U.S., Governor Kay Ivey announced last month.
Christoph Dörr, an experienced German businessman who spent seven years in charge of an industrial operation in Alabama, serves as the director of the state's new European office, which began operating earlier this month.
Dörr's job will be to build on Alabama's long-standing economic development activities in Europe. In 2018 alone, European companies announced projects in Alabama involving nearly $1.5 billion in new capital investment and 1,500 jobs, according to data from the Alabama Department of Commerce.

Getting to know Dresden
|
|
by Peggy Boynton, German teacher at James Clemens High School
Hi, my name is Peggy Boynton, and I am a German teacher at James Clemens High School in Madison, Alabama. In July 2019, I was awarded the opportunity to be a participant in a 2-week long educator workshop hosted by the Goethe-Institut called "Sprache, Landeskunde und kulturelles Lernen in Dresden." I had only briefly visited Dresden in the late 90s, so I was thrilled at thought of having this span of time to dig deeper into the heart of Saxony, and here are a few of the things that I learned this area of Germany.
Many goods are made in and around Dresden! I visited the
Meißen manufactory just outside of Dresden, where extremely luxurious porcelain is made. I spent time in an artisan shop called
Ratags Holzdesign that specializes in those delicately detailed decor pieces famously made in Saxony such as Weihnachtspyramiden, Räuchermänner, and Schwibbogen. I so went into the shop of the 139-year-old dairy company,
Pfund, which is known as the "Most Beautiful Dairy in the World." It's the shop itself, not the cows, that holds a world record for beauty, I came to find out.
With one foot in the past, I set another one into the future and saw the
Gläserne Manufaktur, where Volkswagen is producing e-Golfs on view for the public and discussing ways to produce goods with a lighter impact on the planet.

AGP Stammtisch
|
|
Join us for our monthly AGP "Stammtisch":
Tuesday, October 1
5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Brät Brot, Birmingham
This will not be your typical Stammtisch as we will start a little earlier to help Brät Brot kickoff their five day Oktoberfest. Join us at 5:30 p.m. for t
apping of the Keg with Tom Soehn, Head Coach of Legion (Birmingham's professional soccer team). Join us when you can!
What does "Stammtisch" mean? A Stammtisch is an informal group meeting held on a regular basis, and also the usually large table around which the group meets. A Stammtisch is not a structured meeting, but rather a friendly and casual get-together.
This is a great opportunity for German expats to meet and for other German speaking/practicing to improve your German. Speaking German is encouraged but not required. We meet every first Tuesday of the month.
