"A Gift of Love
I Corinthians 13
This Sunday we
'll be exploring love as we prepare to light the second candle of Advent. As wonderful as that sounds, many of us have been dealing with things around us that feel like anything but centered on love. I realized again this week that love is a verb as in, to love. It's an action we take. Love is also a noun. It is something tangible, something we hold and then can give. Love is hard, especially the kind of love we find in scripture. Is our love really patient and kind? Is it really humble instead of being arrogant or rude? Does love really never fail? We are surrounded by situations that seem to draw love away from us; things like the political climate, Standing Rock, Aleppo, a homeless shelter for men in Bellevue. But then came the Facebook post early last week. It attacked us as a church. Not the United Methodist Church as a whole, but us right here at Aldersgate United Methodist Church. And it was an attack. So what does love tell us to do with any of this?
It would be so easy to ignore these things; and easy to respond with fear, anger, even hate. But that
's not our call as Christians; as followers of Jesus. The challenge is that in order to love (as in the verb) we have to have love, even be filled with love (as in the noun). Only out of that can we offer it. So we'll explore love on Sunday. And like last week we will have some time in silence to think, to pray, to decide what to do with the love we've been given by a God who most certainly offers love (noun) and who loves us (verb). Again, the question is, how will we respond? To prepare let's go back to the words of Paul in I Corinthians 13 as we prepare for this second Sunday of Advent.
We are doing a special end of year pledge drive for AUMC in December! Please expect to hear more on this topic from the Core Leaders Team! Please be on the look out for special pledge cards that we need returned ASAP. Also, we are asking for a special gift of a "13th month" for 2016. This extra gift will help us finish in the black in 2016 as well as help with the kitchen.
