"Realizations in the Holy Land"

"Living Water -
Remembering Our Baptism"

Scripture Lesson
Luke 3:1-6, 3:21-23a

This Sunday
Last week I began a study of my realizations from the Holy Land.  This Sunday I'll be getting much more specific.  We often forget that Jesus lived thirty years before he began his ministry.  Let's remember that the age of thirty in those times was considered old; at the very least well-seasoned, and mature.  The life expectancy rate then was somewhere between 25 - 40, particularly in the regions frequented by Jesus.  Today the life expectancy ranges from 65 - 90, depending on the region.  So, according to people of the time, Jesus was not young.  He started his career toward the end of his life.  Once his ministry began, it lasted either one or three years depending on which gospel you read.  But why did it begin?  Where did it begin?  The final one to three years seem to be different than those that preceded.  What happened?  That's what I want to explore this Sunday.
Baptisms are rites of passage in most Christian churches.  In the United Methodist Church we believe that infants can be baptized, welcomed into the Church and nurtured into faith.  In the time of Jesus, it wasn 't about being welcomed into a church.  It was about starting anew; about repenting and dying to the past in order to live for the future.  The baptism of Jesus has the potential to be so much more than what we expect.  So to prepare please read Luke 3:1 - 6 & 21-23.  And just a warning...we're all going to get a little wet this Sunday.
