Sermon
"Misfits, Castoffs, and Runaways: The Family Crucible"

Scripture
Romans 5:1-5 and John 16:12-15

"Always remember that you are absolutely unique. Just like everyone else." This is a great quote from Margaret Meade. There's a seeming conundrum there, but ultimately I don't think there is. Of course we are each unique-if not we would be shapeless blobs undifferentiated from the Primordial Goo. And of course it is our very uniqueness that gives us something in common.

As we continue Pastor Brad's series on the family this week, I'll be exploring difference in the context of family. We'll hear from Andrew Solomon, author of "Far from the Tree: Parents, Children, and the Search for Identity" who puts it wonderfully: "There is no such thing as reproduction. When two people decide to have a baby, they engage in an act of production.  "Something new is created in every new birth-a complete original. Mr. Solomon says that "encountering unexpected traits in one's child is a universal part of parenthood" and we'll explore what that means in the face of God's call to each of us to fulfill our unique role in the world.

It all starts with family-and it continues in the family of Aldersgate!

I'll see you  Sunday, Pastor Laura

Faith @ Home - Praying in Color
Prayer is an important part of our Christian journey, but sometimes it can be hard to do.  Try out a different kind of way of praying by Praying in Color.  This is a great way to pray together as a family and to allow your minds, hearts and bodies into the prayer.   Click here for the Praying in Color handout, or find it at church in the narthex.

VBS Volunteers
Sign up today to volunteer at VBS - the funnest week of the year!  As a church we get to come together to Worship, share our faith, and experience God's love with a great group of kids and you don't want to miss out on it!   We need a few more guides, station leaders and helpers, as well as some pre-VBS workers to help with decorations and other prep work. If your can help, contact Jen Hoerber.

Jars Needed
We need plastic jars with lids for a Vacation Bible School project.  We need  pint or quart size, such as a mayonnaise jar or a peanut butter jar. Give them to Linda Detering or Jen Hoerber.    Thank you.

Employment Opportunity
Aldersgate Christian Preschool has several openings for the 2016-2017 school year from September through June.   The openings are for Preschool Teacher, Assistant Teacher, Classroom Aide and Substitutes.  Applicants should possess education and experience working in Early Childhood Education with the ability to provide sound academic and social opportunities at an age appropriate level.   Applications are available in the Preschool Office located on the lower level of the church facility.  Interested applicants should call the preschool 425-562-0433.   ACP is a Christian preschool operated as an extension of the Christian Education Program of the Aldersgate United Methodist Church.  We are located on the spacious campus afforded us by the church.  Our staff includes dedicated teachers with extensive professional training and experience.

We have had a wonderful response to the Family Mission Trip to Lazy F.  If you have registered you will be receiving health forms to fill out soon.  If you haven't registered and you plan to attend please let Colleen Olleman know ASAP.  We are filling up fast.   It will be a wonderful weekend of work, fun and fellowship as we grow to together in service.   If you are unable to attend, please be a part of the mission by bringing clothes for the Ellensburg clothing bank to church, by donating craft supplies for the Craft Cabin, and by supporting those at Lazy F in prayer.  CLICK HERE for the registration form. Fill out the form (the Skyline Lodge is FULL), write a check to AUMC (write Mini-Mission on the notation line), and give the registration form and check to Gwen Pazan (she has a church mailbox).

Clothing Drive for Ellensburg UMC
As part of our Lazy F Mini-Mission Trip, a crew will work at the Ellensburg Clothing Center run by the Ellensburg United Methodist Church.  Please share with those in need by donating new and gently used, clean clothing.  They have a particular need for kid's jeans and shorts size 5-12 and also summer clothing for adults, though any clothing will be gratefully accepted.   There is a collection bin by the church office.

Craft & Program Supplies Need for Lazy F
As part of our Lazy F Mini-Mission Trip, we are collecting craft and program supplies for the camp.  Click here for a complete list of the supplies needed.  Supplies will be collected through June.

Congregations for the Homeless
Meals need June 5th to June 11th
Each June Aldersgate supports Congregations for the Homeless by providing a week's worth of dinners and lunches for the men who will be staying at Christ the King Lutheran Church during the month.   This  year our week is Sunday June 5th through Saturday June 11th except Monday June 6th  (dinner is being provided by another group that night).   Look for the sign up sheets in the Narthex.  This is an excellent opportunity to work with others in the church.  The guidelines are:
Dinner Instructions
Bring dinner for 35 men which includes:
  • Entrée (hot dish)
  • Bread
  • Salad and/or Vegetable (men request vegetables a lot)
  • Dessert (could be fruit, but they prefer a real dessert J)
  • Drinks: 1-2 gallons of milk, 1 large container of juice (anything but orange juice)
When to Arrive and What to Do
Please arrive between 6:30-6:45pm (The church will open to the men at 7:00pm).    Arrive earlier if you need to heat up your food or need additional preparations.   Go to the second level (lower parking lot).   Please plan to have at least two people stay to serve the meal from 7:00pm until around 7:45pm .   We will serve until 7:45pm and then seconds will be served if there is  enough left over.  We will continue serving until 8:00pm, and then put away the food and leave.  The men will do the clean up.  Please bring your food in either disposable containers or easily transferable containers, so that if you have to leave, you can leave your food at the church.

Foodbank 5000 Item Challenge
The challenge continues.  Learning about Jesus miraculously feeding 5,000 people with 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish (Matt. 14:13-21), the Sunday School kids challenged the church to donate 5,000 food items to the food bank. Please bring in items for the food bank and color in a smiley face on the chart for each item you donate.  Thank you for helping our Sunday Schoolers promote their desire to serve.
