This Sunday
This is not just a communion Sunday, it is World Communion Sunday, a Sunday set apart to remember that we are not alone. We gather with millions across the globe to remember Jesus and his last meal with his disciples. We gather to remember the words, the actions, the teachings, the values, and the sacrifice which he took upon himself for others. In as much as our table may appear small, once added to the multitudes of sisters and brothers across the planet, the table becomes indescribably large. To help us experience pieces of that, it is my hope is to create any number of tables in the shape of jigsaw puzzle pieces, that once together help us understanding that we belong; and particularly that we belong to one body. There will be tables scattered around the sanctuary, each holding some kind of significance. Each table will have both bread and cup, but in small quantities. Each table will be representative of a piece of the global community, and once gathered together will represent One Body where, with all the elements combined into one loaf and one cup, we become united by the grace of God. The potential power of a healthy church is in their intentional ability to bring together, like Jesus did, a wide array of populations, interpretations, understandings, all accepting one another. Then it is to move that Body toward a place of belonging, where, from there, each person, once filled, goes out and responds to the call of God with and for others. It is our mandate. To prepare please read Genesis 1:27 & 31.

World Communion Sunday
Sunday, October 7
We will take a special offering on World Communion Sunday, October 7.  Your gift matters!  Gifts fund graduate racial-ethnic World Communion Scholarships, with at least one-half of the annual amount reserved for ministries beyond the United States.  Donations also provide for undergraduate U.S. Ethnic Scholarship and Ethnic In-Service Training programs.  The World Communion Sunday offering empowers a diverse mix of national and international ethnic students.  Thank you for your generous gift!

Finance Update & Budget
There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens. Ecclesiastes 3:1
For me, this verse describes the transition not only from Summer to Autumn but the various transitions that are happening with our church finances. 

First of all, we welcome Jill Swanson as our new Treasurer and we thank Marie Vieth for her years of service. Jill is also the Treasurer for the Aldersgate Christian PreSchool. She can be reached at 

Second, Melinda Lilley is moving out of the Finance Chair position into a Communications role. Jim Phillips has graciously accepted the finance team leadership role. He can be reached at

Third, the Aldersgate July 2018-June 2019 Fiscal Budget that was approved by the Core Leadership Team is now available to view. Please click here to download or ask for a copy from Wendi in the office.  We went from a previous fiscal budget of $511,547.05 to the current fiscal budget of $463,613.21 (about $50,000 less). Needless to say, we were forced to cut some maintenance and other needed services in order to achieve a balanced budget. If you have any questions, please contact: melindalilley@me.com.
A quarterly update with the status of our income and expenses will be available shortly. Your continued faithful giving is appreciated.

Finally, I'd like to thank the members of the Finance Team that I've had the pleasure of working with over the last years, especially Jim Phillips, Darrell Lowe, Brad Brewer, and Gary Swearingen. Thank you for serving our community.

Mod Fundraiser
Thank you to everyone who came out to support the youth by dining at Mod Pizza last week. It was awesome to see the Aldersgate family out in full force all throughout the day! We are excited to announce that we raised $290.62. We were also graciously given an additional $33 from those who couldn't make it to Mod for a total of $323.62. A BIG Thank you from Aldersgate's Youth!
S lide Help Needed
Moving in to the fall, Pastor Laura would like to work with a few other people on designing and organizing the slides for first service worship. The process usually only takes 1-2 hours a week and is a lot of fun for creative, technology-oriented people. Please contact Pastor Laura if you are interested, willing to learn the process, and can help as part of a team with this important work for the church. 
Update on The Way Forward  and General Conference 2019
Please find attached three documents that may be helpful as background to the conversations we will have throughout this fall about inclusion, welcoming, and belonging in the church. Please review these documents as we move toward General Conference in February, 2019. The committee designing a process for Aldersgate to Consider becoming a Reconciling Congregation (CRC) is planning an evening informational session to share more about what has brought United Methodists to the point of a special General Conference and what it may mean for the future on  Monday, October 22 at 7pm. Please mark your calendars and bring your questions.

Calling Crafters/Artists
As you exercise your creative side this fall, please consider making additional hand-crafted items or art work to donate to the United Methodist Women for their annual bake/craft sale, December 8-9 . Membership Roll 
It is time to update the church membership rolls. Every year Betty Fredeen, our Membership Secretary, reviews the church membership and mails out letters to members who, according to our records, have not attended Aldersgate or contributed in the last two years. The purpose of the letter is not to push people away but to let them know we are interested in them, to see if they want to remain members, and to keep our membership records accurate. We need your help. The members listed below did not respond to our letter or the letter was returned by the U.S. Postal Service as undeliverable. If you know them, please encourage them to reply to the letter or contact the church office. If you have any information about them, (current contact information, did they moved away, are they attending another church, etc.), please notify Betty Fredeen (425-746-5113) or the church office.
 
These people were mailed two letters over the last two years. They will be removed from membership at the 2018 Charge Conference unless we hear from them.

Bell Petting Zoo
Sunday, October 7
Calling all kids and youth from 3rd grade to 12th grade (and adults too)! Have you ever wondered what bells were all about? Come to the Bell Petting Zoo on Sunday, October 7 from 4:45pm-5:15pm in the Sanctuary. You can learn how to ring and learn what all you can do with a bell and a chime. If you are interested in joining a kids bell choir or youth bell choir, please come and try out a bell and a chime or two.  You don't have to know how to read music or have any music experience.  Stop by and see what all the fun is about!  Questions?  Please contact Pam Johnson at pojo28@gmail.com or (206) 200-8254.
Church Rummage Sale
Friday & Saturday, October 12 & 13
SAVE the DATES!  This year's Rummage Sale is  Friday and Saturday, October 12-13.   As they say, one man's junk is another man's treasure, so n ow is the time to clean out your cupboards, closets, book shelves, garage and attic and donate your treasures to the church.   We will receive your donations  Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday,  October 9-11 .  Also please donate shopping bags, especially paper bags.  Of course, we need a variety of volunteers to pick up, sort and price items, cashier, cleanup, deliver and just lend a hand as needed so please sign up on Sunday!    Your support of the  Rummage Sale, whether volunteering,  donating items or buying items, raises funds for mission trips!  Last year's Rummage Sale funds helped to  pay for our youth to go on their mission trip this summer.  Contact is Linda Detering.
Fall Festival
October 26, 5:30-7:30pm
The crisp air, the turning leaves and the arrival of pumpkin spice all let us know Fall is here which means it's time for the Fall Festival!  Mark your calendars for  Friday, October 26th from 5:30-7:30 for this popular fall family event.  The Fall Festival will again have a chili and hot dog dinner, carnival games, cookie decorating, a costume parade and fun for all!  

We, of course, are looking for volunteers to help with this event.  Please contact Jen Hoerber or sign up  on Sunday's attendance form for one of the following; Revamping/creating carnival games (are you crafty or have the ability to cut wood?  If so, we could use your help!), Cooking (all the chilli and sides will be prepped and cooked the week of the event at church), Or help the day of the event  Friday, October 26th with Set-up from 11-5, Manning a booth (Shifts  5:30-6:30 and/or  6:30-7:30), and Clean Up from  7:30-8:30.  Thank you in advance for all of your support for this important and fun community outreach event!  
Stop the Bleed!
Monday, October 29
Injuries often can be repaired if the victim does not bleed out. 
The number of deaths in large disasters or even in home accidents can be reduced if someone is trained to stop the bleeding. Evergreen Hospital has volunteer instructors who will teach a class at Aldersgate in how to stop bleeding properly for all types of injuries, and for all age groups from infants through the elderly.  The class is on Monday, October 29 from  6:30-8:30pm   If you will attend, please sign up or contact Dorothy Bennett.

Saturday, November 3
Mark your Calendars!   We hope you can join us on Saturday, November 3, from 4:30 - 6:30pm for this Pampered Chef/AUMC "Food Channel" Demo & Tasting event to raise funds to pay off our loan payment for the kitchen remodel. Leading the event will be Malia Hampson, new Pampered Chef consultant and Peter Narmita, Aldersgate's "chef for the day."  This will be both an on-site as well as an on-line fundraiser party. Youth Group (6th-12th Grade)

Habitat for Humanity Build
Thursdays & Saturdays, October 4, 6,11,13
It's fall and time for the Habitat for Humanity Interfaith Build.  This is your chance to do something about housing the homeless.  Habitat is building homes on the Sammamish Plateau and has set aside a block of time for the Interfaith Community.  The dates are  October 4, 6, 11, and 13.  Habitat is hoping for up to 15 volunteers each  Thursday and  Saturday.  If you are interested please sign up  on Sunday's   
attendance form or at www.habitatskc.org/faith.  Contact Darrell Lowe for more information.
 
This is also the time to help Habitat financially.  The houses are sold at cost the those in need.  Our contributions allow Habitat to find new land and to start new homes.  Mark your contributions for Habitat and place them in the offering plate.
Statewide Ballot Initiatives Explained at Aldersgate 
Saturday, October 6, 3:00pm
Aldersgate UMC and the League of Women Voters are partnering again this fall to host an Initiative Forum like the Candidate Forum that we hosted over the summer. It's a great time to learn more about each initiative and who supports and who opposes them. The exact format of the event is still being finalized, but doors will open at  2:30pm  and the event will start at  3:00pm . League speakers and materials will help make sense of the language that you will see on your ballots about the four statewide initiatives this fall. See Pastor Laura with questions or to sign up to bring snacks that we can offer as a gesture of welcome to our guests for this event.
The Face of Felons: Beyond the Label
Thursday, October 18 
Strengthen your community and challenge your perceptions through an evening of stories and conversations with the formerly incarcerated. Join us on Thursday, October 18, from 7:00-8:30pm in Friendship Hall. Doors open at 6:45pm and the program begins promptly at 7:00pm. Parenting Forum: Raising children in a World of Deep Divides

Bellevue First United Methodist Church
The goal of the 'Parenting Forum: Raising Children in a World of Deep Divides is to provide parents helpful resources from knowledgeable presenters on a variety of relevant topics.  This forum is open to the public and geared for parents with children of all ages.  The day will consist of phenomenal key note speakers, morning and afternoon breakout sessions covering an array of topics, and close with a panel discussion.  The forum will be held at Bellevue First UMC and will run from  10am - 3pm (doors open at  9:30) and lunch will be catered.  Registration can be done online at  https://www.parenting-forum-tickets.eventbrite.com.  The $15 registration fee includes lunch.  For more information visit our Facebook page:  https://www.facebook.com/ParentingForumBellevue/

Warm Socks Needed
School has started and rains have returned!  The need for warm socks touches everyone, especially the homeless.  Please leave new socks in the basket across from the office.  They will be delivered to Congregations for the Homeless, Griffin House, Mary's Place, Operation Nightwatch and Sophia Way.   Griffin House may be new to many in our congregation.  Located in Renton, Griffin House serves homeless boys.  Imagine what a pair of socks in Seahawks colors would mean to its new owner!


The Sophia Way Lunch
Thursday, October 11
It is time for the annual Sophia Way Lunch.  It will be held at the Meydenbauer Center on Thursday, October 11 at noon.  The event is free but there will be a request for a donation.  There will be a keynote speaker and an update from the director as well as stories from the clients.
