Series
"It's All in the Family"

Sermon
"The Church as Family"

Scripture
Luke 5:17-31

This Sunday we examine part two of this ten week series on family.  This week it's all about the church.  As we examine the communion table we have to remember that the group gathered at that last supper with Jesus was much like many of our families.  He had fisherman who hardly ever darkened the door of the synagogue (church service); zealots who believed that it was their right to take whatever means necessary, including violence, to rid the region of Roman occupation; criminals in the form of a tax collector whose previous life represented the worst kind of manipulation of "faith;" older followers and younger followers; Jerusalem Jews and Galilean Jews both of whom really couldn't stand each other; those who saw themselves as failures, those who were self-centered and those who centered themselves on what Jesus was seeking to bring.  It doesn't get a whole lot more open than that.  Those were the disciples chosen by Jesus.  In many ways, they were the first congregational family.   In as much as they had their moments of disfunction, they remained steadfast, grew in faith and focus, in the love they carried for each other centered on Jesus.  Isn't that what a family of faith should be?  Let's explore that this Sunday.  To prepare please read Luke 5:17-31.

News From Lay Leadership Team
We have been made aware of openings on the following ministry teams or church positions.   Please contact Rick Wilson or the ministry team leaders if you are interested in any of these areas of service.
  • The Board of Trustees need a team secretary to be responsible for recording and publishing minutes/decisions made by the team.  Rich Detering leads the  Trustees.
  • We are still in need of a Safety Officer who is responsible for determining if the church is in compliance with Conference Safe Church requirements.
From the Nursery
We are pleased to welcome Judy Wallace as our new nursery coordinator.  She comes to us with years of experience in childcare and even recently started subbing at Aldersgate Christian Preschool.   Her warm smile and genuine, caring personality will welcome both the children and their parents each Sunday morning.  Welcome Judy!   In addition, the nursery also has three youth to assist on Sunday mornings.  Ryan Breske has been serving as a nursery attendant for years.  Fallon Fleishman and Jacob Yormark have recently started as junior youth attendants.

Teachers Needed!
Sunday School teachers are needed from now through June.  To be able to grow our program, we need to have people willing to teach.  If you are interested, speak with  Jen Hoerber.  Jen can help you ease into these opportunities to serve our kids and can even pair you up with someone to start.

VBS Planning Meeting

Join us on May 19, from 6:00-8:00pm for a Vacation Bible School planning meeting and help us as we get ready for a wonderful week of exploring God's love in the depths of dark caves where The Light of the Lord will light up our world!  VBS is July 25-28 with a VBS Sunday celebration on July 31 !  Many volunteers will be needed that week, please sign up to help!

Calling All Graduates!
Deadline May 22
We will celebrate Aldersgate's graduating seniors (high school and college) during worship on June 5th .  Please send us a picture along with a description of their accomplishments, the name of the school they are graduating from, and their future plans to Jen Hoerbe by May 22  so they can each be highlighted in a special bulletin insert.

Altar Flowers Needed
Alar flowers are a lovely way to commemorate a special person or a special event with your dedication appearing in the bulletin. Please sign up to provide flowers in May and July.  The Flower Committee will provide a flower arrangement for your donation of $35 or you may provide your own arrangement with flowers from your backyard..  Sign up on the Flower Calendar located on the bulletin board by the church office.

Aldersgate's Flower Committee has been arranging flowers for the sanctuary since January, 2003. People who sign up to "sponsor" flowers pay $35 and are invited to take the arrangement home with them after the Second Service. The price has remained the same since the beginning!   A small profit is realized with each "sponsored" arrangement.  Through the years, this money has been used for various charitable projects and church items.  These include Pastor's Discretionary Fund, Kitchen Fund, Library Support, additional hymn books, tables and pedestals for the sanctuary, ushers' cabinet and flowers for special occasions and for shut-ins.  The Flower Committee consists of Renee Kroese, Linda Detering and Norma Line. We thank you for your support and we  hope you continue to enjoy the flowers we provide.

Clothing Drive for Ellensburg UMC
As part of our Lazy F Mini-Mission Trip, a crew will work at the Ellensburg Clothing Center run by the Ellensburg United Methodist Church.  Please share with those in need by donating new and gently used, clean clothing.  They have a particular need for kid's jeans and shorts size 5-12 and also summer clothing for adults, though any clothing will be gratefully accepted.   Start cleaning out your closets now and look for a clothing collection bin in the narthex next month.

Foodbank 5000 Item Challenge
As the children explore the story of Jesus feeding the 5000, we discussed how when we donate food to the food bank our little bit of food helps to feed many.  Our Sunday schoolers then decided that if Jesus could feed 5000, we could all come together and bring in 5000 food items for the food bank.  They want to chart the progress on the smiley face chart we used to visualize what 5000 actually looks like which is hanging in the hallway by the food drive donation tub.  Please bring in items for the food bank and color in a smiley face for each item you donate.  Thank you for helping our SundaySchoolers promote their desire to serve.
