News for the Week of April 6, 2025 | | |
Dear Friends,
This Sunday is the last Sunday before we enter Holy Week, and on this Sunday we hear of Mary anointing Jesus for death with costly perfume, kneeling before him to anoint his feet. This is a lavish act of love and service.
In Lent we often give things up, fret over our flaws, then worry when we come to the end that we didn’t stick to our disciplines or pray enough. What if in the last days of Lent and during Holy Week we focused on lavishing love on Jesus by lavishing love on and serving those around us? What if we anointed others with kind words and actions? What if we lavished love on Jesus by standing with those who are facing fear and death . . . now?
There are always opportunities to love like this, in our personal, daily lives and in the world. Look for people nearby to anoint with your love; read the newsletter for opportunities in the larger community.
A special email went out yesterday about ways to stand with the disappeared and included a gathering tonight, the protest tomorrow, and preparing for a Palm Sunday Procession that speaks to our need to shout “Hosanna!” Or “Save Us!” in this time when the Powers and the Principalities have raised their heads.
See you in church!
Faithfully, Suzanne+

That your Faith may not Fail: Stand for the Disappeared
All Saints’ Episcopal Church: Living Holy Week
As we prepare to reenact that humble, jumbled, confusing Palm Sunday procession, we face a government striking fear into and threatening its citizens. We follow the humble Christ who lifts up the lowly, calls us “friend,” and honors the image of God in each of us. We who follow that One must speak up when the dignity of others is being violated.
If you are planning to join other All Saints folks at the Hands Off! Rally and March tomorrow, the meet-up will be at Daley Plaza, Picasso Statue at 11:30am. Learn more through the link and email Courtney if you are trying find the group:

Would you like to help out on the Building & Grounds Committee?
We have an interesting list of projects for 2025, including refurbishing the church bell, installing new windows in the basement, painting fences, and addressing replacement of the church school HVAC units. There’s no obligation to participate in any of the projects - it’s enough if you simply want to stay informed about the work we’re doing to keep the church campus intact. But there are definitely volunteer opportunities to paint, clean, recycle and otherwise help out as the weather warms up. Many hands make light work! Please contact Mark Ortlieb at MRO25@aol.com.
We’re getting close to Spring and the gardens are stirring!
The first gardening session will be THIS Sunday, April 6 at 12:00.
We’ll cut away old growth, weed a little, mulch, and plant a few cold-tolerant petunias.
The All Saints Garden Group tends the pollinator gardens at our 3-flat next door at 4546 Hermitage. We are always looking for new people to help out. If you’d like to stay informed, please email Mark Ortlieb at MRO25@aol.com to get on the Garden Group list. There's no obligation; you can volunteer to help out when and if convenient for you.

| SOCIAL JUSTICE & OUTREACH | | |
MEXICO OUTREACH CELEBRATION
Last Sunday, All Saints' was very pleased to have Bishop Joseph visit us to describe how our children's work with the Bake Auction benefits his congregations in Renk, Sudan. This is an example of how this church family works locally and reaches out to our community, the nation, and globally.
In a month, there will be another opportunity to meet another church leader whose work has been connected to us for nearly as long as we've known Bishop Joseph. On May 4th, we will celebrate our 16-year relationship with the ministries of Padre Bayron Chanchavac, a dynamic pastor from Cuernavaca, Mexico and longtime friend of members of our congregation. Join us to meet him during the 9am and 11am services and at a gathering coffee hour. There we will share food and drink, the likely demolition of a pinata at the hands of our children, and an opportunity to see how our work in Chicago reaches his growing parishes in Mexico.
Our outreach is known as Efecto Mariposa, the Butterfly Effect, the principle that a small change in one location can lead to a far greater change elsewhere. This year, we hope to raise $6000 to assist Bayron. He hopes to meet many of our congregation and, perhaps, his second Chicago Dog.

Troublemakers and United Power for Action and Justice Call to Action!
The Reclaiming Chicago campaign has made tremendous progress over the past year (did you see this coverage in the Tribune last week?) thanks to the All Saints Troublemakers and members of United Power for Action and Justice.
As the state legislative session wraps up, we are calling on All Saints members to write letters to our state electeds to include a $15M provision in the budget for affordable homebuyer subsidies that will help restore historically disinvested neighborhoods and build generational wealth on the South and West sides.
Over the month of April, we will organize easy letter writing drives that will culminate in a letter delivery action on May 4.
Thank you!
