Dear Friends,
On a lark, Tracey and I went to Winter’s Jazz Club last night to hear the Jeremy Kahn Trio with guest trumpeter Millie Ahearn. Winter’s Jazz Club is right on the river in McClurg Court. To walk along the river lit by a full October moon is gift enough, but it was followed by an hour of beautiful music.
The club wasn’t crowded on a Thursday night but the audience was rapt as the musicians played classics from Cole Porter and Billie Strayhorn: “Love for Sale,” “All of You,” “Lush Life,” and more. I love watching musicians, especially jazz musicians, play together. I suspect they’re having way more fun, all the time, than the rest of us! And last night was no exception.
The bandleader, pianist Jeremy Kahn, took delight in playing with his former student trumpeter Millie Ahearn, who played soulfully and sensitively. I love the way musicians watch each other for their cues, paying close attention to when to come in as accompaniment or for solos, when to play to highlight another musician’s playing, when to play for attention. It’s a beautiful ballet of subtle cues, careful attention, celebrating individual talent even as individuals are invited to the humility and magic of blending for the group.
All of this was made more lovely by the fact that Ahearn is a trans woman and the show was titled “Music by Porter and Strayhorn: Unforgettable Contributions to the Jazz Songbook from the Queer Community.” To see three older jazz men playing with a very young trans woman, all delighting in one another’s talent and musicianship, heightened the usual joy of live music.
There is beauty and joy all around us. All we have to do is look.

Dear Friends,
Last Sunday, a record 52,140 runners completed the Chicago Marathon. Spectators lined the streets in all 29 neighborhoods the course winds through, coming out to cheer on runners. There were creative signs: “Due to inflation you have to run 28.6 miles”, and “The rats don’t run this city, you do!”; and there were outlandish costumes - Bigfoot and a full tuxedo! One runner ran the entire race in high heeled shoes while raising money for a shelter that works with survivors of domestic violence, and Ruth Chepngetich set a new women’s record for the fastest marathon, finishing the whole race in just under two hours and ten minutes. Truly amazing!
Even though there is an electric buzz and excitement around the Chicago Marathon on the race day itself, the race day is but the culmination of months and months of training for runners. Yes, they completed the race that day, but for most of them, it began months and months back. In a similar way, Election Day is just the day where we cast our votes, but the lead up is determining a platform, campaigning, town halls, debates, and canvassing. For most of us, it’s not the day our decision is made, but simply when ballots go in the box and votes are counted.
For us at All Saints, our commitment and investment in this community, our spiritual home, keeps going long before and long after the month of the pledge drive. While there may not be thousands lining the street ringing cowbells, or offering high fives, pickle juice or bananas, we do come from a rich faith tradition where as Hebrews reminds us, there is a “great cloud of witnesses” which came before us in the life of faith.
As such, the dollar amount you are able to pledge in 2025 is an important milestone to culminate the many small things that you do for those around you in your pews and your groups over the year. During this opportunity for us to come together as part of a bigger church community, let’s finish the race strong!

Have you ever wondered where the Prayers of the People come from or why we use the prayers we use during that portion of our liturgy? If you have no idea what I am talking about, the Prayers of the People are the prayers we pray after we say the creed and before we exchange the sign of peace. They invite us to pray for our world, our church, our nation, our community, the sick, and the dead. The form for these prayers and many of the prayers we use come to us from the Book of Common Prayer.
During the season of Advent, we would like to shape the prayers to help us pray more purposefully for what is happening in our world and in our lives.
This is where you come in! Next Sunday, October 27, between the 9 and 11 o’clock services, we will meet in the reading room to take a look the scriptures for Advent and to begin to shape the prayers for the season.
No experience is required, just an open heart and a desire to help shape our prayer during this blessed season of anticipation!

Traditionally, we baptize children in January on the Feast of the Baptism of Our Lord, in late spring on the Feast of Pentecost, and in the fall on the Feast of All Saints. Adults are usually baptized at the Easter Vigil (the night before Easter Sunday).

Liturgical Ministry Training for All Saints Lectors and Intercessors

Whether you are inquiring, fairly new, or experienced as a lector or intercessor at Sunday Eucharist, you are invited to attend a 45 minute training in these liturgical ministries. The training will provide you with practical information and resources, as well as performance tips intended to help build competence and confidence for the proclamation of scripture and/or leading of the prayers.

Guest Expert: Krys Springer, MA, MDiv
We will welcome Krys Springer, MA, MDiv, as a guest expert at our October 21 meeting.. Krys works as a Bereavement Specialist at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. Prior to this role, she worked as a hospital chaplain for many years, most recently at Northwestern Medical Hospital. Krys completed a fellowship with the University of Chicago - McLean Center of Clinical Ethics and served as part of the Illinois POLST Committee. She is a strong proponent of Advance Care Planning and helping people identify their values as they are faced with health care decisions. If you have questions about end-of-life planning and bereavement, please join us for this conversation. We are grateful to Krys for sharing her expertise.

If you've tried volunteering in the past but were discouraged by full sign ups - please give us another shot!

RCS is also looking for volunteers who would like to join
the Tuesday Delivery Crew.
Every Tuesday between 12:30-2pm volunteers unload A LOT OF FOOD from pallets on the sidewalk to the Parish Hall for distribution. You should feel comfortable lifting 30-50 lbs and going up and down stairs. Those interested should reach out to Parker at parker@ravenswoodcommunityservices.org.

Any voter in Chicago can vote at any Early Voting site, no matter where they live in the city. Voters can choose whatever voting site is most convenient for them, including on Election Day.
All Early Voting locations are ADA-compliant and fully accessible to voters with disabilities.

The Investiture of Presiding Bishop-elect Sean Rowe
Join the church-wide virtual celebration on November 2
The church-wide virtual celebration of new ministry and investiture of Bishop Sean Rowe as Presiding Bishop and Primate of The Episcopal Church will take place on Saturday, November 2, beginning with a virtual "roll call" of dioceses at 8:30 am Central and a livestreamed Service of Holy Eucharist at 10 am Central.
The service will livestream on the event webpage as well as The Episcopal Church’s Facebook page.

We pray for the many lives lost, and encourage donations to our trusted partners at Episcopal Relief & Development, who will walk alongside those affected through all stages of this disaster and recovery.

Compassionate God, source of all comfort, we pray for the people whose lives have been devastated this hurricane season.

Changes for All Saints Parishioners texting through Breeze
Breeze, the Church's volunteering and donation tracking software, is now requiring a double opt-in before any texts are sent through the platform. This means that All Saints parishioners must indicate their desire to receive texts, as well as reply to an automated text with “YES” before any texts can be sent.
This new enrollment requirement will be rolled out starting next Wednesday, October 23. After that date, church members will receive the following message:
