Sustainability Through Antiques
For every purchase, a tree is planted
Greetings!
Happy Earth Month!

Antique Resources is proud to announce our partnership with One Tree Planted
to contribute to global reforestation efforts.

Our partnership operates on a simple yet impactful model: based on our sales, we allocate funds for One Tree Planted to plant trees. The decision on where these trees are planted is left to their discretion; focusing on areas of urgent need. This ensures that our contributions are both meaningful and timely.

So far, One Tree Planted has planted 600 trees on our behalf, with reports and contributions made quarterly.
Partnering with One Tree Planted:
A Journey to Sustainability
My partnership with One Tree Planted was inspired by a series of insightful events and a deepening awareness of sustainability issues. After receiving the 2023 ASID Illinois Industry Partner Wildcard Award for 'The Encore Collection,' a sustainability initiative with Bellehaven Design, and engaging in discussions about the sustainable use of antiques with interior design students, I recognized the significant role that Antique Resources could play in environmental conservation.

This recognition was further reinforced by my ongoing monitoring of materials impacting our industry, including the endangered status of woods such as mahogany and rosewood, commonly used in antique furniture. This comprehensive understanding ultimately guided my decision to partner with One Tree Planted, affirming our commitment to contributing positively to the environment.

Their mission inspired me to highlight the sustainability of antiques, which are crafted from durable, low carbon footprint, old-growth woods. This partnership underscores our shared dedication to preserving the planet's resources, affirming that antiques are indeed a green choice.
Check out the beautiful glow in the wood in this George III (1760-1820) Mahogany Three-Pedestal Extendable Dining Table. The vibrancy is attributed to the 200-year-old Mahogany wood.
Historically, the trade in antiques was driven more by interest in aesthetics, history, and craftsmanship; sustainability happened to be a byproduct.

The Sustainability of Antique Wood
In our commitment to sustainability and quality, it's important to highlight a key aspect of antique furniture that sets it apart from contemporary pieces: the remarkable durability and strength of the woods.

This enduring quality isn't just by chance; it's a direct result of the sustainable practices of the past. The slower pace of consumption and the limited availability of resources necessitated more careful and deliberate use of materials. This approach to material use, driven by necessity rather than environmental consciousness as we understand it today, inadvertently resulted in practices that were more sustainable.

Antique furniture boasts wood from trees that were allowed to grow to full maturity before being harvested.
Above image shows a new piece of red oak wood and 100-year-old mahogany wood.
This patience and respect for nature's timeline ensured the wood developed a tight grain, making it significantly stronger and more resilient than much of the wood used in modern furniture manufacturing.

Today's demands on supply have led to younger trees being harvested prematurely, resulting in lumber with a looser grain and, consequently, less strength and durability. If you do purchase modern furniture ensure that the wood comes from lumber companies certified by FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and SFI (Sustainable Forest Initiative).

With antique pieces, the sustainability guesswork is taken out. The lumber used in Georgian pieces comes from an era when the natural growth cycle of trees was honored, allowing them to reach their full potential, on average anywhere 50 to 100 years or more, in comparison to today's lumber being harvested in as little as 25 to 35 years.

This contributed to the exceptional quality and longevity of the furniture and a more sustainable relationship with our forests. Every time we choose an antique piece, we're not just selecting a unique item with character and history; we're also opting for furniture that embodies the principles of sustainability and eco-consciousness.

By appreciating and choosing antique wood furniture, we support a legacy of environmental stewardship and enjoy the benefits of superior craftsmanship and materials that have stood the test of time.

Let's embrace the beauty and sustainability of antique furniture, celebrating its contribution to a greener and more sustainable future.
Embracing Eco-Friendly Elegance in Antique Care
As we navigate towards a future that values sustainability, our dedication to eco-friendly practices shines through in how we care for antique furniture. At Antique Resources, we are committed to employing time-honored, eco-conscious techniques that honor the planet while maintaining our antiques' authentic charm and resilience.

Our approach to caring for these timeless pieces involves selecting materials that are as kind to the earth as they are to the wood.

We choose shellac, a natural resin produced by the Lac bug, over synthetic alternatives like polyurethane, and we prefer beeswax, a precious gift from bees, and carnauba wax, from the leaves of the carnauba palm tree, instead of petroleum-based products. This method of preservation is not an innovation; rather, it is the proper way to care for the valuable furniture we safeguard and offer. This means they can decompose naturally, reintegrating with the environment without leaving harmful residues, minimizing pollution, and reducing landfill mass.

The natural materials we opt for, such as shellac and natural waxes, are biodegradable.

Conversely, synthetic options like polyurethane and petroleum are difficult to disintegrate, potentially persisting for centuries and releasing chemicals as they degrade. Moreover, their production demands a considerable amount of energy and resources, leading to increased carbon emissions and the depletion of non-renewable resources.

By embracing eco-friendly practices in antique care, we not only ensure the longevity and beauty of these pieces but also contribute to a more sustainable world. At Antique Resources, we believe in the power of making a difference—one tree, one antique at a time.
