Couple inherits appreciation for antiques
Seamlessly Blends minimalism and maximalism
(Greetings!
Antique Resources is excited to hear that antiques have gained appeal with Millennials.

Millennials were born between 1981 and 1996 and are a global generation of racially and ethnically diverse adults who grew up during the Internet Age and embrace global ideas of sustainability, conservation, and other environmental issues.

Within that cohort is a subgroup referred to as "Grandmillennials" which refers to a person who, despite being a part of the millennial generation, tends to embrace a more traditional and nostalgic approach to life. They may have an appreciation for older fashion, decor, and cultural elements.

Grandmillennials are drawn to vintage styles and pastimes. This term has gained popularity as a way to describe a subset of millennials who have a fondness for the past. In regards to interior design, the grand millennial style refers to a design aesthetic that combines traditional and vintage elements with a contemporary twist. It is a response to the minimalist and modern design trends that have dominated in recent years.
In a nutshell, the Grandmillennial style often features:

1. Bold patterns: This includes floral prints, chintz, damask, toile, and other traditional patterns on upholstery, curtains, and wallpaper.

2. Antique and vintage furniture: The Grandmillennial style incorporates vintage or antique furniture pieces such as wingback chairs, ornate mirrors, claw-footed tables, and other classic pieces.

3. Rich colors: Deep, saturated hues like emerald green, navy blue, mustard yellow, and dusty rose are often used in grand millennial interiors. They create a sense of warmth and nostalgia.

4. Mix of textures: This style embraces a variety of textures, such as velvet, brocade, lace, and fringe. Combining different textures adds depth and visual interest to the space.

5. Collections and personal items: Grandmillennial interiors often display collections of china, books, vintage knick-knacks, and other memorabilia that evoke a sense of history and story.

6. Layered textiles: Multiple patterns and fabrics are often layered in grand millennial interiors through the use of throw pillows, blankets, and curtains. This adds a cozy and inviting feel to the space.
Overall, the Grandmillennial style is about embracing nostalgia, incorporating traditional elements, and creating a comfortable ambiance with a contemporary twist.

One of our customers, Sofia and Pablo, are from such a generation. Sofia and Pablo kindly and enthusiastically agreed to share their home to help enlighten us about this growing trend in interior design.

Sofia Cienfuegos's family is comprised of mostly artists who love antiques. Her parents, from Chile and had a passion for antiques. She credits them for gifting her with the ability to discern how things are made versus how they used to be made in terms of detail and the type of wood used. There is also the recycling aspect which is appealing.

“I am a Maximalist but feel that 100% antiques are too ‘heavy’. But I love mixing the old with the new,” said Sofia. “Pablo’s family is more Minimalist and we both love visiting estate sales as a hobby.”

Pablo Arana’s family is from Mexico City. His family has always collected antiques purchased all around the world. A History major, Pablo loves history and antiques.

The couple lives in Chicago and purchased their home while visiting an estate sale.

“We enjoy estate sales, and one sale, in particular, was from a home from 1895. The owner already gutted the home and created a modern look that appealed to us. We asked the person running the sale if the home was on the market, it was, and we bought it!”

“Sofia has a talent and an eye for antiques,” said Pablo. “We were in the market for a chandelier and Sofia knew someone who went to Antique Resources for a chandelier. We visited and purchased one, and it fits perfectly with our entrance. We also bought a French Napoleonic Era mirror and some décor objects.”

“Everything they sell is quality, in ideal shape and the staff is knowledgeable. We visit frequently,” Pablo explains.”

“We live in a home filled with treasured things. There is an emotional side to antiques that is just wonderful,” concludes Sofia.

Customers like Pablo and Sofia have interesting stories to tell. We would like to feature them in upcoming newsletters. Please reply if you wish to share yours.

Thanks for doing business with us and remember that we always love referrals!
