Arbor E-Connection
August 2012

Greetings!

At Arbor Place, Inc., we have recently modified our mission statement to read:

The mission of Arbor Place, Inc. is to provide prevention, treatment, renewal, and recovery opportunities to individuals, families, and communities impacted by substance abuse and dependence, and mental health disorders.

An organizations' mission statement is vital to provide direction within the programs and services they offer and essentially defines the reason for the organization's existence.  Over the years Arbor Place, Inc. has been able to grow our services, while still maintaining true to our focus on substance abuse disorders.  However, with growth does come change.  Three main changes have been made to our mission statement as it is stated above:

  • The word "promote" was changed to "provide."  It is our mission to deliver programs and services.  Further, we aim to be the provider of choice.
  • Instead of simply stating we want to provide programs, we expanded to list "prevention, treatment, renewal, and recovery opportunities."  Arbor Place, Inc. is currently licensed under DHS 75 and 35 to provide in seven levels of care.
  • Finally, Arbor Place's mission references providing services to both substance abuse and dependence and mental health disorders.

The Arbor Place, Inc. Board of Directors and staff welcome you to embrace our revised mission statement, as we continually strive toward reaching individuals, families, and communities in need of our services.

Staff Spotlight
Heidi Wilson, Licensed Professional Counselor
Heidi Wilson

Arbor Place, Inc. is happy to announce the addition of Heidi Wilson, LPC to our outpatient clinic. Heidi is a Licensed Professional Counselor specializing in child and adolescent mental health counseling. Specific interests include: family therapy, depression, anxiety, trauma, ADHD, emotional and behavioral regulation, and sensory integration. She is available to see new clients at Arbor Place's outpatient clinic in Menomonie and new office in Boyceville. We asked Heidi to tell us a little about herself:

"I graduated from UW -Stout with a masters of Counseling specializing in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Counseling.  I enjoy volunteering within my community and love spending as much time as possible with my family.  I have a passion for the arts in all forms and especially dance and theater.  I teach a community theater and dance guild called 'Dancing for a Cause'.  We are a small group of parent supported kids ages 4-13 who participate in small productions that incorporate tap, ballet, and jazz techniques."

Why have you chosen to work in this field?

"I decided to work in the field of mental health as a continuation of my interest in the brain and psychology.  I always knew I wanted to work in the social sciences;  Mental health incorporates this interest with my primary goal of working with others in a helping field.  I have always had a connection with children, adolescents and families so specializing in this area of the work was a natural choice for me."

What have been some rewarding experiences working at Arbor Place?

"Iwas very lucky to have had the opportunity to work in the Arbor Place Prevention office as an Americorp Member back in 2004.  I was still in school and able to get the career experience of being part of a dedicated group working towards strengthening programs within Dunn County.  It was my first experience of seeing how grant money can and does, bring positive change to our communities.  I'm so excited to be back at Arbor Place and seeing that organizations such as the Partnership for Youth, Anger Management and the Wisconsin Wins is still active and helping so many others.  One of my favorite projects when I was an Americorp Member was when I ran a middle school girl's group called Girl Power.  From this experience I learned how connecting with youth in a group setting can set the stage for positive formation of self esteem, social interactions and peer support.

I am so excited to see that Arbor Place is still partnering with other agencies such as Dunn County Human Services, 4-H, and UW-Extension to name only a few among many organizations within Dunn County who connect to strengthen our community.  Having worked with other professionals, families, individual and caregivers with disabilities across the state of WI, I am honored to be here in Dunn County where these agencies are pairing up to meet the needs of families and their citizens.  I think one of the greatest assets we have to offer is our service, care and knowledge to others, and seeing first-hand how many people continue to come together is an amazing honor to once again be a part of."

Self Care
Karisse

There are times when I enjoy reading, either on my Kindle or a paperback, but there are also times when I enjoy listening to audio-books. I wanted to share with you some thoughts from a very memorable audio book: A Weekend to Change Your Life by Joan Anderson.

As professionals in the helping field, sometimes we give so much of ourselves to help our clients, that our own needs go unattended. However, it is important to remember that taking care of ourselves, ensures that we are healthy enough to help take care of others.

* Live life to the fullest, with as little regret as possible. Set goals, have dreams, smile and find the simple pleasures in YOUR life and savor them!

* Be kind to yourself

* Remember that if you fail to take care of yourself, you are not giving others a reason to take care of you

* Do the things that you love, when you want to do it and with people that genuinely care and want to share your life with you.

* Self care is priceless and should not be placed up for bargain or debate
