The Northwest Campanologist
Last weekend I had the joy of participating in the Inland Northwest Handbell Conference in Lewiston, Idaho. It is always inspiring and energizing to get together with many other handbell musicians and make beautiful music. We had lots of fun with Brian Tervo's Singing in the Rain as many put on yellow rain hats and those on the sides and back opened umbrellas. There are still plenty of opportunities around Area 10 to get together to ring and learn more this year.

Notes from the Chair ...
If you are like me, you are always looking for new ideas for handbells. Whether from a director's or ringer's point of view, there are always new things to be learned and tried out. Over the next three months, I am going to highlight some resources that are available to members of Handbell Musicians of America - resources that are full of ideas, tips and helps to ringers and directors of all size groups.
This month I am going to highlight one of the most obvious and available benefits of HMA membership: The Overtones journal. This publication, now being issued quarterly, is the official newsletter/magazine of our national organization. The online version is included with all levels of membership; the print version is included with some levels as well.
The Overtones contains information from four areas:
1.
Communication
The Overtones always includes communication from our national board. There are columns from our board president, our executive director and from the editor. There are usually columns from other national level folks as well, such as our regional membership coordinators. This last issue had a special section on the national board election and candidates. This is the way our national board and office keep us informed as to what is going on at the national level - especially important for those of us here in the west who may not get to a national event very often. It is a great way to stay in the loop.
2. Education
Secondly, the Overtones is all about education. I love poring over the articles in each issue written by directors, teachers, and ringers from all over the country. I love to hear their ideas and what works for them. I also love reading about their struggles and what they are doing to overcome them. The subjects run the gamut: bells in schools, bells in churches, community groups, music reading, directing techniques, roundtable discussions.... The list seems endless.
3. Events
We all love going to events, and the Overtones has info on them all. National events are of course given center stage, both with information with how to take part and with articles covering all the fun. The events calendar contains all the pertinent information on HMA sponsored and endorsed events around the country, so you can always find somewhere nearby to ring!
4. Bonus!
THIS IS MY FAVORITE PART! Every issue of Overtones has a center section called Tips and Tools. It is a pullout section that has an immediately applicable tool. It might be a piece of music relevant to the season, it might be an exercise on a specific technique, it might be a survey for your choir, it might be a sample order of service, or it might be a handbell craft. I have a whole 3-ring binder of these that I refer to often and there's nothing like free music!
The Overtones is now coming into the digital age. Each current issue, and more and more past issues are available on line through the national website. This makes it so easy to access all the great articles, and definitely cuts down on the piles of paper in my house!

Handchime Loan Program
Looking for a great way to enhance your music program at your school or church? Area 10 can help. We have multiple sets of handchimes to loan for FREE for a whole year to help you get started.
Each set comes with a collection of music and teaching materials for you to use to build your program. Area 10 will also help you by connecting you with an experienced director in your area to assist you and to answer your questions. With "modern technology", we can even support you with video conferencing so you can actually see and hear the answers to your questions even when there are many miles between us and in-person visits are less practical. We want you to succeed!

The Art of Performance
As handbell ringers, we usually practice once a week, wo
rking on the music, be it for a formal concert or music during the church service. We spend time trying to play the right notes at the right tim
e, in the right dynamic, but often we do not give much thought to
polishing the performance. Here are some notes to help with that polish.
Start well before the performance [the first time you get your music] by noting on the top of your music what equipment you need [accidentals, chimes, mallets]. Also, note the starting notes. I like to write the notes used [ie Bb B C] and circle the notes that play first so there is no chance of starting off with a wrong note.
Arrive early, with plenty of time to make sure all your bells are set out, including any chimes and mallets that are needed. Also, make sure your music is open to the correct piece, prepped for fast page turns and at the first page. Arriving early also allows you to be mentally prepared to play. The last thing you need is to be rushing in at the last minute in a fluster.
When your choir moves to the table to play:
Have your gloves ON already.
Enter in ringer order so the entrance is smooth.
Immediately look at your music and imagine the rhythm, t
empo and dynamic you are about to play.
Glance at the ringer's music either side of you to make sure everyone is playing the correct piece.
Look up at the director ready for signals and be ready to play.
During the performance, do not mouth the count or make facial expressions that give away you played a wrong note.
At the end of the performance, hold your last note and watch the director for the cutoff, then freeze. All ringers should put the bells down together then freeze again until the applause has finished, or the ending pause is complete. Do not start changing your music until the applause is complete. This is your moment of glory. Accept the applause warmly.
All ringers should leave the tables again as a group, in order.
Avoiding Nerves or Stage Fright
Stage fright can happen to anyone at any time during a performance. The best defense is to be rock solid with your part and laser focused on the music. Do not be distracted by anything.
The common misconception is to practice until you get it right. This is not right, it is a recipe for disaster. You must practice until you cannot get it wrong. Have you ever experienced mastering something and then have a hard time doing it wrong on purpose. [try saying ABCDEGF] Your technique must be so solid that you do not need to think about it, ringing circles, damping short notes, etc. Then you can focus more on the notes. Be so familiar with the notes and rhythm that it comes naturally and allows you to look up at the director and be able to find your place again, easily.

Our Guest conductor this year is Ellie Hodder. She has directed the Bronze Conference Choir for the past six years and we are thrilled Ellie will be sharing her musical talents with the whole conference.
Stepping into the position of Bronze Conference Choir Conductor is Barb Walsh, artistic director and conductor of Tintabulations Handbell Ensemble of Reno, Nevada. The theme for 2017 is "Ringing Out Loud" reflected in a fun and energized list of repertoire. As always the Bronze Conference Choir is by application, with rehearsals beginning on Friday afternoon at 4pm.

Be part of the fun this July as we all come together to ring, renew old friendships and remember the old friends and the way we were. The music that the Massed and Division choirs will be ringing is varied, fun and includes a few works composed or arranged by Brian Tervo and Matthew Compton-Area 10 members. Our class line-up offers learning opportunities for everyone-a chance to expand your ringing skills and make new friends. Friday evening we will open with a concert by Handbells Unlimited!, our Friday Ensemble Track workshop leaders. Saturday evening will be a showcase concert-ALL soloists, ensembles and choirs are invited to participate. Coppers Classic 2017 - Registration now OPEN!
 Coppers Classic 2017 is all set for a fabulous conference in Portland October 13-15.
This is a rare learning event just for coppers level musicians who are motivated to improve their skills and musicality in the company of other handbell musicians of similar skills and passion for at the instrument.
Clinician, Ellie Hodder, has a diverse and delightfully challenging repertoire planned that will send you home humming more than one great tune.

 Saturday, April 29 - 10:00 am to Noon, A Lesson in Bronze, First United Methodist Church,1376 Olive St., Eugene. Handbell Artist Elizabeth Mays will present a workshop highlighting specialized handbell techniques for use in worship and performance. She will also be performing some solo numbers. Elizabeth is a recent graduate of Azusa Pacific Lutheran University, earning a Masters in Conducting and the first Masters in Handbell Performance in the United States. She is an accomplished teacher, performer and bronze enthusiast. She currently performs with the professional percussion group, Timbre, as well as in solo concerts. Elizabeth also works as Student Services Coordinator for Anaheim University and is the Director of Music at Westchester United Methodist Church in Los Angeles, CA.

Nativity Lutheran Church (60850 Brosterhous Rd, Bend) presents their 4th annual "community church choir" concert featuring favorite songs and hymns, new and old, with special guests, The Bells of Sunriver, from Sunriver Christian Fellowship.
