It's election time!!! Every other year the Area 10 membership elects a Chair-Elect and either a Secretary or Treasurer. The Chair-Elect serves a 6-year term moving to Chair in two years then to Past Chair for two more years. The Secretary and Treasurer each serve 4-year terms. We elected a secretary two years ago.

Biographies of the Chair-Elect and Treasurer candidates are below Brian's "From the Chair" article. Ballots will be mailed the end of this week to each official member of Handbell Musicians of America in Area 10. Many of you receiving this newsletter are ringers and part of a church/organization that is a member. You will not receive a ballot, but are encouraged to talk with your director about the elections and make a recommendation for their vote. Ballots must be postmarked by September 2, 2014. These bios will also be on our Area 10 website, http://area10.handbellmusicians.org.

At the end of the event listings there are several pictures from the Yakima conference. Many thanks to Shosh Meyer for sending these.

Please remember to forward this to members of your choir and encourage them to join the list. You can update your information by clicking "Update Profile/Email Address" at the very bottom of the newsletter on the left.

From the Chair ...

Greetings Handbell Musicians.Brian Tervo

August is here, and while it's still summer, and a month where many of us don't have regular rehearsal schedules, it's also a time when many of us focus our attention on planning for the upcoming fall season. An important component of this planning that I often overlook is recruiting, and I wanted to share a few of my thoughts in regard to encouraging new folks to join a handbell choir.

I believe the most important aspect of recruiting is to find ways to make the program less intimidating for newcomers. If a group consistently plays well, regardless of the level of music chosen, many folks will think "I could never do that" and become fearful that they might ruin it for everyone else. There are a couple of things I have done with my groups which enable others to try things out with minimal to no risk.

Some years, I will schedule a handbell open house. During the open house, I show the participants the bell equipment and teach them how to ring with a goal of having them play a piece of music by the end of the session. An important key to success is having an assortment of music of varying difficulty on hand so you can choose what is most appropriate for the folks who show up. If you end up with mostly folks who can read music, you might be successful handing out a Level 1 or Level 2 handbell piece. If most of your participants do not have a musical background, something like the "Ring Along" series published by Cantabile Press might be more appropriate. This series uses circled or underlined words to familiar songs rather than actual music to indicate ringing and damping. Regardless of the level of music, the goal is to have folks leaving the session with confidence, such that they might consider joining your group at some point in the future.

Another thing I have done is to schedule time 45-60 minutes before a service, and have anyone who wishes "drop in" to ring bells during congregational singing at the upcoming service. This requires some preparation since you need to know the hymns ahead of time so you can plan an appropriate accompaniment. In some cases, picking a few bells to randomly ring will suffice. Other times, you may choose to read out of the hymnal - either all four parts, or just the melody. If you're really ambitious, you can write your own accompaniment. When accompanying hymns, it's also important to coordinate with the organist, the band, or whoever is leading congregational singing so you don't catch them by surprise.

Another thing I have found is that the ringers in my choir are much more successful than I am in terms of encouraging newcomers to join. Part of this may be my personality, and will vary from one director to the next. However, the ringer's perspective on how the group operates is going to be different from the director, and I get the impression that having a ringer provide their perspective to a potential newcomer is more believable and more effective. As a director, I regularly encourage my ringers to invite others to participate.

I wish all of you the best as you work through your fall planning and hope all your groups have a successful year.

She sang for over 10 years with the Great Falls Symphonic Choir and is an active vocal soloist in the communities of Shelby and Conrad. He is currently ringing with Bells of the Cascades in Portland, Oregon and is also a solo ringer and a frequent instructor at handbell events and was the facility coordinator for the Handbell Musicians of America National Seminars in 2013 and 2014. Brian is currently the President of Bells of the Cascades and has been its Vice-President and Treasurer. Outside of bells, Brian received a JD/MBA from Willamette University in 2001.
