Notes from the Chair
I just got home from National Seminar. As I warned you last month, I need a re-entry program. It is so hard to get back into real life after spending a week in handbell heaven! Seminar is somewhat like a reunion, and it is very hard for me to leave friends, new and old, and come home to mundane things like laundry.
I could tell you about the greatest class I took or about the amazing concerts. However, I think I'll tell you about something I only got to watch from the sidelines: Distinctly Teen.
Distinctly Teen is designed for individual young musicians (8th-12th grade) who wish to stretch their ringing skills and challenge their musicianship. Participants spent 2½ days working on intermediate to advanced repertoire under the leadership of Emily Li, founder and Artistic Director of the Hong Kong Handbell Academy. Emily loves nurturing youngsters through ringing, and her youth ensemble has performed around the world.
My daughter took part in Distinctly Teen again this year, and it was a great experience for her. The first rehearsal was pretty shaky, she tells me, but by Saturday afternoon they pulled together a polished and moving concert. What a joy it was to watch these teens perform with finesse and confidence. My daughter told me, "It was so great to spend time with other kids my age that get it. I try to tell my friends at home about bells, but they just don't get it." I understand that. It's hard to explain to people that aren't involved in handbells what we do.
Director Emily Li, in introducing the group said, "Here is the future of handbells!" She is right. If we our art form is to remain viable, we need to lower the average age of our ringers. We need the teenagers, the twenty and thirty-somethings.
Your area leadership and national board spent a lot of time in their visioning meeting on this very topic. Lots of ideas were brought out, such as fostering college handbell programs, using bells more often in contemporary style churches, and following up with youth after they leave school to help them find places in adult choirs. However, when it came down to it, the thing that we kept coming back to was personal relationships. The reason anyone joins any kind of group these days is due to a personal connection. This is what we must foster.
Youngsters and young adults are spread thin these days. But people will make time for what matters to them. And what matters is personal. So think about this when you are looking for new ringers, especially young ones. Make it personal. Find a way to make them "get it" - for them to see why bells would be important in their life. Coppers Classic 2018 - October 12-14
Coppers Classic
is a massed ringing event for advanced coppers handbell musicians held annually in Portland, Oregon with Ellie Hodder, clinician. Our handbell musicians are solidly coppers musicians. They have good handbell skills, a commitment to their ensemble and are the backbone of their choir. Passion and the desire to learn and grow as a handbell musician are the qualities that characterize those who will have a great Coppers Classic experience but, most of all they love handbells!
Participants come from all over the United States and Canada.
Musicians rehearse for three days and present a public concert on Sunday October 14, 2018 at 4 pm.
Area 10 Scholarship to Coppers Classic
Coppers Classic offers one adult and one full-time student scholarship. The stipend includes registration and up to $50 towards the purchase of music. Applications due by July 27, 2018. Complete details at

Mark your calendars now for the June 2019 Area Conference. Sondra Tucker will be our Conductor for the Bronze Conference Choir (BCC) and Massed Ringing. Area 10's Matthew Compton will be the Conductor for the TINS and COPPERS divisions. Staying in local housing will NOT be required-so if you are local we invite you to commute.
Repertoire for the conference will be finalized in August-allowing the purchase of the conference music for your 2018-2019 ringing season.
