Please note that the deadline for submitting All-Star Choir audition materials is February 15, 2014. I hope many of you will audition for this choir that will be under the direction of David Harris. There is so much being offered at the conference for handbell musicians at all levels. Please be sure to read all about it by clicking the link in the conference article below.
This is our busiest season as handbell musicians. As we share our music, be sure to take time to enjoy family and other events during the month. I wish all of you a very blessed Christmas and Happy New Year.

From the Chair ....
Greetings Handbell Musicians.
Anyone who knows me or sees me on a regular basis can tell you that I am not a fan of Christmas music. Like many of you, I have been looking at Christmas music since July or August, and rehearsing Christmas music with my choirs since September. By the time we get to December, I'm not terribly interested in listening to the Christmas "Muzak" blasting the speakers at the local grocery store, or worse, listening to those irritating advertising jingles where they take well-known Christmas tunes, and have the audacity to alter the words to promote a product. Then, let's not forget tunes like "Let it Snow" or "White Christmas" which promote snowfall, failing to consider all the headaches it causes (at least for those of us in Western Washington who do not deal with icy road conditions well).
Now that the "Grinch" in me has spoken, I wanted to share with you a few of my personal favorite handbell Christmas arrangements I've either played or listened to over the years. These are all pieces I consider every year when planning Christmas repertoire for my choirs.
- It Came Upon a Midnight Clear (arr. Arnold Sherman) - I still remember the day I first heard this setting on the demo CD. I had just arrived home after a long and stressful day of work and was listening to the CD in the background while checking personal email on the computer. When this piece started, it immediately caught my attention. I had to stop what I was doing, just to listen and relax. I really like the opening which is a bit of a hemiola between the high bells and the melody on the chimes, and love the ending with the tower swings (striking twelve midnight) accompanying a strain of "Angels We Have Heard on High".
- Ukranian Bell Carol (arr. Hart Morris) - Searching "Carol of the Bells" on a couple handbell vendors' web sites turned up more than 20 different arrangements of this well-known bell novelty, and this is not including medleys incorporating this tune or even the setting I'm calling out here, which is likely out of print. Of all the "Carol of the Bells" settings, this one is still my favorite. I still remember the first time I performed this piece years ago in Bells of the Sound, when we opened the Seattle Men's Chorus concert series on a lift raising us out of the orchestra pit.
- Still, Still, Still (arr. Cathy Moklebust - the 5-7 octave setting) - This is one of my favorite Christmas tunes, and I really like what Cathy did in this setting, basing much of it on a whole tone scale. Moklebust has written a number of great arrangements over the years, but I think this one is my favorite. Although this isn't necessarily a reason this makes this list, I do believe this is the only piece of published handbell music that calls for playing a C9 by itself (not doubled or on top of a chord).
- Away in a Manger (arr. Betty Garee) - I believe that most, and perhaps all of Betty Garee's music was written before I ever played my first handbell, but I have been blessed to have taken over a handbell program which has a music library containing many handbell "classics" written in the 1970s and 1980s. Garee often wrote in an impressionistic style which I don't believe has been successfully duplicated by any other handbell composer to this day, some 20-30 years later. Like Moklebust, I had a hard time choosing just one Garee piece to include on this list.
- The Angel Gabriel from Heaven Came (arr. Joel Raney) - This is the newest arrangement to make my list, and may be the only one that is currently in print. I first heard this piece at Distinctly Bronze last February, where many referred to it as the "Harry Potter" piece. Unlike many handbell composers, Joel Raney was a professional musician and published composer for years before first being introduced to handbells, and all of his music brings a fresh contemporary style to our art. This particular arrangement was selected for one of the Coppers ringing divisions at our upcoming Area 10 Conference in Yakima.
As many of you and your handbell groups head into a busy season of concert performances or worship schedules, I hope that you have been able to include your favorites, new and old, into this year's repertoire. Even though I'm generally not a fan of Christmas music, it is nice to have the opportunity to share a well written arrangement with a congregation or concert audience.

Area 10 Handchime Loan Program
We just finished studying major/minor tonalities. Here is a pic of them ringing "Oh, My Monster Frankenstein" in c minor. They had previously learned "Oh, My Darling Clementine" in C Major. I use colored ponytail holders to color code chords. With just two, it's easy and fun. Also, great to work on dotted half notes. We began ringing with Kookaburra, one chord, and whole notes. Next we worked on damping and two chord songs. One 4th grade class was so amazing together, I took them "on the road" on Halloween and "treated" the office staff to "Oh, My Monster . . "! We LOVE having the chimes! Choir will be adding chimes on the bass line to our song "Walking in the Air". They really add a gorgeous "dreamy" quality.

Making Music in the Golden Years

 The Rogue Valley Manor, a retirement community in Medford Oregon, has their own bell choir: the Rogue Valley Manor Ringers. The choir was founded in 1994 by Marge Knotts, with her personal 2 octave set of Schulmerich handbells. With the founding of the bell choir, Marge also had the roll of teacher as all the new members in the choir were new to ringing. After seventeen years directing the group, and forty-seven total years of ringing/directing, she stepped down in 2011 at the age of 92.
Marge was inspired to bring bells to her home church in 1964 after attending a NW regional gathering in Portland of AGEHR in 1964. Upon returning home Marge decided the best way to get a bell program rolling was to purchase her own two octave set of bells (the largest sets available at the time) for the Ebert Memorial United Methodist Church in Springfield, Oregon. With her new set of handbells Marge began both youth a nd adult handbell choirs at her church in 1964. This program was one of the first in Oregon. In 1974 she and her husband moved to Medford, Oregon where they joined the First United Methodist Church. Marge founded the church's expansive handbell program that year, starting with her personal two octave set of handbells, directing all the handbell groups, Middle School, High School, Adult and Senior Adult choirs, until 1988 when she passed the baton to another. Over the years FUMC, Medford have purchased their own set of bells (a 5 octave set and a 3 octave set) and chimes.
The current director of the Rogue Valley Manor Handbell Choir is Carroll Graber, a retired music teacher, who also arranges music that meet the performance needs and fit the skill set of this bell choir. He and Marge worked together for a few years as Marge schooled Carroll in the art of handbell ringing before she stepped down. Over the years the Manor community has added octaves to the original set Marge brought with her and purchased a set of chimes for the bell choir. The choir meets weekly for an hour to rehearse for their several times a year recitals and for the couple times a year they play in the weekly vespers services.
Each fall new members are recruited as older members move on. Currently there are twelve members in the bell choir; ten of those were first-time ringers in their retirement. One member has Alzheimer's which hasn't slow him down once; he is able to follow the score and ring his position with ease but needs a little help now and then from his neighbors who make sure he has the correct piece of music up. The members of the choir, who range in age from 63 to 83 are retired from professions that range from Physicians, a Physics Professor, Band Directors, Small Business Owners to Bankers, Librarians and Engineers; all have found a fun and musical way to help keep their minds young and bodies moving which also allows them to bring enjoyment to their fellow retirement community friends. The Manor Bell Choir is only one of five music groups that were founded and are run by the residents of the Rogue Valley Manor. The other groups are: The Brass Choir, a String Orchestra, The Manor Chorale and the Rogue Valley Recorder Consort. All helping to keep the music alive in the golden years of the Manor residents.

Mark your calendars now for the 2014 Siskiyou Summit Handbell Conference set for May 9-10 in Ashland, Oregon. I am pleased to announce that our Guest Conductor/Clinician for 2014 is Area 10's own Fred Gramann. Ringing under him is a delightful privilege as he is a wonderful teacher and fine musician. The theme for this year's Siskiyou Summit is Spirit and is reflected in the repertoire choices, which are suitable for Lent, Easter and Pentecost. Ellie Hodder will once again conduct the Bronze Conference Choir with Fred conducting the Massed Ringing and both The Siskiyous and Cascades groups.
Registration for the event will be $65/ringer if registered by March 1st, after March 1st registration will be $75/person. Registration materials will be available beginning January 1st, space is limited so register early.
