From the Chair's computer ...

Happy Thanksgiving - as we come to the end of the first half of our ringing season. Directors, thank your ringers for the hard work they have put in so far, and Ringers thank your directors for their leadership and vision. Relax into the hectic Christmas Ringing season and enjoy! Have fun with the music you are preparing and gift it with love to your congregations and audiences bringing them a bit of joy. Remember why we ring and have fun! A Blessed Christmas to you and your family far and near.

Around the Area and Beyond...

As you rush around finding the perfect gift for you family and friends remember Area 10 Needs You! Now is the time to give your time to Area 10 Handbell Musicians of America - the organization that has supported you in your handbell endeavors and where you have learned and grown as a Handbell Musician; help others to do the same. Contact Diane Barnes, at chair.aea10@handbellmusicians.org and learn how you can give to Area 10.

Collaboration

One of the biggest untapped areas of handbell musicianship is collaboration with non-handbell musicians. To be sure, there are a good number of handbell pieces out there with an optional flute or tambourine part. But how often have you seen a handbell ensemble as part of a full orchestra, wind ensemble, or rock band? While I have personally seen handbells in these settings, I can count the instances on the fingers of one hand. I've also occasionally used small groups of handbell players with praise bands in contemporary worship settings, but have seen this kind of thing done very rarely in other churches. Most other instruments (flute, violin, trumpet, etc.) are found regularly playing with multiple types of ensembles, but for some reason this isn't the case with handbells.

The school I teach at, Forest Ridge, has an excellent women's choir. The choir director and I have talked often about combining our groups' forces, but we've discovered that there is very little published music written for SSA choir plus handbell choir (though there are, again, lots of pieces for SSA "plus 4 optional handbells"). Publishers have told me that the reason they don't publish these kinds of pieces is because so few groups are interested in using them. If the handbell community can demonstrate our willingness and interest in music that puts us in combination with other types of ensembles, publishers - and composers - will follow suit and make more of this music available.

As we in Handbell Musicians of America strive to make handbells more of a mainstream instrument and not just a novelty for Christmastime, we need to show the musical community that we are able and willing to "play well with others." Heading into the new year of 2016, I encourage you to find ways to collaborate with other musical groups in your church, school, or community. The possibilities are endless!

Cathy earned both her B.A. (Music/Percussion, 1982) and M.Ed. (Teacher Education/Music, 1988) at South Dakota State University, in her hometown of Brookings, SD.   She was encouraged in composition by her music theory professors Mary Alice Spencer Berger and Dr. Paul H.
