Greetings Handbell Musicians.

It's November, and with Thanksgiving at the end of the month, I wanted to take a moment to share my gratitude for some of the folks who have made it possible for me to experience the joy of making music with handbells.

The first individual I am thankful for is Malia Johnson.  She was my first handbell director, and I had the opportunity to participate in her first group at Grace Lutheran Church in Des Moines.  She taught me how to play the instrument, told me about the guild, and introduced me to a number of folks in the handbell world who have since become good friends.  Without Malia, it's unlikely I would have ever even heard about handbell ringing.

Within a few years of learning to play handbells, Malia encouraged me to audition for Bells of the Sound.  When I was accepted into the group, it was my first opportunity to ring in a "normal" handbell choir.  At the time, the groups at our church rarely had more than five or six people, so most of my early ringing experience in a small ensemble.  The Bells of the Sound director at the time was Martin Culbert.  I am thankful for his leadership and encouragement while I learned about bass bell ringing, Shelley/4-in-hand ringing the high bell positions, and other skills more specific to participating in a full handbell choir.

A couple years later, I had an interest in becoming a handbell director.  I am thankful for Bobbie Benjamin, who helped me secure my first directing position at Kent United Methodist Church.  I was an inexperienced director, and I appreciated the patience of the groups at Kent UMC as I improved my conducting skills.  As a conductor, I'm appreciative of the training I've received by handbell greats like David Davidson and William Payn.  I've learned from both of them by participating in conference choirs they've directed and by attending conducting workshops they've led.

More recently, I've been given the opportunity to be the musical director for the Emerald City Ringers.  When I left Bells of the Sound, I knew that at some point in my life I'd want to lead a community group, but I figured it would probably take place a few years down the road.  However, it only took a couple months for Nancy Kirkner and EsDavid to approach me and ask if I'd be interested in leading a new community choir.  With support from Bells of the Sound, Nancy and EsDavid did an incredible job getting the word out about the new group and found enough folks interested to come to our first planning meeting and our first rehearsal.  I'm also thankful for Mark and Lynn Andersen who played a key role in terms of getting the group established.

Today, I'm appreciative of everyone in all my handbell groups as we work toward making music.  I'm also thankful of the families of the folks involved in my handbell groups.  This includes the parents who bring their children to rehearsals each week as well as the spouses of folks in my adult choirs.  I want to especially thank the children of Emerald City Ringers members who come to rehearsal each week, enabling their parents to participate.  I have to admit that I was initially concerned when we setup this arrangement, and I would still have some reservations about it working with many kids.

These are great kids, and I genuinely appreciate that their presence rarely causes a disruption during rehearsal.

Last, but certainly not least, I want to thank all of my fellow Area 10 Board members.  My job as Chair would be impossible if it weren't for the passion, dedication, and support I receive from everyone on our Board.

Who are you thankful for?  Is there someone from your past you would like to acknowledge for giving you the opportunity to share in the joy of handbell ringing today?  If you have a story you'd like to share, please email it to me at chair.area10@handbellmusicians.org, and I will consider writing about it in my column next month.

      Happy Thanksgiving!
