With the return of fall, I trust you all are settled back into your rehearsal routines working on wonderful music for inclusion in a service, planning fun concerts and catching up with those you may have not seen since last spring.

As more and more of us increase the community's awareness of the handbell choir by moving out of the church setting, we have the obligation to become the best handbell musicians we can be. How can we become a better musician? Through education! By honing our ringing skills and striving to increase our musicality we move the Handbell from the status as a novelty instrument, best relegated to the Advent/Christmas season, to a respected member of the musical instrument family.

Now is the time to think about how to give back to Area 10 and Handbell Musicians of America!

A new appointed position to the Area 10 board has been created-Event Coordinator. By removing the task of organizing and putting on the Bi-Annual Area conference, the board can focus their energies on other topics that concern and affect the Area 10 membership. The event coordinator will also be available to help facilitate Area 10 members interested in hosting a ringing/educational event in their local area. This is in keeping with the Mission and Vision of Handbell Musicians of America.

Handbell Musicians of America is dedicated to advancing the musical art of handbell/handchime ringing through education, community and communication.

A community in which handbell musicians of every skill level realize their full potential through mentorship, education, and events. We envision our members uniting with others to create a world in which the art form is musically respected and has universal appeal.

A job description for this position can be seen here. If you think you have what it takes to do this job please contact Diane Barnes, the Area 10 Chair.

Those  Parenthesis and Brackets Aren't for Decoration

Brian Tervo      In recent months, I've had the opportunity to lead a few workshops. In many cases, the attendees ring in 3-octave choirs at home, and for the workshop, we are playing the 3-octave version of a piece written for 3-5 octaves. Something I found with multiple attendees at multiple workshops is that the brackets and parenthesis used to indicate which notes are to be omitted by a 3-octave choir are being ignored.

As a composer and arranger, I find the fact that many groups aren't reading the performance notes a little frustrating. If we were at a hymn festival and were asked to sing one of the verses of a hymn in unison, we're not going to choose the alto part, the tenor part, or the bass part. We are going to choose the soprano part since this is usually the melody and the voice that we readily associate as the hymn tune.
In handbell music, when we choose to ignore the parenthesis and brackets, and just play all the notes that are printed on the page, it is comparable to just signing the alto part to a hymn while selectively choosing to sing some of the notes in the soprano part. We don't do this when singing hymns, and we shouldn't do this when playing handbells. We want our audience to hear the melody line rather than a seemingly random bunch of chords where the top note is almost always B6 or C7.
While the examples I've provided are applicable to the high bells, a similar argument can be made for the bass bells. If the composer has a specific bass line or chord inversion in mind, they are going to want smaller groups to omit certain notes in the bass. While the reason for these omissions may not be as obvious, it is equally important that we follow the composer's intentions in the bass.

Regardless of the size of your group, take the time to review the performance notes and see if there are any notes that should be omitted given the size of your bell set. In most cases, 3-octave choirs are asked to omit notes in parentheses ( ) and 4-octave choirs are asked to omit notes in brackets [ ], but this isn't always the case. There are pieces where 5-octave choirs and even 6-7 octave choirs are asked to omit notes. If the music is written for 2-3 octave choirs, the parentheses are usually there for 2-octave groups. There are no standards for publishers to follow in regard to omitted notes, so to give our audience the most musical performance possible, it's important that we review the performance notes so we know what to omit when starting to work on any new piece of music.
