My choir begins rehearsing on September 7. Yours is probably starting around the same time. It's time to work on making beautiful music which takes understanding the musical score and working on techniques to ring our best. It is also time to plan on getting together with other handbell musicians in your "neighborhood" by attending one of the many conferences planned this fall and in 2017. These opportunities are all described in articles below. Our Area 10 conference will be in July 2017 at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon.

Please forward this newsletter to your choir members and to anyone else who would be interested in all the concerts and events. Encourage them to subscribe to the newsletter. Click "Join our mailing list" at the bottom of the left column or click the newsletter link on our website, area10.handbellmusicians.org. With permission, I can also add names and addresses.

From the Chair's computer ...

This is my last installment of From the Chair's Computer.  On October 1st Diane Hould will step into the office of Area 10 Chair as I step down.  I will become the Past Chair and step into the Events Coordinator position. I am looking forward to organizing the upcoming Area 10 Handbell Conference next July 7-9 and helping facilitate regional and local events.  The board has made the decision that the Area can be better served through endorsing or sponsoring local events that are smaller in scope and tailored to meet the needs of local handbell musicians.  Please, contact me or Diane Hould if you know of a need in you locality for an educational workshop, a ringing event or other gathering that would benefit you and other handbell musicians.  It is through local grass roots organizing and by local handbell musicians who see a need and work to meet that need that a new tradition begins.

Siskiyou Summit Handbell Conference will hold its 10th annual event in 2017. In 2008 Rogue Valley Handbell Festival was rebranded Siskiyou Summit when I took over the event from Marcy Winter. Rogue Valley Handbell Festival was founded in the early 1980s when Marcy Winter saw a need for a local event that would bring educational opportunities with Nationally recognized clinicians to a far flung region-Southern Oregon and Northern California-where most of the handbell community was unable to attend National and/or Area events.  It started small and grew over the years.  I know Siskiyou Summit meets the educational/training needs of handbell choirs and individuals who don't or can not attend any other event.

I challenge you to think about your local handbell communities, talk with other choirs in the area and find out what kind of training/workshops/ringing you think might help you to become better Handbell Musicians.  Then talk to the Area 10 board and the Events Coordinator to find out how we can help you start a new ringing tradition in you home town.

Bell Trees!

Do You Have a Bell Tree Stand?

As a result of the enthusiasm felt after the bell tree emphasis at National Seminar in July, we're trying to determine first where the bell tree stands are in Area 10. If you have one, your choir has one, or you know of someone who has a bell tree stand, please email Barbara Brocker at bfbfbrocker@gmail.com.

We're also trying to identify bell tree players and choirs in Area 10 which have used bell t  rees. We're hoping to connect and encourage the use of bell trees in our Area. Please pass this information on to Barbara Brocker at the above email.

Bells of the Cascades' New Music Director

Bells of the Cascades is pleased to announce its new music director, Matthew Compton.

Matthew is a Colorado Springs native who has been composing, arranging and conducting music for handbells since 2007 when he was in the eighth grade. He had his first composition published at the age of 15, making him one of the youngest ever published handbell composers. He has numerous compositions and arrangements in print or in the publishing process.

An avid performer, player and student of handbell music, Matthew is known for his high-energy originals and arrangements and beautiful harmonies. His music has been performed across the world by many elite groups, including The Agape Ringers, the Alleluia Ringers of Concordia University Wisconsin, Pikes Peak Youth Ringers, and Hong Kong Youth Handbell Ensemble. In addition, Matthew's music has been selected for the repertoire for regional and national handbell festivals, including Distinctly Bronze East and West, and the International Handbell Symposium.

Matthew will graduate in December from Concordia University Wisconsin with a degree in music and a focus on composition and conducting. During his time at Concordia, he rang with the Alleluia Ringers, a touring handbell choir; started a student handbell choir to perform at an annual campus event; and was the handbell director at a local church.

Bells of the Cascades is very excited to have Matthew join us as our next music director starting in January 2017!
