From the Chair's computer ...
Earlier this year there had been some inquiries about the biennial Area 10 Conference for 2016. The biennial conference has been moved to the ODD numbered years and will take place in 2017 and in following ODD numbered years. The reasons for moving to the ODD numbered years are: 1) We wanted to allow for individuals and choirs in Area 10 to participate in the 17th International Handbell Symposium in Vancouver BC and not to have to choose between the Area conference and the Internal Symposium 2) the reason for states west of the Mississippi to hold an Area conference on the EVEN numbered years no longer exists, and by moving to ODD numbered years individuals/choirs who might want to attend an Area 12, Area 11 or Area 7 summer festival can make that decision with out having to choose between Area 10 and another Area.
Planning for the 2017 Area 10 Conference is under way. The event will be held July 7-9 at Oregon State University, Corvallis OR. We will be using their conference facilities for ringing and workshops, and offering campus housing with all meals provided by the university food services. Corvallis is located about a half hour drive from the I-5 corridor and an hour from Newport, on the Oregon Coast, making this a great vacation destination for the whole family-whether or not they ring.
Our "Out of Area" guest conductor is Jason Wells, directing the massed pieces and a Bronze Conference Choir open to ringers by application. Our "In Area" guest conductor is Brian Tervo, directing the Division Choirs. Special guests will be Area 10's own Handbells Unlimited! the duet ensemble of Beth Davidson and David Jordan. They will be leading an Ensemble Ringing Track on Friday the 7th and present a concert that evening. Watch our web page and this publication for more details about the 2017 Area 10 Conference in the coming months.

Around the Area and Beyond...
April brings conferences in Montana, Oregon and Washington. It is not too late to participate in any of these events. July 26-30 is the International Handbell Symposium in Vancouver, BC.
The Second Annual Coppers' Classic is scheduled for Oct 14-16 with Ellie Hodder conducting. Registration is open! All the information is on our website.

Area 10 Ad Hoc Choir to attend International Symposium
This coming July, 24 ringers will be traveling to Vancouver, BC to represent Area 10 at the International Handbell Symposium. When the location was announced for the International Symposium, the need was felt to have a strong presence and support shown from Area 10. Therefore, the board decided to form an ad hoc choir so those not ringing with a full choir would have a group to ring with. An application process was developed and sent out, and soon the applications were flooding in! Almost all the ringers are from Area 10, with a few ringers being friends or past residents who have since moved to other areas.
Some ringers, like Wes Whitley have attended an International Symposium before. He shared this memory: "We still recount stories from the 1996 symposium remembering all the different choirs, nationalities, languages and diversity of music. You would never forget rehearsal sessions in three languages, sharing with ringers from different countries over dinner, and the warm fellowship that you find with other campanologists. With the 2016 event being close to home it was an easy decision for us to sign up again."
Several ringers are excited for the comradery of ringing with new friends. Barb Brocker, who will be ringing with us and also presenting a workshop at the symposium says, "I'm looking forward to meeting and playing with a whole new bunch of ringers from all over the Northwest." Fellow Montanan Wendy Goodheart shared, "I am so excited for the International Festival. It will be an eye opening experience to see choirs from other states as well as from other countries!"
We will be sending a full five octave choir plus a 4 ½ octave choir to Vancouver to ring exciting and challenging music. As is the pattern for international symposia, music is chosen to represent the different cultures attending and conductors from across the globe will be leading us. The schedule also allows time for workshops, concerts, socializing and sightseeing. We are excited for the opportunity to ring with others from around the world, sharing the thing that unites us: great handbell music. As ringer Sharon Kirry states, "I love meeting people from different cultures and hearing the different languages spoken. We all unite through the medium of music so we then all speak the same language!"

Handchime Loan Program
 Area 10 has seven 3-octave sets of handchimes that are loaned out for the school year. Applications for the 2016-17 school year are due June 1. Please help spread the word to teachers in our area by sending them the application and encouraging them to apply. The sets are complete with music and curriculum.

Coppers' Classic is an advanced ringing event for motivated intermediate level handbell musicians. Coppers' Classic strives to create a supportive environment where learning and tackling musical challenges is encouraged and where growing together as a community of ringers is fun. The weekend is dedicated to helping musicians advance their skills and technique and to emerge as more mature musicians. Our clinician/conductor is Ellie Hodder.
Ellie is a talented and skilled conductor, clinician and teacher dedicated to the advancement of the art of Handbell Ringing. She has been conducting since childhood when she would wait until the house was empty, drop a vinyl record on the stereo and evoke magical music from the speakers.

Youth share their music at Native American church
This picture is of "Tommy's Tinklers," the youth handbell ringers of Moscow First United Methodist Church, Moscow, Idaho. On February 21, 2016, the youth, their pastor, Sue Ostrom, and handbell director, Andrew Crossler, traveled close to 50 miles from Moscow to Lapwai - our closest Native American Methodist church - as part of the District's Mission focus rekindling friendships between the churches.
The students in the photo are Ian Prather, Chloe White, Meghan Kaus, Christian Burt, Sierra Flisher, Teagan Riley and Josh Evans. They represent 2 different Moscow area schools and range in ages 13 to 18.
The name "Tommy's Tinklers" originated with the youth years ago to honor their director, Tom Crossler whose son, Andrew, now directs the handbell program at Moscow First United Methodist Church.

Sunday, April 14 - 4:00 pm. "Ringing in Spring", a free Bell Choir concert featuring the Bells of Sunriver, will take place at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 695 NW Third Street, Prineville. The Bells of Sunriver, under the direction of Joyce Hornish, will play selections ranging from classical to sacred, Broadway to Gershwin. The program will showcase large and small bell ensembles, as well as bell trees. The Bell Choir from Our Savior's, under the direction of Stephanie Fahlgren, will play also, and will join the Sunriver ringers for a two-choir duet to close the program.
