Contra Costa residents will find it a little easier to vote this upcoming election, as the County Elections Office is teaming up with city clerks to provide several convenient "CoCo Vote-N-Go" vote by mail ballot drop off locations prior to and on Election Day.

Brentwood, Antioch, Pittsburg, San Ramon, Orinda, Moraga, Concord, Pleasant Hill, Walnut Creek, Richmond, San Pablo, Hercules, and Pinole are among the cities who are participating in this effort. Residents were encouraged to be proactive in protecting their identity and credit, to take the time to ask questions of whom they are dealing with and to always contact law enforcement about suspicious activities. Also available to the residents after the program were representatives from Bay Area Legal Aid and Contra Costa County Senior Legal Services. A raffle was held and one lucky resident won a shredder, generously donated by AARP. A prominent intersection near Alamo Elementary School is receiving a safety makeover this Fall. Contra Costa County is adding a traffic signal, sidewalks and bike lanes at the junction of Livorna and Wilson roads. Crews will also widen roadways and enhance sight lines in the area as part of the multimillion-dollar project.

The traffic signal will not only bring traffic on Livorna to a complete stop to allow safe crossing, but will also provide additional controls for those exiting from Wilson on to Livorna. The construction overhaul on Livorna and Wilson roads is expected to run until the end of December, weather permitting, according to the county Public Works Department. Livorna Road, which carries an estimated 11,000 vehicles per day, will be widened near Alamo Elementary to include wider shoulders as well as dedicated turn lanes onto Wilson Road from both directions at the three-way intersection.

The county is advising motorists to expect delays and use alternate routes during construction over the next three-plus months. Work hours are set for 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on construction days.

theatreTown Hall Theatre Company - Bringing Live Theatre to Lafayette Since 1944
Established in 1944 as the Dramateurs and reorganized in 1992 as the Town Hall Theatre Company of Lafayette, it is
3535 School Street, Lafayette, CA  94549
the oldest continuously active theatre company in Contra  Costa County. The land and the labor to build the historic Town Hall building were donated by the community. Construction was completed in May, 1914, on land donated by Frank and Rosa Ghiglione who also contributed $200 towards building costs. The first event held in the building was a Grand Ball, and these events were so well-attended that the Sacramento Northern Railroad provided a special train from Oakland to West Lafayette. Often the festivities would begin around 9pm, with dinner at midnight, followed by dancing and more partying. One train reportedly left the Lafayette station at 5:30am.

Live theatre continues in Lamorinda because of the generosity of its citizens, and the existence and use of the Town Hall building for this purpose over so many decades is a testament to this spirit.
Box office hours: Tues-Fri 4-6 p.m. Sat 2-4 p.m.
925.283-1557
Town Hall Theatre Company brings people together to create, to learn, to explore, to interact, and to enjoy.

For over half a century, Town Hall Theatre has been training students of all ages to not only hone and sharpen their craft, but also to respect, understand and enjoy theatre in all of its incarnations. They are determined to teach students about every form of theatre imaginable through advanced training classes and production-based programs they won't experience anywhere else.

Linda Deschambault, (pictured right) was honored for her efforts as the President and Co-founder of Contra Costa County Climate Leaders, a Project of Generation Green.  The mission of the Climate Leaders Program is to help local governments take action and reduce Green House Gas emission in Contra Costa County.  To facilitate regional action, they monitor activities, provide free resources and tools and a multimedia communications strategy that ensures best practices are shared and implemented.  To learn more click here.

The Lafayette Library and Learning Center was the winning recipient in the New Construction, Government category.  The library and learning center serves as a cultural and educational hub of Lafayette. ebolaCounty Public Health Preparedness and Ebola Update
The following is an advisory written by County Health Director,  William B. Walker, MD.

Recently, we have seen the first confirmed cases of Ebola in the United States, followed by the infection of healthcare workers who helped provide care for the patients.

Understandably, news of the first Ebola cases in the United States has created concern about the possibility of being exposed to the disease. While there have not been any reported cases in California and the risk to people living and working here in Contra Costa County is currently very low, we must still be prepared to handle this or any other health emergency in order to protect employees and the public.

Ebola is spread through direct contact with the blood or other body fluids of a sick person.  Infected people become contagious when they begin experiencing symptoms, which include  fever, vomiting and diarrhea, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Visit the CDC website for more information on Ebola. To help keep you informed, I wanted to share information about what Contra Costa Health Services is doing to prepare in the event of a suspected Ebola case, as well as links to useful information. We have formed a Health Services Department Ebola Working Group to help coordinate our preparedness and response efforts. Our Regional Medical Center and Health Centers, Public Health, and Emergency Medical Services divisions are hard at work, training staff on how to identify people at risk for Ebola, following and evaluating the emerging guidance and recommendations on the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and communicating with local hospitals, providers and first responders about steps to detect, isolate and treat any suspected Ebola patients.

Once again, I want to reiterate that the risk of exposure to Ebola in Contra Costa County is currently very low. However, we still must be ready for the worst while hoping for the best. By being vigilant, we will be better prepared to care for and protect the public and contain the disease should the need arise.

You can read more about County preparedness efforts in this month's Contra Costa Health Service Director's Report and view updates and links to helpful resources. Click here to visit their website.

canyonPG&E Tree Work in Canyon

PG&E has contacted the Contra Costa County Public Works Department to inform the County of its proposed Electrical Reliability Project in the Canyon Community, which aims to trim or remove vegetation/trees that have a potential to cause damage to overhead utility lines should the tree or branches fall.  These notices are  common and the County receives these often.

The proposed trees to be removed in Canyon are within the public road right of way.  PG&E is also working with private property owners and the East Bay Regional Park District regarding trees on their property, which are slated for removal. Public Works often responds to downed trees in this area, so trimming and removal of these potential failures are to the County's benefit.
