Historic Building of the Month:
White’s Fish Market, 936 North Summit Street
In the summer of 2025, the Bowling Green Historic Preservation Commission featured three neighborhood markets as its Historic Buildings of the Month: Dillon & Moscoe at 316 Buttonwood (June); Don’s Grocery / North Grove Carry Out at 414 North Grove (July); and Boosembark’s / Eddie’s at 443 North Enterprise (August). For June 2026, we continue this series with the former White’s Fish Market at 936 North Summit Street.
On April 23, 1940, the Sentinel-Tribune announced: “Harley F. White has established a fish market at No. 936 North Summit Street; and tomorrow at two P. M. he will serve free fish sandwiches as an opener.” Harley White (1911-1973) had already been selling fish door-to-door for eleven years and had established “a fine reputation among patrons.”
In a 1971 interview in the same newspaper, White recalled how he accidentally got started in the business. In 1928, his father Alva (1883-1960) saw an ad in the paper offering herring at the wholesale price of eight cents a pound in Port Huron, Michigan. Alva had been laid off his railroad job and needed income, so he and 17-year-old Harley had the fish shipped by rail, processed them, and sold them for 20 cents a pound...Continue Reading Historic Building

Slippery Elm Trail Resurfacing Project
The Wood County Park District has officially begun the Slippery Elm Trail Resurfacing Project. The trail will remain open throughout construction; however, sections undergoing work will be closed for at least 24 hours at a time. Trail users are encouraged to use extra caution, particularly at milled intersections and other active work zones.
Gerken Paving, the project contractor, began removing center bollards at trail intersections on June 3. A proof roll of the trail is also scheduled to identify any soft spots requiring pavement repairs. Additional work this month includes milling butt joints at intersections and trail transitions, installation of the required ODOT/LPA project bulletin board near Rudolph Bike Park, and preparation for paving operations.
Paving is tentatively scheduled to begin June 22 and is expected to take approximately 12–13 days to complete. The Wood County Park District will provide updates as the project progresses and asks trail users to observe all posted closure and construction signage.

Lake Erie Stops Here Campaign
Did you know that the ditches and streams in and around Bowling Green drain to Lake Erie?
Lake Erie Starts Here Northwest Ohio is a campaign to increase awareness about choices we make and the impact they have on our streams and lakes. Water friendly practices such as using phosphorus-free fertilizer, landscaping with native plants, managing yard and pet wastes, and volunteering to clean up our waterways help make clear clean water available to us. By educating individuals on these important actions and providing citizens with water-focused volunteer opportunities, we empower everyone to do their part for water quality and conservation.
Lake Erie Starts Here Northwest Ohio is a cooperative effort between TMACOG’s Stormwater Coalition members and many local partners. The City of Bowling Green (along with other communities such as Toledo, Maumee, Waterville, Perrysburg, Whitehouse, Holland, Oregon, Sylvania, and more) is a member of the TMACOG Stormwater Coalition. Since 2003 the Stormwater Coalition has been working to educate the citizens of northwest Ohio, showing how individuals can help to protect and improve water quality in our rivers and Lake Erie.

| | Bowling Green Part of Wood County’s New Emergency Alert System | | |
Those who live, work or regularly visit the City of Bowling Green can receive emergency notifications with the new Wood County Alert system, powered by Everbridge. Similar to CodeRED, the City and County will use this system to communicate with the public during critical events, including severe weather, fires, electrical outages and other safety alerts, to more routine announcements. Users can choose how they prefer to be contacted, including by text message, phone call, email or a mobile app.
The new system replaces the previous emergency notification platform, CodeRED. It is important to note that prior registrations for CodeRed will not transfer, and all users will need to create a new account to receive alerts.
