NATIONAL POLICE WEEK 2021
Honoring and Remembering our Fallen Law Enforcement Officers
Again this year, communities across the United States will honor and remember those law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice, as well as the family members, friends and fellow officers they left behind.
This year, the names of 394 officers killed in the line of duty are being added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC. These 394 officers include 295 (182 fatalities are COVID-19-related) who were killed during 2020, plus 99 officers who died in previous years but whose stories of sacrifice had been lost to history until now.

MAYOR ASPACHER TO DECLARE BOWLING GREEN A PURPLE HEART CITY
On May 26, 2021 at 6:00 pm at the Veterans Memorial in City Park, Mayor Aspacher will issue a proclamation declaring Bowling Green as a Purple Heart City. This declaration recognizes the extraordinary sacrifice those who have received the Purple Heart have made for our country. Feel free to bring a chair and join the Mayor in recognizing these deserving veterans during this short ceremony! The proclamation will be read inside the Veterans Building if it is raining.
The Purple Heart originates from the American Revolution, first being awarded to veterans who served more than three years “with bravery, fidelity and good conduct” by General George Washington as a badge of merit. Since that time, the Purple Heart has been awarded to servicemen and women for wounds received while in action against enemy combatants. It is estimated that 1.7 million veterans have been awarded the Purple Heart since World War I.
The public is welcome to attend.

The window to register your address for a May Brush Collection has closed. The next opportunity to register will be in September.
For those who registered, the collection will begin on May 17. Brush will only be collected from registered addresses. For addresses on the list, please follow the guidelines posted HERE
If you missed the registration window, and are unable to wait until the September collection, the Wood County Landfill accepts brush, for a small fee, at their Yard Waste Recycling area. The brush is NOT added to the landfill itself, it is added to the pile that will be turned into mulch next year.

The City of Bowling Green tax filing due date has been extended to May 17, 2021 for 2020 tax returns. Withholding payment and reporting is not affected by this change and is still due in the time frames stated in the Ohio Revised Code and Bowling Green City Ordinances.
The Bowling Green Income Tax Division requires a copy of your Federal tax return (Form 1040) and all W-2s. If you are claiming Bowling Green withholding or a credit for taxes paid to another municipality, your W-2 needs to report this withholding.
Income tax filings may be turned in using the drop box located outside the building or mailed in. Staff will frequently check the drop box throughout the business day (Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm).
Those who are planning to file income tax returns in person are strongly encouraged to do so well in advance of the deadline in order to avoid long lines.

To help prevent injuries and save lives, the Bowling Green Bike Safety Commission is joining the Ohio Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (Ohio AAP) in a statewide effort to remind children to “Put a Lid on It! Protect Before You Pedal”. Bicycle helmets will be going to children across Ohio this summer thanks to a continued partnership between the Ohio Department of Transportation and the Ohio AAP.
Bowling Green was one of several local communities to receive youth bike helmets for distribution. Helmets will be distributed on a first come, first served basis. Those in need of a youth helmet may pick one up at the Bowling Green Community Center during regular operating hours. Sizes and quantities are limited.

Bicyclists: You Are Traffic!
By: Steve Langendorfer
Did you know that when you ride a bicycle, scooter, golf cart, or even wheelchair on a designated street, you automatically become a “vehicle” just like an automobile, truck, or motorcycle? That means that according to the Ohio Revised Code, you have all the same rights and responsibilities of an automobile driver! We often call the responsibilities of driving “the Rules of the Road.” Do you know what those “Rules” are when applied to bicycles?.... MORE
