September Newsletter

At some point during their week, nearly every camper at BCC learned how to be "the spotter." At the high ropes course, rock wall, and occasionally on a low ropes element, there is a need to add an extra level of support for any participant climbing up in the air. When teaching about proper spotting techniques, the staff member will share that spotters aren't there to catch, they are there to support and guide the climber so that they can either get to the ground or back onto the ladder or rock wall safely.

99% of the time a spotter's main job is to cheer and encourage. It's that 1% of the time, when something out of the ordinary happens, that everyone is glad the spotter is taking their support role seriously. High ropes and the rock wall continue to be some of the safest areas at camp because of the intentional effort to put support systems into place.

As we reflect back on this summer, it's impossible to imagine camp without our layers of intentional support - volunteers, parents, congregations, alumni, and community members. Each of you reading this email in your unique way were spotters for the work that was being done here at camp. We felt the enthusiastic encouragement and we appreciated everyone that stepped in to lend a hand - particularly those that were part of laying the groundwork in the months leading up to Summer 2023. Thank You!

Serve BCC with Your Skills, Gifts, Time, and Talents!

Anyone with a passion for BCC can contribute to this community and we're taking this time to ask, listen, and connect. If you have a gift to share not listed below, we want to hear from you too! Please take some time to read further about some of our specific needs, fill out the short interest form and help us connect with you so we can explore ways your talents can build BCC for the campers and families coming next summer and beyond!

Summer Volunteer Healthcare Professional

Nurses, doctors, and EMTs can fulfill this role and will have the opportunity to work alongside our summer healthcare coordinator to tend to camper and staff health needs throughout a week of camp. Tasks may include administering basic first aid, distributing medication, and working with families to best care for campers while they're here at camp.

Those volunteering to serve in this capacity can bring a camper to camp at no cost. There are some medical systems, including CHOP, that may pay for their staff to volunteer at camp. Even if you don't think this is a good fit for you this upcoming summer, we'd love to have your name on our list of potential invites!

Bear Creek Ambassadors

The number one way that new campers and families learn about BCC is through word-of-mouth marketing. BCAs typically serve in the role for their congregation or their community. They are equipped and empowered to grow our community through the sharing of stories and connecting interested families with information and resources throughout the year.

Board & Committees

The BCC Board of Directors is made up of members of our community working together to drive forward our mission and long-term vision. Throughout the year, committees and task forces are convened to work on more specific areas of camp operations. If you'd be interested in serving in this way, an additional question on the interest form asks you to help define what you're passionate about - some examples include diversity & inclusion, finance, program, and development.
