CARE PARTNERS
Benjamin Rose Institute on Aging held its annual Caregiving Conference earlier this month. This year’s theme was
Supporting Families Impacted by Dementia
. We had a full house in the conference center: caregivers, service providers, researchers and health care professionals coming together to discuss the importance of informal caregivers, the challenges many of them face in meeting the needs of their loved ones, and strategies on how to better support them.
Our keynote speakers for the conference were The Very Reverend Tracey Lind and Emily Ingalls, her care partner. They shared the story of Tracey’s dementia diagnosis and the paths their lives have taken as they learned to live with the disease. Tracey and Emily’s story is one of hope and empowerment, as they share their lives’ journey to raise awareness of living with dementia. During Emily’s remarks she made a comment about her role as a care partner in the relationship. “I am not her caregiver; we are each other’s care partner.” Emily reminded us that the relationship of care partners involves both the giver and the recipient of care.

MEALS ON WHEELS
SHARE THE LOVE
Benjamin Rose Institute on Aging, through our subsidiary Rose Centers for Aging Well, is once again participating in
the Subaru Share the Love Event
as part of the Meals on Wheels network
. Over the past 11 years, Subaru and its retailers have helped Meals on Wheels deliver more than 2.2 million meals nationwide to older adults in need.
One in four older adults lives alone in isolation
and
one in seven might not know from where their next meal is coming.
The vital nutrition, wellness checks and social interaction that come with home-delivered meals can help older adults stay in their own homes, where they want to be.
We are grateful to Subaru and its retailers for supporting the Meals on Wheel network, including the Rose Centers home-delivered meal program.
From now until January 2, 2020, for every new Subaru vehicle purchased or leased, Subaru will donate $250 to the customer’s choice of participating charities
.* Meals on Wheels is one of four national participating charities and has been since the inception of the event. Through this event, as a member of Meals on Wheels America, the Rose Centers will receive a share of the donation from Subaru vehicles sold at participating retailers.
*Disclaimer: Subaru will donate $250 for every new Subaru vehicle sold or leased from November 14, 2019, through January 2, 2020, to four national charities designated by the purchaser or lessee. Pre-approved Hometown Charities may be selected for donation depending on retailer participation. For every new Subaru vehicle sold or leased during the campaign period, participating retailers will donate a minimum of $50 in total to their registered Hometown Charities. Purchasers/lessees must make their charity designations by January 15, 2020. The four national charities will receive a guaranteed minimum donation of $250,000 each. See your local Subaru retailer for details or visit subaru.com/share. All donations made by Subaru of America, Inc.

Attendees gained valuable information about supporting individuals living with dementia and their family caregivers, including destigmatizing dementia, and how creating dementia-inclusive communities can foster this destigmatization; how physicians can help individuals living with dementia age in place; and available evidence-based programs for dementia caregiving.
An interactive activity capped the day, providing attendees with an inter-professional simulation training opportunity, developed through the Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP).
Look for more exciting programs from the GWEP in 2020!
