PEACE AND JUSTICE ACTION
Sunday, August 19, Post-Worship, Lounge
Binkley’s Peace & Justice Action group invites you to be a part of our conversation about future goals and priorities. Mission Statement Peace & Justice Action of Binkley Baptist Church endeavors to engage the congregation in responding to the prophetic call of Christ by pursuing peace and working for justice. We sponsor opportunities for congregation-wide focus on local and global social issues while we support the justice work of individuals and groups within Binkley. We offer both short-term actions and long-term initiatives for living into this prophetic calling in the following ways:

  • cooperate in actions with existing justice groups in our own congregation, the wider community, and the world;
  • organize events that include opportunities for learning and action;
  • respond to urgent peace and justice issues in our community and world;
  • pray for peace and justice workers and for all creation suffering from violence and injustice.

Participation in Peace & Justice Action is open to all Binkley members and friends. So join us in the Lounge following worship on Sunday, August 19. Refreshments will be provided. Please RSVP to velmamaferrell@gmail.com or 919-357-8445 if you plan to attend.
Looking GREAT at 60 Campaign Update:
Our bucket doesn’t yet overfloweth, but it soon will with your help. Thanks to the generosity of many Binkleyites, we have raised in gifts and pledges a total of $28,725 toward our goal of $35,600. This means that in just one month (a summer month, at that!) we have reached  80.6% of our goal! Thank you to everyone who has adopted a project or given to the Bucket. We are so close now! You still have a chance to give and Don Willhoit and Priscilla Bratcher will be holding the bucket after worship on Sunday. Stop by and see us with your questions and contributions. Put a check in the offering plate (be sure to write LG60 on the “memo” line), see Priscilla or Don Sunday or stop by and see Duane Gilbert, Business Manger during the week. We can also be reached at  pbratcher@nc.rr.com , willhoit@belsouth.net and  business@binkleychurch.org . Please join in so that our drops in the budget will add up to a polished building in time for our big celebration!
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Community Kitchen Chef Needed
On the 4th Wednesday of every month, Binkley supports the local community by preparing a lunch and dinner meal for approximately 50-75 hungry citizens at the Inter Faith Council (IFC) community kitchen located at the intersection of Rosemary and Columbia Streets in downtown Chapel Hill. We are in need of a new Binkley 4th Wednesday Dinner coordinator. The dinner crew works from approximately 4:30 - 7:00 pm but uses two shifts (prep and serving). The coordinator makes sure the team is available to serve through email correspondence and should be available by the beginning of the 4:30 pm shift but is not required to stay through the meal serving time. The coordinator should be hospitable, organized and eager to feed children of God who are hungry. Is that person you? If so, please contact Dale Osborne for more information and a shout of HOORAY!

ESL Teachers Needed,
September-May
Do you have 2 Sundays per month that you could offer to the meaningful experience of teaching Sunday School class to learners of English as a second or foreign language? You don't have to have experience -- but hospitality, a willingness to explain new words, and an interest in talking about the Bible, Christianity, and culture to "newcomers" are needed.  Please get in touch with Stephanie Ford,  stephanie@binkleychurch.org , if you are interested or have questions.

Dear members of Binkley,
All of us in the Keever clan want to thank you so deeply for the gift to the Southern Poverty Law Center in honor of our dear father,Dad was amazing, wasn't he? He gave us all such a generous love--one that never forgot the origin of all human love. With his enduring faith and endless curiosity about the world, he gave us so much to hold on to--but most of allhe showed us what true community looks like.
Your lasting friendship means so much to us all.Thank you again.
Warmly, Laura Bumberry
Our Wider Community
Click the links below for more information on each event.
Many of the 3,500 children in our community who rely on the school lunch program may not have access to regular meals during the 11 weeks that school is not in session.

Volunteering is as easy as picking up a box of lunches at a school cafeteria, distributing them at a local community center or housing community and returning a tally sheet to the cafeteria.  Shifts last from 11:25 – 1:15, so you can volunteer at lunch. And you can choose how often you wish to participate.

Please visit our Volunteer Signup page or contact Carolyn Brandt

Opportunities for Kids and Youth (OKAY)  a partner of IFC, supports programs that serve low-resource families in our community so children can have some activity during the summer. Church members and friends are encouraged to volunteer and/or donate supplies. Suggested programs: RENA Community Center (919-918-2822), June 25 to August 3; El Centro Hispano ( aalanis@elcentronc.org ), July 23 to July 27; Food for the Summer at IFC takes lunch & activities to housing complexes all summer (919-960-1163,  foodforthesummer.org ). The OKAY Coordinator is our own Connie Gates,  conniegates@juno.com
