Sunday School Offerings for Adults
This Winter/Spring, the Adult Formation Team is trying something new. In addition to ongoing full-length classes, Mindful Parenting and Easy English Bible Study , the first of two mini-terms will be offered: beginning with an Epiphany Term (as noted below).

EPIPHANY TERM:
January 19 – February 25, 2020

Introduction to Process Theology (with Herman Greene, in the Sunroom): Process theology is a genre of Christian theology. Herman Greene will give a six-part introduction to process theology through the familiar prayer: (1) God is great; (2) God is good; (3) Let us thank God for our food; (4) By God’s hand we all are fed; (5) Give us Lord our daily bread; (6) Amen. This class is best taken as a series, but folks may join the class for any of the sessions.

T. S. Eliot’s Four Quartets: a deep listening (with Meredith Bratcher & Tom Fewel, in the Chapel): Two poetry lovers, Meredith and Tom, will convene a series of 6 gatherings to discuss T. S. Eliot’s Four Quartets.  These four poems were published between 1936 and 1942; most were written during World War II. Interlinked, they form a rich meditation on human experiences in and out of time, on natural forces, on God. The conveners hope in this deep listening to let the poems’ meaning find the participants, rather than to pin the poems down in a scholarly way. They aim with Eliot to make a pilgrimage to internal sacred spaces, the poems lighting a way.

AND

OUR PERENNIAL FAVORITES:
January 22 – May 17, 2020

Easy English Bible Study (with Bo Lloyd, in Room 18): This class is presented in simple English for any person whose native language is not English. We focus on basic Christian concepts, Bible stories, the life and teachings of Jesus, and specific beliefs appreciated at Binkley.

Mindful Parenting (with Megan & Miles Highsmith, in the Lounge): Each week, the group discusses ideas about parenting from current resources. Novice and experienced parents, grandparents, and more alike share laughter, prayer, and support, in the journey of caring for a child/teen.
Worship with Children
Worship with Children is back in full swing, every week during 11:00 am Worship. This is a time designed for children, ages 4-5th grade, to engage the theme of worship in creative ways. Children are invited to follow a teacher each week to a classroom area, usually just before the sermon begins. This Sunday, Nancy Cheek will lead children to the Sunroom for a lesson and activity related to the story and vision of Martin Luther King, Jr.

From Outreach:
Helping our Durham Neighbors
The News and Observer (Sunday, January 12, 2020) calls our attention to the plight of families who had to evacuate their homes in McDougald Terrace in Durham, due to high levels of carbon monoxide and years of neglect of the residents’ homes (mold, roach infestation and more). The Durham Housing Authority has arranged temporary housing while homes are being inspected and repaired. Donations are being coordinated by the Salvation Army, The Good Neighbor Fund and the Durham One Fund (United Way). Needed items include: “nonperishable food, paper plates, plastic utensils, hygiene products, baby food, baby formula, plastic storage containers” (N&O, 1/12/2020). Please bring your items to the Narthex by January 20. A member of the Outreach Committee will take them to one of the designated locations.

Then, at 2 pm there will be a concert to premiere new vocal works by Dr. Sue Klausmeyer, including a piece commissioned for Meredith and pieces that Dr. Klausmeyer wrote for our own Binkley Chancel Choir during her interim last winter. Meredith College is an historically Baptist college, and we have many connections here at Binkley. Please join us in welcoming these singers, and enjoy their beautiful music, on January 26.
Last Call for El Refugio Donations
If you have any further donations of clothing or gift cards, please bring into the main office by January 26. A list of needs is available here .
Living the Questions:
Facilitated by Dr. Marcus McFaul
Beginning Feb. 6, 7 pm, Lounge (21 sessions)
Explore a kind of Christianity that makes sense today. Living the Questions is an open-minded alternative to studies that attempt to give participants all the answers and instead strives to create an environment where participants can interact with one another in exploring what’s next for Christianity. Register for the class by contacting [email protected] by February 1.
Report from the Humanitarian Crisis Work Group
We had a wonderful turnout at Binkley on Jan. 12! Ninety-eight people, representing 23 organizations, attended our event to begin to create a strong, united, visible voice in our community --- speaking up on behalf of the marginalized people in our country and at our borders. We are hopeful that many of these organizations will join us by signing on with their organization’s name when we publish our statement again in area newspapers. Hopefully, we can create numerous ways to work together to promote love, compassion, and respect.
On Feb. 16,  the   Humanitarian Crisis Workgroup will meet following the 11:00 worship service in the Fellowship Hall. Bring a bag lunch. All are welcome! Susan Ketchin and Bob Winstead will debut and teach us the beautiful song that Susan has written for the cause. We will also make plans for the important next steps needed to respond to the crisis.
Greeters Needed
The Binkley greeters are a small group of dedicated people making guests and members feel wanted, needed, and special for a few minutes prior to Sunday morning services. We are in need of expanding our crew and have openings on the second, third, fourth, and fifth Sunday teams. Please contact Stewart Bankhead ( [email protected] ) if you'd like to take on 1 Sunday a month, or less, as a greeter, or as a sub. I know you'll be blessed. Our members and guests have made the greeters feel special too. Thank you for considering this important calling. I know it makes our church a more welcoming place.
Binkley Art Show to Return
Here’s your chance to shine! Our Family and Friends Art Show will return in Fall 2020. The one-day, after-worship event will be seeking submissions, including original paintings, drawings, needlework, woodwork, glass, pottery, textiles, and possibly other media. Children’s pieces are welcomed. Both for-sale and not-for-sale items may be displayed. So get your pieces ready, and watch this space for further details as the Fall approaches. If you have questions, contact Myra Knight, chair of the Fine Arts Committee.
