Welcome back to the weekly newsletter! I hope you all are enjoying February's bonus day. We started this week with some really nasty weather on Monday, lots of wind and snow. The rest of the week has been all over the place and it looks like we have a good chance for more snow this weekend. I'm glad I seized the opportunity to go fish last weekend as this upcoming one looks to be an opportune time to finish some projects at home.

This past weekend Jordan, Wyatt and I hit the road and headed over to the Beaverhead. Jordan had never fished it and Wyatt and I hadn't fished it since last April. It was a little breezy but the warm air temps and intermittent sunshine made for a great Saturday. The river had a little green tinge from what we guessed was low level snow melt but wasn't dirty. We caught a majority of our fish on midge pupa, but a few ate worms, scuds and baetis nymphs. We had hopes of finding some rising fish but the wind was just steady enough to keep the bugs off the water. Plenty of fun was had and all of us were grateful for an opportunity to get out of the house.

All of us really look forward to this time of year as we usually get a few days where our schedules line up and we can all fish together. Most of the summer we get to catch up before or after fishing but it's rare to get to spend a day together during peak season. So late winter and on into spring we get out whenever possible. Sometimes we hit conditions perfectly and other times we get hit with wild weather, either way we have a lot of fun and even luck into some fish occasionally. We're already chomping at the bit to get out again and once the opportunity arises we'll be back at it.

As always give us a call at the shop, swing in or shoot us an email if you have any questions!

Fishing Report

The fishing had remained fairly steady until this winter storm set upon us. It may be a little dicey moving around the river with all this new snow plus the wind. Once we settle back into a bit nicer weather look for the fish to be on their usual program. When you do hit the water we would still recommend starting with a #18 Zebra Midge in red or black trailed behind a #10 Rubberlegs. Even though it's looking to be cooler for a bit we would still carry some Griffiths Gnats in size 18, just in case.

Flies of the Week

Iris Caddis

The Iris Caddis is our favorite caddis emerger, hands down. We fish it dry, but it rides low in the film much like a stillborn caddis would, and fish take it without hesitation more often than not. From the Madison and Gallatin to the Firehole and Henry's Fork, if we could only take one caddis dry with us, this would be it.

If you are interested in tying the Iris Caddis, click here to check out our How To video.

Devil Jig

The Devil Jig has been a productive pattern for us, particularly when fish are keyed in on smaller stonefly nymphs. The tungsten bead will get the fly down while the jig design will keep the hook point riding up, minimizing snags.

Sale Fly of the Week

Madison River Closer

On Sale for $1.99! Original price $3.99. Large wasps and hornets are an overlooked pattern, but just like bee's, trout love them. Give this fly a go on the Madison in the late summer and early fall.

Materials of the Week

Zelon Dubbing

A blend of various shades of zelon, natural and dyed rabbit. This has become our go-to dubbing for many of our favorite flies. It's perfect for any pattern that you want a shaggy, buggy appearance. Also available in a six color dispenser.

Crinkled Zelon

For over 30 years you've read about our Zelon. You have tied with it and fished many effective fly patterns using it as shucks, wings and bodies. You know what a great difference it makes in your angling success. We use it more than any other material when developing new, effective patterns. A must for sparkle duns, X and Iris Caddis, Zelon Midges and many other Yellowstone favorites!

Tiemco 102y Hook

A beautiful hook for dry caddis or shorter mayfly patterns. Also makes a great looking soft hackle. We use this hook for our Iris Caddis as well as our Peacock and Starling Soft Hackle. 1x fine, wide gap, black finish. Available in 25 or 100 packs.

Whiting Hen Necks and Saddles

We currently have a great selection of Whiting/Hebert Miner Hen Necks and Saddles. Lots of great colors to choose from for all of your soft hackle needs.

Products of the Week

BRF Waterproof Fly Box S/M

This 5 inch by 3.5 inch double sided completely waterproof box is perfect for all flies size 10 and smaller. Holds up to 200 flies.

Trouthunter Fluorocarbon Tippet

This is the best fluorocarbon tippet in the fly fishing world today. It's strength is unparalleled, it knots easily, it is extremely abrasion resistant and the handy 50 meter spools will keep anglers fishing longer.

Grunden's Boundary Wading Boot

The new Boundary wading boot is designed to function as a system with our new Boundary Stockingfoot Wader. Offering tried and tested fit together with a premium waterproof leather construction, the Boundary wading boots are built to provide the most comfortable wading experience on the market. Compatible with the Grundéns HEXAGRIP™ cleat and stud system for the ultimate traction package.

Dr. Slick 5" Release Clamp

Easy, hands-free release of fish finally done right! Simply slide the tube down your tippet until the fly is inside the tube. A quick pop or jiggle and the fly is free from the fish. A huge advantage of this set-up is when a fly is twisted or obstructed from the tube, you can simply use the clamp in the traditional way to remove the hook. Can easily handle all streamside tasks. 5" Clamp with 5mm ID tube (best for hook size #16-#22).

Not a bad way to spend a day.
